The Wolf
We called *Jamie Masterson “Wolf” because when things got crazy, you could expect a long Virginia backwoods howl from Wolf. He did it, to relieve stress. Everyone within ear-shod, could relate to it. We all wanted to howl sometimes.
Wolf, myself, Sergeant Bosworth and Claude Von Plueren of hung out together after work. To relieve stress, we'd tell stories and drink a few beers. Wolf liked to laugh a lot and he admired Sergeant Bosworth.
In his early twenties, and fresh out of the military, Wolf stood tall and as skinny as a rail. His broken front tooth, was his most identifying feature. Wolf and I popped a few cell doors together and I respected Wolf for that.
On October 16th, 1987, Wolf and I stood near the bottom of the stairs of 5A and 5B. We shook down inmates as they came back from mainline. Inmates walked in single file, behind a 3 ft rail when returning to Super Max. A few feet to my left Wolf pat searched inmate *Nick Bender.
A short man, in his 30's, with a beard, Bender was the leader of the Aryan Brotherhood gang in Super Max. If Bender gave an order, his soldiers obeyed it. He was the most powerful inmate in Super Max. I turned, just as Bender stuck his finger in Wolf's face.
“YOU’D BETTER NEVER TOUCH ME AGAIN!” Wolf looked over at me, smiled and Bender stomped up the upstairs to 5A and 5B and then up to #7 walk. Wolf and I followed the line of inmates.
On 7 walk, Bender waited for Wolf and confronted him again. The rest of the inmates stood in front of their cells, but refused to go in.
Wolf had managed to piss-off Super Max's leader of the Aryan Brotherhood and, he had done it in front of his men. I don't think Wolf realized the gravity of the situation. Inmates would do anything Bender told them ...

... walked into the penitentiary with pride and confidence. Come and get me, you sons-of-bitches!! Just try to take me out! My fear and dread conquered, I was ready for battle.
A day or two later, they let Bender out of lockup. Without Wolf’s report charging him with assault, they decided to let him go. The whole thing was dropped. Bender hadn't been out of the hole 24 hours when the Batman walked up to me.
“You know they let Nick out!”
“I heard that.”
“Forget about about what I said. No ones mad anymore.”
“Whatever. Now get back in line and down to rec!”
As for Wolf, I never saw him again. I don’t know if he was re-assigned, placed on another shift or quit. To this day, I have never seen or heard from him.
Author's Note: A search of Bender shows that he is serving a Life Sentence in the State of Missouri. His original sentence was for assaulting and stabbing a man.
“The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown” ― H.P. Lovecraft. Fear drives mankind to hate what he cannot comprehend. With this irrational fear mankind is controlled and set on a path of destruction and chaos. In the autobiography Never Cry Wolf written by Farley Mowat, the main character (Farley Mowat), journeys to the Canadian tundra to study the much-feared wolf. There he discovers the fear brought upon by men, and how it can result horribly for the wolves. The human race was so frightened by the unknown species that they began to blame the wolves for cold slaughters, portrayed them as vicious killers, and because of the fear of the unknown tried to exterminate wolves all together.
the novel has an unpleasant personality, looks frightening, and has revenge on the top of his mind. The antagonist of the novel is a wolf named Malumclaw. To begin with, Malumclaw’s personality is very unpleasant. In particular, he is very shrewd and short-tempered. In fact, it has been presented in the novel that he has “ exploded” on many people with his anger, and does not take ridiculous behavior from anyone. Also, the wolf is very serious. Meaning, he is a no- nonsense behavior person. Furthermore, he will snap at anyone quite easily, and will not tolerate a break in any deal he makes. Colfer states, “ Deal. But let me warn you, if you
It has been said that the wolf is one of the most voracious and horrifying animals that exist in nature today. But, in all reality, is that actually true? One is unable to make an assumption such as this without a firsthand experience, or so that is expressed in In The Shadow of a Rainbow and Never Cry Wolf. Authors Robert Franklin Leslie and Farley Mowat make every attempt to convey the true nature of the wolf throughout their journeys, as they prove claims falsely accusing wolves, with documented evidence of complete vigilance. These works of literary nonfiction effectively refute anti-wolf claims made within them through being dangerous to the wildlife, dangerous to humans, and viciousness.

Long before the settlers started to make the United States their home, “American Indians lived long beside the Gray Wolf before settlers started to come here.” (Rowe, Mark) The wolf is native to the North American continent and has been inhabiting its land for centuries. It is a canid species, or member of the canine family and is a cunning, smart, fast, and sly animal. Gray wolves range in color from black, brown, gray, and white and also look like a grown German Shepherd. They are well known for traveling in family sizes from 7-9 wolves, led by the alpha male and have a mate. They are a fierce animal that has been researched extensively because of their unique qualities and that they are near extinction.
“I drew a beam on him, remembered what Atticus had said, then dropped my fists and walked away.”
Six thousand years ago in Northern Europe a teenager named Torak wakes up with his shoulder throbbing in pain. His father lies next to him bleeding from an open wound. The two have been attacked by an enormous demon bear, which is bound to come back at any moment. As he bleeds out, Torak’s father can only bare to say a few more words. He says that the demon bear will only grow stronger with each kill it makes, and he also tells Torak that he has to go to the Mountain of the World Spirit in order to defeat the bear. With his last few breaths he reveals that a guide will find Torak and lead him to the mountain. There is so much more that Torak wants to know, but it is too late. He hears the bear crashing through the forest and takes off in the opposite direction. After running for miles Torak stumbles upon a small wolf den that had been destroyed by a flash flood. The only wolf who survived the flood is a small wolf pup. The pup gives a small howl and instantly memories of the past begin to flow through Torak. At a very young age Torak’s mother died and his father placed him in a wolf den for three months. The wolves took him in and raised him as one of their own. While in the den Torak formed a strong bond with the wolves and learned how to communicate with them. Back at the den the pup begins to howl, and Torak joins in. The two become great friends and treat each other like brothers. The wolf calls Torak Tall Tailness and Torak calls the pup Wolf. The brothers track, hunt, and play together for many moons. Torak comes to the realization that Wolf is his guide, and together they begin to head north towards the Mountain of the World Spirit.

Once there was a wolf named Wilbert. He was the largest, most terrifying wolf around but of course his name had to be Wilbert, not something intimidating like Bruce or Santino, but wimpy little Wilbert. But that wasn’t the worst of it, his parent’s decided to give him a full name, a first, two middle, and a last, and that name was Wilbert Oliver Laymek Fabi-ano, or WOLF as all of his friends called him, well they would if he had any friends, he tends to eat them all. YUMMY....... Everyone in the pack knew that Wilbert was a trouble maker ever since the time that they caught him trying to blow down poor little innocent pigs houses. But as time went on his so called “thug life” started to increase and his street cred went up dramatically. On Wilbert’s 18th birthday he was issued the ultimate challenge, to try and steal a muffin from a pic-a-nic basket (said like Yogi Bear). Yeah that’s right Wilbert had to steal a muffin, I bet you were expecting there to be some epic challenge for him to steal a tooth from a sleeping dragon while he’s covered in liquid nitrogen and surrounded by littl...
Canis Lupus, the Latin term for the “North American Wolf”. A meat eating mammal with the capability of weighing up to 180 pounds and reaching a height of sixty-three inches, the wolf is easily the largest member of the canine family. Over 500,000 wolves once lived in harmony, roaming the Northern Americas alongside the Native American tribes and the rest of the ecosystem. Wolves live in packs, a pack essentially being a family. While the average size of a pack is six to ten, the largest confirmed pack recorded in North America can be found in Yellowstone National Park where the “Druid Pack” numbers thirty-seven strong and counting. There have been alleged reports of a pack that attacked a small Russian town killing thirty horses in just four days. This pack numbered up to almost 400 members. Animal experts remain suspicious due to the fact that this number is almost fifteen times the size of an average sized pack. Wolves heavily rely on their pack. Every member of the pack has a specific job that benefits the pack, without the pack, death would be almost imminent. The pack is set up as a hierarchy, with an alpha male and an alpha female. The alphas get the best of everything, the best part of the kill, the best sleeping spot, and the breeding rights. When hunting, one member will scout ahead and will determine the weakest member of the herd. Once determined, the rest of the pack will chase the animal down and either takes it down on the run or chase it until it tires out. Unlike many predators in the animal kingdom, wolves eat their prey alive. While wolves are known for their spine tingling howls, the howl is not the only way they communicate. “Wolf Language” so to speak, consists of many grunts, snarls, growls, yips, and whines....
They said it was just. All I could remember were the high pitched screams of the people we were “helping”, and the bitterness of losing Scott. Didn’t even know how they died. One minute he was there, then he was gone.
For the characters in Angela Carter's “The Company of Wolves,” danger lurks in the the grey areas, the ambiguous spaces between opposites. The plethora of socially constructed binaries—male and female, passive and active, innocence and maturity, civilization and wilderness, man and wolf—have the ability to be harmful and restrictive, but perhaps more worryingly, they create an ill-defined middle ground between where the rules are vague and fluid, which allows for dishonesty and deception, and Carter foregrounds the resultant proliferation of untruths as the real peril. One vehicle for clear and honest communication, however, is the narrator's changing characterization of the
We headed for Court 9 and I was told to wait outside. My feet shifted uneasily beneath me. A set of double doors stared back at me in an intense locking of eyes. Suddenly, they swung open.
