Passion is what pushes us to succeed in everything we do, but what happens when the thing we love to do is also putting our lives at risk? Anyone can become injured while participating in his or her passion. It only takes the simple act of wrong footing or the slip of a hand while doing what we love to cause numerous doctor visits and surgeries. There seem to be some people though that “simply cannot resist the danger,” these are the people who risk their lives, not just their health, countless times all for their passion. (James 138) Bethany Hamilton took the risk of a shark attack everyday when she drug her board out into the ocean water, and Joe Slowinski took the risk when he bare handedly caught highly venomous snakes every day. Almost everything thing we do has risks, but at what point does our passion for something become dangerous and harmful instead of bringing joy to us?
It is okay to have a healthy obsession, but when your life revolves around your passion it can become dangerous when you get caught up in the act of “obsessive routine” and take these deadly risks on a daily basis. (Evans 2010) In “Teen Surf Addict,” Bethany Hamilton used her obsession to motivate her and help push her through hard times. It “fed her resolve to get back in the water.” (Teen Surf Addict 2) Even though she was putting herself in hazardous situations daily, she used her passion to fuel her, instead of allowing her passion to consume her life. Bethany herself said, “Surfing is an addiction, a pleasure rush.” Bethany Hamilton is unlike Ron Huff from Fatal Attractions, whose “love for animals completed his life.” (Evans 2010) Ron’s love for lizards became an obsession but not one that helped him prosper. Ron was adrift in the world of his re...

...e dangers that can be caused by our actions, become careless and apathetic while working, and disassociate ourselves from normal activities due to our obsessive characteristics towards our passion. Having substantial determination towards our passion is imperative, but without taking time to evaluate what you are performing and how to do it safely, our passions might not provide the delectation that we look towards them for. Even though Joe Slowinski accepted the fact that “the way he lived and worked might someday be the death of him,” he still worked vigorously towards his goals aimed towards his passion. He was a loss to the worlds herpetology program but a very conspicuous loss, because deaths like Joe Slowinski’s death keep the rest of the world in bewilderment about our passion and the risks we should take until we realize one day that we have taken too many.
Addiction /ə-ˈdik-shən, a-/ noun 1. A strong and harmful need to regularly have something (such as a drug) or do something (such as gamble), 2. An unusually great interest in something or a need to do or have something (Addiction). Addiction can cause a person to sabotage their lives in order to get their next fix, whether that be scoring another gram of coke or a double with cheese, a large fry, and a large soda. Addicts are stuck in a constant cycle of getting cravings, going through with their ritual, using, experiencing guilt, and being emotionally triggered, thus bringing them back to the beginning. Now, most people when they hear the word “addiction”, the first thing that comes to their mind is drugs. However, if a vast majority of individuals
It is good to be determined and passionate about the things that you are learning and doing, but it is not good to become obsessive about anything. In most cases obsession tends to lead people down the wrong path or cause them to make the wrong decisions in their life. One of the things that people used to be obsessed with was knowledge. This is because people knew so little about the world and about themselves. People were very curious about certain things and some decided to accidentally try things out which led to discoveries. But others decided to become obsessed about the subject that they were studying and destroy their lives in the process. One example is Frankenstein. He was a giant dumb smart person that was also obsessive about science
Reynaud, M., Karila, L., Blecha, L. & Benyamina, A. (2010). Is love passion an addictive disorder?.The American Journal Of Drug And Alcohol Abuse, 36 (5), pp. 261--267.
Some people claim to be addicted to something when they really love it, but some addictions are very real. These addictions are not only real, but they're so strange you might not even believe they're real. Well, they are. Check them out for yourself below.
We all know that staying safe will keep us alive, but it is a boring way to live. The biggest regret a person can have is never trying what they always wanted. As mentioned before, time never stops, so it is crucial that they act now. We fight a battle before we are even born against millions of others to see who will get to the egg first and be fertilized and born. We did not come to this world to just be safe and to be afraid to do new things. We all have a reason to be here and the journey of life is to find our purpose in life. It is what makes life so great, but to get their we must take risks and overcome that fear. People are afraid of taking risks because of failure. They are afraid to fail and not get anywhere. However, that fear can be overcome is they keep pushing and keep trying and keep taking risks. Taking risks will get a person out of their “safe” comfort zones and the result of this can be something so
In “Do What You Love? #@&** That!” by Jeff Haden, he explains how telling people to do what they love in their career is advice that is disastrous. Haden tells his readers that “That advice has probably resulted in more failed businesses than all the recessions combined…because that’s not how the vast majority of people end up owning successful businesses” (qtd. in Haden 463). Haden also mentions that to feel a real sense of passion you have to produce something important, gain respect for it, and feel control over your life (Haden 463). Not everyone agrees to mix passion and their business life together since some people think it’s two completely different things, but somehow someone’s work life becomes a passion without them realizing it has or without them even trying to make their work life a passion. Haden points out that “Passion is not something you follow. Passion is something that will follow you as you put in the hard work to become valuable to the world” (qtd. Haden 463). Even though not everyone chooses to follow their passion, in some way someone ends up doing something they enjoy and later on possibly love. Everyone has a job, some don’t get to choose the job that they specifically want, but they do choose one over another based on what they’ll enjoy more. People may choose
You never know where new discoveries can take you. Finding something that was unknown can always change an outlook or a perception of an idea, an object, or maybe even a person. Would you believe that Vlad Tapes/ Vlad the Impaler or even Dracula really existed with the right facts to back it up? If you even had the suspicion and some evidence, would you spend years trying to figure out if it was true? Finding information cloaked in history can become an obsession. Obsessions can become a dangerous thing that some people just don’t know when to let go and leave well enough alone. An obsession is a thought or idea that consumes a person’s brain and causes them to focus on that one thing. Infatuations can be dangerous and sometimes people even get killed due to one. They can be a variety of things. The book used to sculpt this essay showed a fixation for chasing down a murderous fiend called Dracula.
"Obsession is a commitment; you have to believe in it, because it soon takes you over." A chilling statement made by Pilar Vilades in a New York Times Magazine article regarding how time consuming an obsession can be. This is exceptionally true in cases of OCD. The human mind is truly one of this world's wonders, and watching how a person with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder behaves will cause one to cherish sanity. However, even those who are considered sane experience their share of obsessive feelings in the more benign form of infatuation. Whichever word is used to describe it, the essence of both words resides in the dominance of one's mind by a single, reoccurring thought.
Being too passionate about something or someone, can sometimes over ride one's good judgement. Too much passion can bring about ever-lasting consequences and regrets. When put into a tense, specific situation, you usually wont make wise choices. You wont stop and think, "what is going on" or "what is the right thing to do" but instead, we let our emotions take over. For instance, in the play Othello, Othello is passionately in love with his wife and when he hears a disturbing rumor about her, instead of thinking over what he heard or if it is true, he let his jealousy take over his actions.
Generally, each human has an obsession, it could be anything like video games or cell phones. But your obsession or your affection to someone or an object can occasionally lead you to bad decisions. Roald Dahl’s tale with a twist, “The landlady”, takes place in Bath. Billy has arrived in Bath for business, and he needs to find a low-priced hotel. Billy appears across a bed and breakfast to be a guest of. The landlady allows him to stay the night for a cheap price. The landlady manipulates Billy to get him to stay so she can poison him, and eventually stuff him; keeping him as a beautiful possession. The landlady is obsessed with youth, beauty and ends up killing and stuffing Billy. The main lesson of the story is that obsession can lead you
Obsession is defined as a compulsive preoccupation with a fixed idea or unwanted emotion (American Heritage). “Obsessions lead to anxiety (kids health).” To relieve their anxiety people will perform compulsions. Compulsion is defined as an irresistible impulse to act (American Heritage). An example of this would be someone who feels dirty may wash their hands 100 times a day (kids health). “In the United States, more than one million children this disorder (kids health).
When the modern college student says the word "obsession", they often use the term in conversation about a particular object, subject, action, or idea they really like; something they feel like they could not stand to live without. Previous to writing this paper, I might say that my obsession is ice cream or maybe even Audrey Hepburn movies. But while I sit and truly write my thoughts about the meaning of the word "obsession", I am beginning to realize that the idea of being obsessed with something is not as superficial or mundane as the average young adult may mistake it to be.
”A passion gives you a reason to keep learning and to work toward mastery. It can often give you a reason to travel, and therefore to have the new experiences so key to happiness. It gives you something in common with other people, and so fosters social bonds. It gives you purpose. It often has a satisfying physical aspect-rock-climbing, fly-fishing, and knitting. It gives meaningful structure to your time. It makes the world a richer place. When you're in pain, it can be a refuge, a distraction, a solace.”
Not every event has a guaranteed outcome- sometimes, one has to take a gamble in the game of life. There are some, however, who would prefer to travel within the safe, confined lane of actions with a definite outcome. Deciding whether or not to take risks in life can be tricky, but as Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Do not be too timid and squeamish about your actions. All life is an experiment.” This quote means that people should take risks in their endeavors, because life is precisely about trying new things and experiences. As the quote explains, taking risks in life is a vital step to success, fulfillment, and gaining more out of experiences.
Passion for Family, Community, Business, Technology and Intellectual growth are what motivate me on the daily basis. These are vital parts that have contributed to framing me into the person I’ve become. They have also shaped my short-term and long-term goals in life. It’s critical for one to have a vision for their life and what they anticipate to accomplish. Without a vision or desire there is no hope for one to continue and to purse anything. My experiences with in my passions have helped me aligned my vision for my life. They have given me the valuable knowledge that have set me up for success to get to this point in life.
