Summary Lockwood is the narrator of the story and the reader follows him during his encounter with Heathcliff and his forced stay at the manor Wuthering Heights. There, he meets the ghost Catherine Linton who foreshadows the coming story. Once home at Thrushcross Grange, Lockwood inquires Nelly, his housekeeper, about Heathcliff and the mysteries surrounding him. Through a series of diary entries, Lockwood dictates what he heard from Nelly who is remembering from her childhood. It began with Mr. Earnshaw who had brought an orphaned boy called Healthcliff to raise with his children Hindley and Catherine. Catherine and Heathcliff become close, but there remains animosity between Hindley and Heathcliff. Their father figure, also, comes to prefer Heathcliff. Under these conditions, Heathcliff is bullied by Hindley, which breeds ill in both as Heathcliff becomes bitter towards Hindley and Hindley is punished by his father. Cathy & Heathcliff come to make friends with the Linton children. After the death of her mother, Cathy looks upon them as polite and etiquette breed, different from her own. When she becomes sick due to a dog-bite, Cathy is nursed back to health by Mrs. Llinton and remains there during the period of her illness. After that period, she comes home transformed into a “lady”. Heathcliff only becomes angry and hurt by her change, feeling left behind. In the meantime, Hindley had been sent off to college and returned home with a wife, but she died soon after the birth of a son. Due to this, he begins to drink heavily. Healthcliff and Cathy drift and eventually Cathy accepts a proposal by one of the Linton children for the main purpose of pursuing gentility and wealth. Her intentions cause Heathcliff to run away only causing Cathy to be ill again. When Heathcliff comes back, he is in possession of wealth and seems to be the educated man Cathy had married Edgar Linton for. Isabella falls in love with Heathcliff and he only plays along because he is obsessed with revenge against Edgar. Eventually, Cathy dies leaving a daughter, Catherine, in her place. Her tragic death causes Heathcliff to cry for her ghost to remain. Isabella has a child, but under constant abuse by her husband, she eventually runs away. Hindley dies the same way Heathcliff once began, uneducated, gruff, and dark. His death leaves the estate in Heathcliff’s possession. Now, Heathcliff’s scheme is to have Linton, his own son, and Catherine, Cathy’s daughter, fall in love in order to acquire Thrushcross Grange.
At a young age, she defies her father and brother “with bold saucy looks,” and “ready words.” Throughout her life, they were the ones who tried to control her to be what they want her to be. She becomes friends with Heathcliff and they go out and do things that they want. Her brother was “entirely negligent how they behaved.” Her brother did not approve that Catherine and Heathcliff spent a lot of time together; so he arranged for Katherine to marry Edgar. Katherine, even when she is married, goes out and pursues her freedom. Heathcliff returns after a few years and wants to see Katherine. Edgar disapproves and wants Heathcliff out. Edgar walked out the room and Katherine “slammed the door and locked it.” Katherine was upset that Edgar talked to Heathcliff in the way that he did and that he wasn’t as happy as she was when Heathcliff showed up. A few chapters’ later, Catherine and Heathcliff ran away together. By doing so, Katherine escaped the wicked demands from a man she did not love and freed herself from the submission of a male with a higher status. After Catherine dies, another female is put in her same position. Isabella, Edgar’s sister, arrives back with Heathcliff and wants to see her brother. He disowns her and her now husband, Heathcliff, is not the man she imagined he was. Heathcliff is more violent and that no dangerous animal can “not rouse terror” in her like Heathcliff. Edgar’s daughter, Catherine, is the third female to witness his demanding behavior. She wants to visit her cousin and he denies her of that. Like her mother, Catherine goes against Edgar by writing letters to her cousin, Linton. Linton falls ill, and begs Catherine to visits him. While she’s there, he states that Catherine harmed him, and that he’s worse because of it. She’s upset and thinks it’s her fault, and Linton uses that to his advantages.
Although, Mr. Earnshaw tried to make Heathcliff an equal part of the family, Heathcliff never truly fits in. Heathcliff is from a completely different social class than the rest of his “family”. This led to the hatred that Hindley felt towards Heathcliff. Hindley robs Heathcliff of his education, forces him to work as a servant at Wuthering Heights and frequently beats him. Throughout this all, Heathcliff never complains.
Although Heathcliff creates a divide within the family due to his arrival, Cathy is seen to gain a friend with whom she feels she has an affinity both physically, spiritually and mentally, which will become increasingly evident as the novel progresses. However, this alliance throughout the novel is frequently thrown into turmoil by outside influences or factors. As we are informed from the onset, the "greatest punishment" that could be bestowed upon Cathy was separation from Heathcliff. & nbsp; Cathy and Heathcliff's separation only therefore ensues as a result of their initial outing to Thrushcross Grange. Their promise to grow up together as 'rude as savages,' is destroyed when Cathy and Heathcliff are separated physically by many factors resulting from this visitation. Just as the Linton's dog 'holds' Cathy, so too is the Linton's house symbolically presented as separating her from Heathcliff, when Heathcliff resorts to peering in through their 'great glass panes' to see Cathy, after being physically 'dragged' out of Thrushcross Grange. & nbsp;
Heathcliff and Cathy have a sadistic relationship. They are only truly in love when they are hurting each other. As Catherine lay dying, she wants Heathcliff, her love, to join her in death. She pleads to him:
From the beginning of the novel and most likely from the beginning of Heathcliff's life, he has suffered pain and rejection. When Mr. Earnshaw brings him to Wuthering Heights, he is viewed as a thing rather than a child. Mrs. Earnshaw was ready to fling it out the doors, while Nelly put it on the landing of the stairs hoping that it would be gone the next day. Without having done anything to deserve rejection, Heathcliff is made to feel like an outsider. Following the death of Mr. Earnshaw, Heathcliff suffers cruel mistreatment at the hands of Hindley. In these tender years, he is deprived of love, friendship, and education, while the treatment from jealous Hindley is barbaric and disrupts his mental balance. He is separated from the family, reduced to the status of a servant, undergoes regular beatings and forcibly separated from his soul mate, Catherine. The personality that Heathcliff develops in his adulthood has been formed in response to these hardships of his childhood.
The complicated nature surrounding Heathcliff’s motives again adds an additional degree of ambiguity to his character. This motivation is primarily driven by Catherine’s marriage to Edgar and past rejection of Heathcliff, since he was a servant whom Hindley disapproved of. Prior to storming out of Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff overhears Catherine say, “It would degrade me to marry Heathcliff now…” (Brontë 87). The obstacles that ultimately prevent Heathcliff from marrying Catherine provide insight into Heathcliff’s desire to bring harm to Edgar and Hindley. The two men play prominent roles in the debacle, Edgar as the new husband and Hindley as the head figure who refused Heathcliff access to Catherine. Following this incident, Catherine says, “Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same…” (Brontë 87). Catherine’s sentiment indicates she truly would rather be with Heathcliff, but the actions of others have influenced her monumental decision to marry Edgar. ...e of joy and pain in Catherine’s life, as their love was so powerful that it can only be embraced by the extent of death. With many other important messages in the novel, the most important is the changes that occur in and between the characters. The numerous characteristic aspects, the characters in the story are enthralling. Although, Cathy Linton may be recognized as a duplicate of Catherine Earnshaw due to the parallelism of generations, their traits and personalities are entirely individual. Cathy is an innocent and fine young lady, and Catherine is a selfish evil monster. Throughout the progress of the story the reader can clearly appreciate the mismatched traist of the mother and daughter. And like, psychologists have said, “Often children avoid the ways their parents have gone”. Although Cathy doesn’t experience her mother ways, she lives the opposite way.
Furthermore, the love that Heathcliff’s young niece and nephew share is one that echoes that of what his and Catherine’s love could have been, which provides even more ground for the fiend to tyrannize the two. The semblence in their relationships can be seen in comparable scenes, the first of which recounts Catherine uttering, “It would degrade me to marry Heathcliff now…” (74) Later, Heathcliff pronounces apropos of Cathy caring for Hareton, “Your love will make him an outcast, and a beggar.” (299) The similarities between their two relationships is therefore outlined in their alluded elements of shame and social degradation that can be found in both occasions , and this likeness further agitates the aching heart of Wuthering Height’s antagonist.
Linton Heathcliff is only interested in himself. He is a sickly and scared young man. Like his mother Isabella Linton who accused Catherine Earnshaw of selfishly wanting Heathcliff for herself – in which she didn't- Linton enjoys inflicting and watching people suffer. As Heathcliff threatened to kill Linton, Linton only thought about his own life and, decided to betray Cathy, tricking her into staying at Wuthering Heights and getting married to him, instead of returning to Thurshcross Grange to where her father lies on his deathbed.
In the novel Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, Heathcliff is an orphan boy brought to Wuthering Heights by Mr. Earnshaw, who has two children of his own already - Catherine and Hindley. Heathcliff changes over the course of his life by the following; Heathcliff begins by getting along well with Catherine Earnshaw, however, Catherine Earnshaw is introduced to Edgar Linton and Heathcliff becomes jealous of their forming relationship, and once Catherine has passed away after delivering Edgar’s child, Heathcliff becomes haunted by her ghost, and wishes to only be united with her in death.
Catherine Earnshaw is the daughter of Mr. Earnshaw and his wife; Catherine falls powerfully in love with Heathcliff, the orphan Mr. Earnshaw brings home from Liverpool. She was born at Wuthering Heights and was raised with her brother Hindley. Catherine loves Heathcliff so intensely that she claims they are the same person but does not marry him because Hindley has degraded him after their father's death so her desire for social advancement motivates her to marry Edgar Linton instead, a neighbour from Thrushcross Grange and he is handsome and rich, another reason for Catherine marrying him. She is quite passionate about Heathcliff though, and does not want to give him up. She becomes ill when Heathcliff and Edgar fight, and dies in childbirth.
From being isolated in the moors of England, with only the two houses-Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange. And those are placed 4 miles apart from each other. Having grown up at Wuthering Heights, Catherine, Hindley, and Heathcliff all suffer from a lack of love and structure. Wuthering Heights is a very bleak and dark place, that isn’t too happy. None of them found happiness until they fled from that dreary place that they call home. Heathcliff is grumpy and mean, and wants to inflict that on everyone else around him. Hurt people, hurt people. As opposed to Thrushcross Grange, which is more structured. Edgar and Isabella are more compassionate people, because of the love that they received from their parents. It also leaves them vulnerable to Catherine and Heathcliff’s aggressive nature, as well as a ploy in Heathcliff’s plan. Knowing this, Catherine is only stuck with two options-marry Heathcliff or Edgar. Based on the decision she made (good or bad, depending on the person) it started a spiral of events that currently effects Linton, Hareton, and Cathy. The same thing is to be said about Cathy. Cathy is still in the same environment. Though she is growing up at Thrushcross Grange, and be raised by her father and Nelly. Hareton is growing up at Wuthering Heights, under the wrath of Heathcliff, which is not pleasant. He is becoming mean and malicious, something Heathcliff wants. Then you have Linton who grew up
Heathcliff and Catherine have loved each other since their childhood. Initially, Catherine scorned the little gypsy boy; she showed her distaste by “spitting” at him (Brontë 27). However, it was not long before Heathcliff and Catherine became “very think” (Brontë 27). They became very close friends; they were practically brother and sister (Mitchell 122). Heathcliff is intent upon pleasing Catherine. He would “do her bidding in anything” (Brontë 30). He is afraid of “grieving” her (Brontë 40). Hindley, being the only biological son of Mr Earnshaw, was envious of the relationship shared between Mr Earnshaw and Heathcliff and burned with fury. He made no effort to hide his resentment toward Heathcliff. Hindley despised Heathcliff to such an extent that when Mr Earnshaw died, he treated Heathcliff more like a servant and bided him to talk to Catherine. Life then became miserable for Heathcliff and then became revenge driven. Hindley’s abusive and arrogant attitude toward Heathcliff, resulted in the chain of revengeful events that occurred in the novel.
When Hindley is drunk, Heathcliff “cheat[s] Mr. Hindley”(63) at cards. This is part of Heathcliff’s revenge on Hindley. Eventually, Hindley has to mortgage Wuthering Heights in order to pay his debts, and Heathcliff is able to gain possession of Wuthering Heights. Heathcliff tells Cathy, Catherine and Edgar’s daughter, that Linton, his son, “is on his deathbed”(255) and that she should come visit him. Cathy feels obligated to go help Linton, so she and Nelly go to Wuthering Heights. Once they arrive, Heathcliff locks them in and tells them “you shall not quit this place till it is fulfilled”(261); implying that they will not be able to leave until Cathy marries Linton.
