Comparing 'Of Mice And Men And To A Mouse'

The authors John Steinbeck and Robert Burns approach their ideas in very different ways, while having the same themes the reader comprehends key concepts in a different light. Throughout the short story “Of Mice and Men” and the poem “To a Mouse” the theme of hope is a key concept, even though while in both stories their hope did not bring them their happiness, friendship brought them together. Correspondingly while having similar themes of friendship, loneliness, and hope, this all takes place in different settings with different characters. While reading the stories “Of Mice and Men” and the poem “To a Mouse” the audience can infer that both stories have to do with hope for a better future. “Of Mice and Men” takes place during the Great Depression, Crook displays how the African American community was treated at this time point, given how he was separate from the others and treated down upon. For instance when Lennie went in Crooks room, Crook explained to Lennie why he was separate from the others, “Cause I’m black. They play cards in there, but I can’t play because I’m black.” (Steinbeck Pg. 53) Not to mention how work was hard to achieve for everyone, and in the long run this led for a hard life for most. In contrast “To a Mouse” took place in Scotland, specifically during the winter time, which is linked to how the theme is presented throughout the poem. Considering winter plays an important role in this, both characters share the hardship and struggles anyone has to go through to survive, yet being distinct to each other. In either case the different settings in both of the stories are tied to how the theme and the concept was given throughout the allegories. Obviously one example being Lennie and George, having such a close relationship but not even being related to each other. A critical thing to remember is how throughout the story “Of Mice and Men” George is always looking out for Lennie, knowing the ways of how Lennie always gets into trouble. This being undeterred by Lennie being killed by George, but for very generous reasons, one being Lennie may would have ended up dead or in jail, either way ending in a tragic circumstance. George knowing Lennie he could never survive in jail by himself, George decided to kill Lennie so he would not suffer for selfless reasons. As stated before “To a Mouse” has a theme of friendship, how both being immortal to each other but sharing the same struggles. Taking everything in mind we can see how even in two different friendships between distinct people, they can both approach the same theme in different
