Thomas Aquinas was an influential Dominican Friar, theologian, and philosopher who lived from 1225 to 1274 AD. Aquinas was born in a town called Roccasecca in Italy. Since Aquinas followed the scholastic tradition, he obtained knowledge by dialectical reasoning. After studying both Aristotelian and Neo-Platonism, Aquinas adopted his own theology. Aquinas’ underling theology was the compatibility of faith and reason when proving the existence of God. Aquinas wrote several works and specifically with his theology in mind he wrote Summa Theologica and the Summa contra Gentiles.
Aquinas’ first education was received from Benedictine monks at the Abbey of Monte Cassino. After oppressed military authority took over the City of Abbey, he continued his education at the University of Naples. At the university, he learned about the philosophy of Aristotle and the recently established Dominican order, which he joined without approval of his family.
