All over the world, there are many people who believe in something or someone of a higher power. There are about five billion people who believe in a higher power (Tiemann 526). There are six world religions that have followers all around the world. The six world religions are Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism. Many of these religions are monotheistic, which is the belief of only one god or one higher power. There are also polytheistic believers, which is the belief in many or more than one god. These six world religions have a lot in common and they also have their differences that make their certain religion or belief special to them. Christianity is the most widespread religion in the world with two billion followers. Many aspects of Christianity are based on Judaism (Tiemann 526). Christianity is based on the life, teachings, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Christ’s message to everyone is personal salvation and also promises faith and love triumphs over sin and death. The origins of Christianity are based on the book that Christians read, the Holy Bible. Christians believe the Bible is God’s word. In the Bible, God talks about The Ten Commandments. The Ten Commandments are agreements between God and his chosen people. Christianity is an example of monotheism. What makes up the God that Christians believe is God the Father, God the son and God the Holy Spirit. The three of these makes up the Trinity of Christianity (Brown 76). Some of the Christian practices are gathering at churches for worship, fellowship and engage in the world through evangelism. One of the beliefs that Christians have is Jesus will come back to earth and take those who believe in Him back to Heaven. Christianity first emerged in mid-1st century CE, from Palestine and Israel. Christians believe that God is the sole creator of the universe, and that his son, Jesus, died for humans on the cross to save them from sin. Christians believe in an eternal life after death, in either a Heaven or a Hell, and that the way to Heaven is accepting God as the only God, and leading a holy life. Christians also acknowledge the existence of Satan, the spirit that personifies all evil and malice in the world. The holy book of Christianity is the Bible, which is believed to be the word of God. The Bible tells tales of fights between good and evil. The Bible says that God gave humans the Ten Commandments, and that those who follow the Commandments will gain access to Heaven. In many religions, the theme of good against evil is apparent. One of these religions is Zoroastrianism, which is believed to be the first religion to use this concept of good against evil. Another of this religion that is similar is the mythology of Ancient Egypt. The teachings of Buddhism is also full of teachings that relate to the theme of good against evil. The stories within the Bible are similar to those within Zoroastrianism, Egyptian mythology, and Buddhism.
Christianity is one of the largest religions in the world. Christians are found in almost every corner of the earth. The religion has various traditions, beliefs, and restrictions. Christians believe in the teachings of Jesus Christ whom they take to be the Son of God. They are guided by teachings contained in the Bible. According to the scriptures, the Jesus Christ was sent to earth by God to help redeem mankind from its sin. He was crucified so that all those who believe in him are saved. The adherents of the religion believe that he will return to earth a second time when it is time to pass judgment on mankind. In our world today, many people are either born and raised into a religion or eventually grow into becoming part of one. Two different types of religions are: monotheism and polytheism. Monotheism is the doctrine or belief that there is only one god. Well-known Monotheistic religions are: Judaism, Christianity, and Islamic. Polytheism is the belief in or worship of more than one god. Most religions throughout history have been noted to have been Polytheistic.
After reading The Next Christendom by Philip Jenkins I found that this book reminded me of a memorable passage from the movie Apollo Thirteen: a military man in the tense Houston control shares with a political figure his forewarning that the tragedy before will be the catastrophic moment for the space program Mission control flight chief Gene Kranz overhears their conversation and addresses it: 'With all due respect, gentleman, I believe this will be our finest hour.' This summarizes the book quiet well as the apparent demise of the western church (when the day comes) is forecasting on its fate over against the perceived adversaries of secularism and post-modernism. Jenkins reminds us that when view through a wide-screen lens so to speak, the inherent threat often yields to a broad outlook of opportunity, painting a clear picture of the future of Christianity in colors unaccustomed to American thinking, outlining the characteristics of the fast growing Christian churches that are outside of Western Europe and US. Jenkins also shows the possibility of conflicts between Christianity and other major religions (such as Islam or Hinduism). Speculating what affects this will have on established churches of having a Christian majority outside the west. The basic premise of this book I think is simply: the heart of Christendom has moved from the northern hemisphere to the southern hemisphere, what is surprising about this premise is that the northern hemisphere did not see the move, and still deny that it is moving.
Confucianism is a philosophy and way of life formed in China by Confucius, an early Chinese philosopher. It began as a simple concept with ideals of personal virtue, simple filial piety, and basic gender distinctions and social inequalities. But, over time with the emergence of Neo-Confucianism it began to transform into a way of life that was degrading towards women with certain hostilities towards rivaling religions. In its early period, from around 500 B.C.E to the Common Era, Confucianism changed in that it became the leading belief system and a major part of Chinese tradition. From the transition into the Common Era to the end of the Classical time period, Confucianism was altered because of a loss of popularity following the collapse of the Han dynasty and the corruption in the governing political system. In its ending period, the post-classical era, Confucianism underwent perhaps its biggest adjustments with the emergence of Neo-Confucianism.
