The Last Dog “The Last Dog”, is a great story with an amazing, and true moral about following your instincts. It is written by Katherine Patterson. Although this story is an obvious fantasy, it can be used in real life to make difficult choices. Some choices are hard to make; however, sometimes we just know what the right choice is. Likewise, Brock instantly knew what to do in order to save Brog, his dog. Personally, this story was interesting to me because of the adoring affection Brock showed towards his loyal friend. The story starts when Brock, the main character, decides to go outside of the dome, or the uniform environment separate from the “so called” wasteland in the outside world. He was born in a test tube along with many other pod fellows. Knowledge of the outside world was based on what the virtual books told them. Curiosity hit Brock when he discovered a few fairy tales in the dome library. The wonders inside them led him to wonder what the world was like today. Brog and Brock ended up living together in a world with green trees and delicious water; however, “The Last Dog”, was set in the distant future controlled by a uniform environment. When Brock said “I won’t hurt you”, to the puppy he was excited that he met his long last friend like in the stories he read, Huck Finn and M.C. Higgins. Brock could not let his dog be poked and prodded at until he could not take it anymore. Also, in my opinion, knowing your feelings on a screen can help you cope with what you really need and what is not necessary. I’ve always felt that animals are the purest spirits in the world. They don’t fake or hide their feelings, and they are the most loyal creatures on Earth and somehow we humans think we’re smarter. I chose this topic about the canine because, some of these canines risk their life’s to protect dog’s best friend.
Take a moment and picture a dog in your head. What do you see? You may see many different things depending on your own personal encounters with the species. There are many types of dogs out there. Some small, some large, long-haired or short-haired. There are many variances in what a dog can look like. One thing that does not change, or should not change, is the importance for every dog in this world to be given love and affection, no matter its characteristics. This is what leads me to believe that the obsession with producing and owning purebreds needs to come to a halt. Continuing to create these so-called “best dogs” is dangerous to not only the purebred’s health, but also devalues mixed breeds and can cost them their lives in animal shelters where they may never escape. The story starts in Santa Clara Valley, California where we find Buck, a St. Bernard and Scotch Collie mix. At the moment Buck is owned by a man named Judge Miller; sadly, he’s not owned by him for very long. A gardener’s assistant steals Buck and uses him to pay off a gambling debt. Buck is sent off to Seattle in extremely harsh conditions. He is unfed and taunted the whole time he is in this crate he was shipped in. Once he arrives, he is horribly malnourished and is starving; but furious. He is released and charges at a man, but the man slams him in the side with a club and repeatedly does it as Buck tries and tries again. In this way Buck learns “the law of the club” as he refers to it. Buck is then sold to two French men, Francois and Perrault, and they bring him to the Klondike region of Canada and train him there to be a sled dog. As he is transitioning into this new life, whether he likes it or not, he is being dominated by another sled dog named Spitz. Eventually Buck decides he’s had enough and challenges Spitz to a fight. Spitz proudly and happily takes the offer and in the end, dies in the fight. Buck is next owned by a Scottish half-breed who is working in mail-service delivering items to the mining areas.
