Everyone experienced feeling shy and nervous at some point in their lives. Being shy doesn’t mean that a person lacks talent, because it just might be that they don’t feel comfortable in certain situations. Ever since I was in middle school, people always told me that I’m quiet and shy. Having said that, I never felt comfortable communicating with people I didn't know that well. That also includes speaking or presenting in front of a class. According to my family and friends, I’m the complete opposite, because they claim that I’m talkative. Being shy and nervous did affect my schoolwork. I wouldn’t raise my hand in class that often, because I didn’t feel comfortable enough. When I was in 6th grade, my teacher would always call up students to share something they liked about a story they read. When the teacher called out my name, my heart started pounding, my hands were shaking and my mind went completely blank. I was so nervous to the point where I felt like I was going to pass out any moment. That’s when I asked the teacher if I could excuse myself to go to the bathroom. She didn’t mind that request so I tried to calm myself down by washing my face and breathing. After class, my teacher and I discussed my inability to present in front of a class. She was obliging, because she agreed to help me overcome being shy and to help boost my self-confidence. Shyness and nervousness also stopped me from participating in activities and obtaining opportunities. In 10th grade, my Chemistry teacher suggested a film festival, because she was aware that I loved filmmaking. At first, I considered the idea, because I’ve never done anything like it before. Having thought about it, I then realized that I was going to have my movie up on a full screen where …show more content…
Achieving my goals constructs the feeling of satisfactory and confidence me within myself, which is my number one
Almost everyone alive has a fear of something whether it be heights, spiders or even clowns. Some people however have more serious issues with their fears, fears that follow them almost everywhere they go, these fears are called phobias. It is estimated that 4 to 5 percent of Americans have some type of phobia, which is an irrational fear of situations and certain objects. There are over 500 known phobias; a very common phobia is social phobia.
The very idea of spending time with people outside of school is exhausting and my heart begins to pound as I raise my hand to speak during class. Speaking in public, even if it’s just to answer a question in class, or carrying out tasks like ordering Chinese food can lead to tears or a sudden lack of ability to breathe. If I think I say something in a weird way or join a conversation I feel I should not have joined, I will remember the terror (because it is pure terror) that I felt in that moment basically
One of the biggest fears I have had to overcome in high school is my fear of public speaking. I was always comfortable in the classroom; I loved discussing current events and explaining different biology and history to my friends, but I could not stand in front of them to give a presentation. Whenever I stood in front of my classmate speak, I would begin to shake so much that I could not read any notes I may have brought up with me. I was an absolute wreck and I hated that I could not overcome my phobia; however, my fear of public speaking is incredibly ironic because my sister teaches public speaking on a collegiate level. When I told my sister that I was horrified of standing up and speaking in front of my classmates, she was surprised. My sister told me that I could not let my fear stop me from speaking because I would likely never get over it. In addition, she
The start of a new school year as a freshmen in high school away from my hometown. Everyone is anxious for this new and fresh start meeting new people and friends. I’m on my way to school very nervous and worried that they might laugh at me. As soon as I enter the class late, everyone stops and stares at me; I walk down the aisle to the nearest empty seat. I sat down quietly throughout my classes in fear that they might notice I’m a, “funny talker,” or that they laugh at me. Everyone avoided talking to me, seat next to me, or even do projects with me. I don’t have a contagious disease; I’m like every other ordinary girl in school. I work hard for my grades, I join organizations, I have no disability, I have control of my body, but I can’t control my stuttering. I’ve had this speech disorder since I was younger. I always had trouble making friends because I stress out and get anxiety trying
I did have great communication skills but whenever I had to communicate in front of a group of people for some reasons I fail miserably. My public speaking fears had become worst when I got to college. I was required to take a public speaking class which I couldn’t escape in since it was one of the required courses for my degree. My first day on that class is so far the most terrible day of my life. I was asked to introduce myself to the class using only one word to describe me, the moment that my name was called it felt like I was walking into an unfamiliar galaxy. I am standing in front of a classroom full of strangers doing nothing but looking around and
I used to be very shy, and not talk to a lot of people. It was a big part of my personality, and I would only talk to someone when spoken to. Wong explains how I acted very well, “My friends and family probably wouldn 't describe me as shy. But for me, being shy has always been about struggling to connect with people I don 't know. I fear the unfamiliarity of a stranger—how they might judge or reject me. Maybe there 's nothing inherently wrong with being timid, but when I started noticing how it affected my everyday life, I wanted to get it under control.” (para. 3). I started getting more and more talkative as I grew older, but one day I decided to change. I began to come out of my comfort zone. For example, I made myself talk more to people even though I was afraid of what I would say, but I made myself do it anyways. This helped me communicate a lot with people, because they began to respect me more, because I would also watch what I would say to them. I still watch what I say most of the time to people because one of my biggest fears is to offend someone on accident because of something that I said. Making myself talk to people more made me a much more outgoing person, which is a big part of who I
Some people are more self-confident, others are less self-confident. Nevertheless, everybody has an idea of what you talk about when referring to self-confidence. According to a popular definition, self-confidence is “one’s belief that he or she can successfully execute a desired behavior” (Feltz, 2007). Especially in sports, self-confidence is a very crucial trait. While it is believed that there are a few negative impacts that come with being self-confident, the positive impact of self-confidence, like the ability to effectively overcome errors, definitely outweighs them (Woodman; Akehurst; Hardy; Beattie, 2010). Research and literature on this subject shows, that there is also such a thing as an optimal confidence level. The most important
...objectives. I have finally come to know what my goals are and the way in which my career will be sculpted. It is more of self-evaluation and self organization than for others.
The term social phobia is described by the presence of anxiety or tendency to experience excessive fear while social interaction is present. Social avoidance is also described as a combination of syndromes performing in a person perceived as embarrassment. The anxiety in the individuals experiencing this type of phobia is cause by the tendency of exaggeration in self-evaluations , having a negative perception of themselves based of their own negative judge. The tendency of being self-critical is lead by fear during social interaction or even during intrapersonal situations. The anticipation of anxiety and fear is often part of a vicious cycle in which persons experience a physical symptom such as blushing, palpitations , sweating, avoiding eye contact and trembling (Heimberg, 1995). However, some persons with social phobia report no physical symptoms of anxiety only self-consciousness and fear.

Growing up, I was known as an outgoing kid. However, in fifth grade I learned that I had glossophobia or speech anxiety. This anxiety occurred when I was in front of the classroom or large group of people. I had no idea why, but the thought of speaking out loud would give me sweaty palms, a rapid heartbeat, and nausea. I have tried to avoid making eye contacts with my teacher in hoping that she would never call on me. However, one day, Mrs. Nealy, my favorite teacher, asked me to present my family tree project to the classroom. I was very hesitant
Although self-confidence may not seem to be a vital part of a person’s composition, it helps shape the individual’s personality and how each person view themselves, which will be a part of them for their entire life. Self-confidence is said to be a feeling of trust in one’s abilities, qualities, and judgement (Confidence). When you meet someone for the first time, you can typically tell if they have self-confidence. Why do some people seem to have it when others do not? There are many factors that come to play when determining one’s self-confidence starting with where it comes from, to why people have self-confidence, as well as the positives and negative of having self-confidence.
"Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy." - Dale Carnegie
Eventually everyone will see that being afraid of the crowd will be a waste of their time. There are people who crack under pressure and become sick or have mental breakdowns when in front of a crowd. School is a way for kids to learn the basic fundamentals about life and to learn how to be prepared for the unexpected. I know I do not care for speaking in front of crowds or performing because I am always afraid I will mess up or look ridiculous while talking, but it is apart of life. I found that once I showed my true feelings and thoughts to my peers it was less frightening even though I still have in the back of my mind about how no one cares or how ridiculous I look. I soon learned by myself that none of those thoughts even matter. I will always be a unique person and everyone will have thoughts about me or others, but I can not let those thoughts over take my life because they may be hurtful. Overlook the past and learn from the mistakes and learn to move past those who try and let a person down about themselves. No one is worth the time to think about if they try and ruin one’s day or outlook on themselves. Self confidence will succeed to show beauty in
People all over the world have accomplished things that made them who they are today. Overcoming shyness was a huge accomplishment and something that was very significant to me that marked my transition from childhood to adulthood.
