Hispanic's influence in Florida dates back for more than 500 years when the Spanish arrived and began to establish their permanent settlements. I am proud to say I?m an American of Hispanic descent. As a second generation Cuban-American and a Native of Florida, it is important for me to learn and pass down the unique qualities and richness of my Hispanic roots, culture and traditions.
From birth the Hispanic heritage has had a strong impact on me. Being raised in a bilingual home and learning Spanish in school, has provided me the advantage to communicate in both languages. Hispanic- Americans can socialize and understand both the English and Spanish community in Florida. Hispanics can also share my language with those of non- Hispanic descent. As I approach my college years and life, I think I will benefit from being bilingual.
Like the influence of the Spanish language, Hispanics have made many significant contributions Florida. In business, science, politics and education Hispanics have been a key factor in Florida?s development and its economy. It?s essential for people to know how Hispanics have contributed to this state, because without Hispanics the state of Florida may not be what it is today. It is important not only for me to learn of their accomplishments but to learn from them so that I too can be a productive Hispanic leader in my community.
Hispanics have a beautiful and unique culture. Our music, dancing and delicious foods have become an integral part of Florida. In Florida, we have been able to share these with everyone.
It is important to know about Hispanic culture and traditions so that I can teach others that aren?t Hispanic or don?t know the culture. Everyone should know about the Hispanic culture in Florida because it?
It is in the solving of social problems in which Hispanics can be of tremendous service to the country. One of the greatest attributes of hispanics is the willingness to mix, and by doing so, have created cultural forms, new human relationships, and life styles. Because this, Hispanics can help look for solutions to barriers, prejudices, and stereotypes that have divided us as a
On the other hand, Americans are proud of their way of life and they always have the assumption that everyone shares their materialistic values. Language is an important value for the nationalistic identity of a nation. Hispanic culture is the way of life of people from Latin America and Spain, and their main identifying factor is the fact that they speak Spanish as their main language. Therefore, Hispanics are not necessarily Spaniards but other groups like Mexicans, Puerto Ricans and Cubans who speak Spanish are also part of this group (Shaw and Dennison 207). American culture, on the other hand, is mainly comprised of the people who speak English as their main dialect.
Puerto Rico is a small island in the Caribbean that holds a vast, and rich culture. Due to its accessible geographical location, it is often called the key to the Caribbean. Puerto Rico enriched its people with one of the most innate and unique culture different from the rest of the world. The colonization of Spaniards left us not only with myriad architectural heritage, but also with language and cultural traditions that beholds Hispanic imagery and representations. Our music, our love of dancing and festivities, as well as our practice of Catholic beliefs represents
Just like other immigrating Latino groups, Cubans share the same stereotypes when they are categorized as criminals, violent and others as well as having to face barriers for employment, housing and economics. However, most of the discrimination that Cuban Americans face is due to their ties to their home country. For example, most Cubans are stereotyped as extremists who despise Fidel Castro. The main push factor for Cuban immigrants was the regime of Castro in their home country. In contrast, other Latino immigrants are mainly pushed out of their country because of economic reasons. Therefore, while Cuban immigrants are seen as extremists or anti-Castro activists, most other Latino immigrants are merely seen as immigrants who come to “take jobs”. As mentioned, Cubans are not categorized as immigrants who come to the United States in hopes for a better economic life, they are seen as political refugees who are in search of better political conditions. This is one of the main differences between Cubans and other Latinos, because of this, Cubans are thought to be more prosperous than other Latino groups. However, this is a faulty stereotype because, although some Cuban Americans are better off economically than most other Latino groups, the majority of them still face countless amounts of
My parents did everything they knew to help my sister and I learn and respect our Mexican culture. Born into American culture but raised by Hispanic parents, often was difficult for me. Since I was little I had to manage and balance two very different cultures at the same time. There were many times while growing up that I encountered complex situations in regards to language, whether to speak Spanish or English and when it was appropriate. I felt a lot of pressure having to act as an interpreter for my parents when we were out in public. At home I was told to speak Spanish so I would not forget, but at school I was taught to only speak English with my teachers and friends. However, when we would go visit family in Mexico, I was expected to only speak in Spanish, since speaking in English in front of family members who only spoke Spanish was seen as disrespectful. So learning two languages has been very beneficial to my life and for my family. By
Throughout the experiences I have been through, such as meeting proud Latin kids in school and reading about the experiences of other Latinos, I am proud to say that I am Puerto Rican. I will teach the future generation about our culture, including traditions and customs. My children may not have the opportunity to read about well-known Latinos in school, but I will make sure they learn about prominent scholars, such as Jose Marti and Rigoberta Menchu. Also, speaking Spanish is very important because our culture is based on the language. After all, one day the official language of Puerto Rico might change to English. However, we can't forget our roots, or where we came from. Even though I was born in America, I am Puerto Rican.
The Hispanic community represents many nationalities and ethnicities, including Mexicans, Cubans, Puerto Ricans, 15 Central and South American countries, Spain, and the Dominican Republic (Cattan, 1993). Hispanic group are well known in the workforce, politics, education, social economic and religion. The Spanish culture influences a variety of areas such as music, food, language. Most languages are rooted in Latin. It is always good to learn about other cultures if we expect the same consideration when we visit other countries. Differences are what make life interesting. Majority of the United States is built on immigration, which has made this country the most diverse. And the Hispanic group contributes to that diversity.
As far as personal experience, living in Miami,-Florida, as a none-Cuban Latin, makes it easier to have an insight in all kinds of prejudice and stereotypes within the same Hispanic society. This behavior makes it hard to not feel negatively judged by others who do belong to the majority group. Unfortunately prejudice is not simply an attitude that remains internal to its owner; it impacts behavior. When negative attitudes on the basis of differences translate into behavior, we have as a result, discrimination and the social inequity it produces. Therefore, efforts to reduce prejudice are well advised to take the social context into consideration when focusing on the individuals' attitudes.
Culture is a learned system of knowledge behaviors attitudes beliefs values and norms that are shared by a group of people. Spanish culture comprises people from many different countries including Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico, South or Central America. Latinos are a community that have a history of colonization from Spain i.e., people from Latin America, whereas Hispanics are a community through a connection of Spain. In America, there are three largest sub groups which include Mexican Americans, Puerto Rican, and Cubans. Lot of people immigrated to United States for a chance at better lives for themselves and their children. They are very family oriented and most of their values focus on helping everyone in the family and around them. According
Not being of Hispanic or Latino descent, one can only wonder what it would be like paving the way for others to follow. Meanwhile, migrating to a state like Florida can be very challenging. After all, Florida is diverse and is considered a melting pot state, along with the influx of different origins of nationalities, there are different arrays of celebration of music, dance and food. Many people that come to the United States are comfortable speaking their own language and will refuse to speak the American language which is English. In some instances, in the work environment being able to speak both languages (Spanish and English) can be beneficial and conducive. Therefore, being Bilingual can be an access for the individual.
Every culture around the world have different characteristics, many may seem very similar, however, one would be naïve to assume that they are. Cuban American and Mexican American cultures, have many features such as language which can lead one to think they share a similar culture, hence they should be treated the same way based on their culture. These two cultures, although, they have similar physical features, and share the same language, they differ in many different aspects, such as religion, political beliefs, educational backgrounds and traditions.
I grew up in a Spanish-speaking family. I attended school in the U.S. since pre-k and I also had an older sister and brother who already spoke English. Two factors that I believe helped me in learning and comprehending the English language. I sometimes struggle having to bounce back and forth from each language. Additionally, I have also experienced perks of being bilingual. I actually obtained my first job as a translator. Most people are told that employers are more likely to hire bilingual speakers. However, this is all that is being said about bilingual speakers. I have not been aware of people having conversations of the effects of being a bilingual speaker. For this reason, I believe it is a subject that is both interesting and not heard much
As the Hispanic Caribbean has evolved it has managed to grow and thrive beyond belief, whether one is discussing art, music or just the culture alone the Hispanic Caribbean is truly reaping the benefits of allowing themselves to be influenced by many other cultures. While the Hispanic Caribbean is thriving they are still facing the many new found struggles that come along with the territory of becoming more affluent as well as more accepting to other cultures and their beliefs. Often with the growth of large proportions comes many problems, problems also can come about when incorporating of different cultures as a whole as well as just bringing in their beliefs and mannerisms. None the less it can be argued that the struggles being faced in
... how to speak fluently in two languages is because they think it will confuse their child and mess them up with their first language, which is wrong. Children can benefit from being bilingual when it comes to schooling, because knowing more than one language can help that child figure things out easier and simpler than a monolingual would know how to do. Jobs also have a big effect on bilingual people, they can attract business, and many companies need people who are bilingual. Music is also factors because many people listen to it daily learn many things about themselves and who they are. People usually do not think music can be such an effect on people’s lives and their culture but it does and there is proof of it. Overall, teaching a child to be fluent in more than on language will have many positive effects on him/her and will benefit from them completely.
Culture and traditions have shaped my identity by the music I listen to, the way I talk, the languages I speak, the foods I eat, and the occasions I celebrate. Coming from a Hispanic heritage has influenced me greatly, my ethics and morals are partially based on my and my family's background. Because of my culture, I am able to speak and understand Spanish, cook and eat Hispanic dishes, and understand the meaning of Spanish holidays.
