Two characters who are similar, yet different How can two people who are very different share similarities? Dally and Johnny, two greasers from S. E. Hinton’s novel The Outsiders, have distinct differences as well as similarities. They are similar because they both know what it is like to have abusive and neglectful parents. Also, they both care about each other in similar ways. Dally and Johnny are completely different when it comes to the law. Dally is the least law abiding in the gang, where as Johnny is the most. Dally and Johnny are dissimilar when they die. Dally dies a hoodlum, which is vast difference from how Johnny dies a hero. Therefor, Dally and Johnny have a lot in common, but also have great differences. Dally and Johnny are similar in a way of knowing what it is like to have abusive and neglectful parents. There is no love coming from Dally’s home, which is why he does some reckless things. The neglect he faces at home affects his ability to love others. People look up to others because they are so alike each other that they feel connected, or they are so different, they aspire to be like them. Sometimes you can have someone who looks up to the other that is both, different and the same as them. This is the case for Johnny and Dally in The Outsiders, written by S. E. Hinton. Which is better: book or movie? The age-old debate. But which is better? S.E Hinton's, 'The Outsiders' book is far superior to Francis F. Coppola's motion-picture film portrayal of the book in 1983. You might remember it from the popular quote, "Stay Gold". Today it is mostly read in middle school classrooms. The Outsiders was published by S.E Hinton in 1967 when she was a teenager. The main focus throughout the story is the feud between two gangs: The Socials (Socs) and the Greasers. "We're poorer than the Socs and the middle class. I reckon we're wilder too". The whole book is written in Ponyboy Curtis's point of view. So, we are hearing the story through a Greaser's perspective. It is often difficult to make a connection with a character over the big screen. You miss out on scenes that did not make it into the movie, some that were are not emphasized like they should have been, and some characters were portrayed wrongly.
Two people with two completely different characteristics have something alike. Both Dally and Johnny are mentally tough because of their parents. Johnny and Dally’s parents both do not care for them and could care less about them. For example, during Dally’s childhood he went to jail, been in a gang, and has been in many fights and his dad still would not care for him even if he won the lottery. Dally also talks about his dad's disgrace towards him in the car with Johnny and Ponyboy, “‘ Shoot, my dad don’t give a hang whether I’m in jail or dead in a car wreck or drunk in a gutter...’”(88). Dally could easily live without his dad and he does for the most part. Dally just hangs around with his friends and stays at their place. When Johnny and Pony killed Bob, Dally covered for them and had them go hide out in the church until the cops were gone. Also, when Pony and Johnny went into the burning church to save the kids, Dally put out the fire that was on Pony’s back and he attempted to save Johnny. Johnny was heroic because he killed Bob when he was trying to kill him and Pony. Also, he was heroic because he went into the burning church to save the kids. Without Johnny doing that, the kids would’ve been burned to death or gotten seriously hurt. Compared to regulated time of living, Pony and Johnny barely started to settle to life in at the church, when it was set ablaze. “It seemed to me that I had always lived in the church”. (Page 68) Ponyboy and Johnny had adjust to life at the old church, and it wasn’t too bad, it was alright for them. Around the time they started settling in, a terrible incident happened. The church was burned. But in the process, Johnny and Dally got hurt badly. “Dally suddenly slammed on the brakes and stared. ‘Oh, glory!’ he whispered. The church was on fire!” ... “I started at a dead run for the church, and the man caught my arm. ‘I’ll get them. You kids stay out!!” … “Then I heard Johnny scream, and as I turned to go back for him, Dally swore at me and clubbed me across the back as he could, and I went down into peaceful darkness.” (page number ?) Their life at the church, and the church was set ablaze, as well as Ponyboy and his friends getting hurt. Just as Ponyboy and Johnny adjust to life after being called criminals, all goes down when the church burns and Johnny and Dally get hurt. Dally was a big part of the gang, who helped out, and was part of the family.
Johnny and Dally share compelling similarities. For example, they both have inattentive and vituperative parents. Dally used to live in New York and often got into gang fights. This shows that his parents don’t keep a well watch out for him. He also has a diverse criminal record. Ponyboy states: “he had been arrested, he got drunk, he rode in rodeos, lied, cheated, stole, rolled drunks, jumped small kids - he did everything” (11). If Dally’s parents paid more attention to him, he wouldn’t be capable of getting into so much trouble. Ponyboy also claims that Dally “lived wherever he could” (105). This is because he doesn’t want to live with his parents who abuse him. Dally’s parents clearly aren’t the affectionate parents that other kids have. Similarly, Johnny’s parents are brutal and lackadaisical. Johnny asserts “‘I walk in that house, and nobody says anything. I walk out, and nobody says anything. I stay away all night, and nobody notices’” (51). This confirms that Johnny’s parents pay no attention to him. Johnny hates his parents because of this. Two-Bit says to Johnny’s mother “‘no wonder he hates your guts’” (123). Obviously Johnny has said awful things about his parents because they are abusive. Ponyboy also says about Johnny that “his father was always beating him up, and his mother ignored him” (12). Dally and Johnny both live in toxic home environments. Dally and Johnny are similar in two key ways. For instance, neither Dally nor Johnny value their own lives at one point or another during the story. Dallas always goes out and does whatever he wants. Even if there is a chance of the Socs ganging up on him, or cops arresting him, he does not care what consequence acting out brings. After Johnny dies, Dallas cannot think of any way to survive without him, and therefore reasons that he does not want to live under these circumstances. Obviously, he “wanted to be dead and he always got what he wanted” (154). In fact, leading up to Johnny’s death Dallas does not seem to care either way about how his actions would affect the world. Even at the age of ten, Dallas does not give thought to being arrested. Likewise, Johnny states that he does not care for his life before, and after killing the Soc and creating trouble. He said to Ponyboy in the parking lot that he might just kill himself. This is caused due to the stress by his parents arguing all the time. Killing himself, is the only path out of his stressful life that he could see. Furthermore, while in the hospital Johnny states to Ponyboy that the lives of those children were “worth more than [his]” (178). Dally Winston and Bob Sheldon come from dissimilar circumstances, and this may help explain why they have such diverse personalities. Living in poverty his entire life has made Dally a mean and angry young man. Conversely, living in the lap of luxury, Bob has no reason to be angry at the world. Johnny and Dally are both very contrasting characters in the book; however they do have their similarities. Also, they both look up to each other. In the novel, Johnny is the character that reflects sensitivity and weakness. Johnny is constantly beaten by his father and is ignored by his mother. He has lost many things in life that others may take for granted. A quote from the novel describes Johnny as a “dark puppy that has been kicked too many times and is lost in a crowd of strangers” on page fourteen. Johnny’s soft and delicate personality is evident in that statement, especially when he is referred to a “puppy”. The image of a puppy implies vulnerability, a reflection on Johnny’s personality. Whereas Johnny is the vulnerable spot in the Greasers, Dally is on the other hand, the exact opposite. Dally is cold-hearted and hard, and plays the character of the devil in the novel. A quote from the book describes Dally’s eyes as “blue, blazing ice, cold with the hatred of the whole world” on page fourteen. This quote describes Dally as a cold character, and refers to the fact that Dally has seen many more hardships in his life than happiness. You can see that Johnny and Dally are both very different.
