What does it mean to be an American?
The soil of the middle-east stained with the blood of our American soldiers just so we can not take advantage of our right to vote. Though sometimes questionable, America's overall image portrayed to other countries is an honorable one. America is known for its democracy and as well as being a land of opportunities and many freedoms. America's assortment of ethnicities and cultures is proof that our country is a desirable one. Wars are being fought at this very moment to defend these freedoms.
There are many battles that have dictated what America is and stands for today. Some of these battles were literal fights and others were ones of a societal nature. For example, The Civil War was a pivotal battle in American history that freed African-Americans from slavery which was led and won politically by Abraham Lincoln. Following this was Dr. Martin Luther King?s work which led to the end of segregation also against African-Americans. Currently, America is fighting a war on terrorism against several countries. From battle to diseases American grew as a country following the Civil War and this growth continued for a long time as the people remembered the events of the Civil War and why we are here today. America has grown to be the country it is today not by luck, but by the fact that it has struggled in trying to become an independent nation. Regardless of the hardships, turmoil, and chaos it has gone through, the events that occurred between the years 1865-1900 have caused America to be the independent nation that it is today.
From a young age, we are taught about the Civil War and how it was to free the slaves and after many battles and countless lives lost slaves were set free. Rarely would we go in depth of the real struggles America faced following the war. The turmoil that America had to work past; reconstruction, depressions, segregation, bigotry, sexism and continual racism.
The American Civil War fought from 1861 to 1865 is described as “the bloodiest conflict in the history of North America” (Feature Causes Of The Civil War). The Civil war or war between the states was fought for many economic, political and moral reasons tracing back to the very start of America. The civil war fought between the Northern and Southern states is truly a significant event in the history of the United States because it involved American citizens fighting against each other. The American civil war was initiated through the controversy over slave labor, unfair actions toward Southern states and the vast division between the Northern and Southern states.
Most of the conflicts within the United States came from sectionalism. Sectionalism was one of the bases that started the Civil war, but there were people like Abraham Lincoln that believed we should be one United country. Abraham explained
Throughout the United States turbulent history there has not been a worse conflict than the civil war. The issues that drove the country apart go back as far as the birth of the nation itself. During the years immediately prior to the outbreak of war numerous events set off a domino effect that eventually lead to the cessation of what was to become the Confederacy. Some of the most noteworthy events include the Compromise of 1850, The Fugitive Slave Act, Bleeding Kansas, and Brooks-Sumner affair.
Despite desire to be a unified independent nation, the U.S was destined for civil war since its birth. This was mainly due to the institution of slavery, which led to the political issues and debates of western expansion of slavery, the increase of sectionalism due to concerns over states’ rights, and increased pressure to reform slavery from the abolitionist movement.
What is the American flag and what does it represent? For many Americans the flag represents freedom, pride, and justice. Our flag stands for freedom because of the many lives that had to be lost throughout history for us to be the nation we are today. The American flag stands for pride because of the many American soldiers men and women who lost their lives for us. Lastly, our flag stands for justice because in the United States no matter what crime we do we have the right to a fair trial.
What does it mean to be an American? In my eyes to be an American means to have privileges, rights, and freedom. America isn't perfect, but it is one of the only countries that have rights given to people of different diversities and gender. America does not have tremendous poverty. Instead we have choices given to us by the people who fought and died for the American people. Without George Washington and the other patriots who planted the first seed in the ground and help plant the American nation we live in now who knows what America would be like now.
After living in years of peace, one event changed American history. The Americans were living a glorious life, but as arguments started to arise, the country began to split apart. Since the beginning of country, slave labor has been of important use. Many states in the North slowly started to abolish slavery, but the South did not want to end slavery. As more states joined the United States, debates grew if they should be free states or slave states. Many Southern states argued for the balance of slave and free states. Many people tried to compromise, but nothing would satisfy both the North and South. In the end it was brother against brother, in the fight for freedom!
Everyday when I begin to wake up, I smell the lovely red roses, I see the bright sunlight that is beaming on my face, I hear the birds singing and chirping, I touch my clean brown face, and I taste the breath of freedom that is blowing on me. Being an American is a privilege and an honor that wakes me up everyday. It is the “I pledge allegiance to the flag…. With liberty and justice for all.” It floats and glides in the sky as everyone is guaranteed an education, freedom, and prosperity. Being an America is a prestige, yet notable invisible award that makes hard work the birthplace of success. Everyone thinks it is good to be American because of there freedom that they fought for in the American Revolution. Yes it is great to be American but sometimes there not really the best at being the most kindest people. Other countries have there own view on Americans some hate us because of the wars that we start sometimes others hate us because they have heard bad things about us. Every country has there different views on us and some are good it just depends on who you ask. It is good to be an American because of the Freedom basically what it means when people say that they have there Freedom is that they can basically do what they want and be their own person they can have what religion they want without being judge for having a different religion from someone else, and there are other things.
The definition of an American, is someone who is a citizen of the United States. Many African Americans, and immigrants struggled to become actual Americans in their lifetimes, because others didn 't see them as actual people; and based it on the color of someone. In today 's world people who live in America consider themselves as Americans, but to me there is certain qualities that make a person an American. To me being a true American is not based off of what Country they were born in, or what race their parents are, or even if they were immigrated to the United States. People from all over the world would say that maybe people could base this off of someone 's family heritage, or where they were before they came to America. If you were asked what makes an American an American what would you base it off of? To me there are four specific characteristics that make a person a true American; those three things would be, freedom, individuality, belief in the country, and happiness.
My definition of what it means to be an American is having the ability to better my life, have a just government,able to prosper throughout my life, and to be free and proud to live in America. As an American I should be treated equally just like everyone else under the law and businesses. People strive for this when they live in different countries and states because it is not provided where they live so I should be able to take advantage of where I live to the fullest. If I am not able to do this then am I truely “free”? Being an American I want to wake up happy to be alive where I am currently living.
What makes a person an american? What is an American? Is it someone who votes for the president? Is it someone who takes a stand in what they believe in? People have very different views on what makes an American. It could be the people that fight for our safety. It could be the people that help make a home safe. It may even be a person who fights for themselves. What makes a person an American is not living in the united states. There are plenty of people that have migrated to America, and have the same believes as any U.S citizen. Each person in this hectic world have their own views politically, socially, and emotionally, but that doesn’t make someone an American. What I have seen in my life what makes a person an American, are these three qualities, integrity, gratitude, and power.
