Have you ever wondered why everywhere you go; there are obese individuals, that in turn all we have to help this struggle is dieting plans such as nutria system, jenny Craig, and Weight Watchers? As you can tell people nowadays are lazy, they don’t want to work to feel better; they want to eat a magical food without looking twice into it, though it is scientifically proven that a balanced meal and exercise daily gets these extra pounds off. So I therefore ask the question “What’s really in our food,” because not only are unnatural foods in every shape and form, they are unhealthy, but also are a hazard for our bodies.
Over a period the human body can develop a series of sicknesses when it intakes an excessive amount of artificial food, these sicknesses may include cancer, ADHD, and obesity. The human body is made to digest Earths natural nutrients, either if its meat, grains, herbs or crops. The question is ‘do we really want to know what we are consuming? Over the years, many scientists toiled in labs trying to figure out what chemically engineered products we would like best, either if it is from the taste, scent, texture, or appearance. Businesses care more about the wealth of the product than about our planet's well being. The scientists load up the product with a preferred amount of salt, sugar, and/or fat, just so the consumer will purchase the item. The dyes in food alone are so unnatural that they could cause serious complications in children.
Since you are now aware with all of these unreasonable things happening, are you curious about what of all of your boxed up food in your cupboards ingredients list means? Many food labels are what I call hazardous cover-ups, and deceptions that make you think one thing and consu...
... middle of paper ...
... you pick a packaged blueberry muffin instead of a brownie, you are actually getting the same as the brownie. The blueberries are made from chemicals, corn syrups, and other artificial stuff, all for the purpose of a longer shelf life.
Do not be the fools or the rundown simple-minded person; expand your knowledge on what goes on inside of you. Be in charge of your own life. Fight back for what is right and just plain immoral. Did you know that when you die and decompose, all of those chemicals and impurities in your system would stay the same for thousands or maybe even millions of years? I bet generations to come will look back on the irresponsible life we lived and will think how ignorant we were doing this to ourselves. Just please think about all I shared with you, for if I helped at least one person open their eyes to this issue, I have gotten my point across.
“For the first time in the history of the world, every human being is now subjected to contact with dangerous chemicals, from the moment of conception until death.” Why do people consciously consume unhealthy, processed foods which big corporations in America distribute? These foods can lead to potentially harmful affects on the human body. So why are these risky products sold and consumed? The main reasons are because processed foods taste great and companies make large profits from these unwholesome products. General Mills is the 6th largest food company in the world, and uses genetically modified ingredients, preservatives, and artificial flavors in their products. The product that will be analyzed will be the tasty, mouthwatering breakfast favorite, Reese’s Puffs.
American health, specifically our obesity epidemic, has grown into a trending media topic. A quick Google search will bring up thousands of results containing a multitude of opinions and suggested solutions to our nation’s weight gain, authored by anyone ranging from expert food scientists to common, concerned citizens. Amongst the sea of public opinion on obesity, you can find two articles: Escape from the Western Diet by Michael Pollan and The Extraordinary Science of Addictive Junk Food by Michael Moss. Each article presents a different view on where the blame lies in this public health crisis and what we should do to amend the issue. Pollan’s attempt to provide an explanation pales in comparison to Moss’s reasonable discussion and viable
The weight loss industry is a multi-billion dollar machine, perpetually fueled by not only new information, but also data that have remained true for decades. Although it is unsurprising that the human body will lose weight when it expends more calories than it consumes, new findings lead to several alternative diets and weight loss methods that gain much more popularity than the basic concept of eating less and exercising more. For
When we think of our national health we wonder why Americans end up obese, heart disease filled, and diabetic. Michael Pollan’s “ Escape from the Western Diet” suggest that everything we eat has been processed some food to the point where most of could not tell what went into what we ate. Pollan thinks that if America thought more about our “Western diets” of constantly modified foods and begin to shift away from it to a more home grown of mostly plant based diet it could create a more pleasing eating culture. He calls for us to “Eat food, Not too much, Mostly plants.” However, Mary Maxfield’s “Food as Thought: Resisting the Moralization of Eating”, argues differently she has the point of view that people simply eat in the wrong amounts. She recommends for others to “Trust yourself. Trust your body. Meet your needs.” The skewed perception of eating will cause you all kinds of health issues, while not eating at all and going skinny will mean that you will remain healthy rather than be anorexic. Then, as Maxfield points out, “We hear go out and Cram your face with Twinkies!”(Maxfield 446) when all that was said was eating as much as you need.
Many argue the importance of food and its nutritional value. Food Science has been a heavily debated topic for years. Today, this topic sparks even more controversy. In Michael Pollan’s book In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto, Pollan shares several aspects of insight on different topics about health and how it should be approached. Pollan breaks down his overall beliefs and explanations from food nutrients to health risk factors. This book has allowed many readers and scientists to approach eating and health from different perspectives.
For some time, scholars and writers have continuously debated as to what constitutes or defines the idea of healthy eating, mainly because of the increase in the number of people diagnosed with ailments associated with bad eating habits. It has quickly become the forefront of issue, particularly in the United States. In recognition of this on-going debate, this composition seeks to compare and contrast two well-known authors concerning how we think about and consume food. In Michael Pollan’s discussion, “Escape from the Western Diet,” he discusses the negative sides of nutrition science, including conflicting theories surrounding the elements of healthy food consumption and why solutions are essential for the Western diet and lifestyle. “Escape from the Western Diet,’’ is among the articles that talks about the eating habits of individuals in the society. In the article, Pollan points out not only the numerous conflicts concerning what types of diets – including carbohydrate-based, the inclusion of omega-3s, other nutrition-specific needs - that are believed to directly affect general health or specific illnesses, but also how western nutritionism compares to other countries diets affect longevity outcomes. In the end, Pollan suggests that the United States must seek solutions that move towards more natural, unprocessed, plant-based lifestyles that ensure that individuals are making what they consume a primary
For years, I have been eating what I want. Food choices are a significant factor that affects our health. What we like or crave, often, is the determining variable in what we eat. Finding the right balance of food choices is the key factor in improving our health benefits. Choosing nutrient-dense foods will provide more nutritional value than foods that are found to be low in nutrient density. Making the right choices in foods, however, is extremely difficult. Often, I find myself enthralled in the latest fad, not considering the subtext of the foods I am eating, such as nutrients, vitamins, healthy fats and unhealthy fats, cholesterol and minerals. The diet project underlined a three-day food entry intake that provided a dietary analysis report
Why are the chronic diseases and obesity rates of America rising? Supposedly, we have a great control of what goes in our foods. We can pick what to exclude or include in our foods and in addition, create or alter compounds from foods. Because of that, what was supposedly created to alleviate the obesity issue actually worsened it. “How?” you may ask. Unlike other aspects in science, the data was the problem. The data was unreliable and inconsistent due to the poorly conducted studies (Pollan, "Unhappy Meals"). The debate between Michael Pollan, the author of “Unhappy Meals” and a lover of whole foods, and David H. Freedman, the author of “How Junk Food Can End Obesity,” raises the question whether processed foods or whole foods are the solution to obesity. Pollan
The amount of information on what a healthy diet and weight are is almost limitless, and health standards continue to change as more research is completed. Adding to the confusion in the general populace, many different industries further muddy the waters with unrealistic body image standards, massive portion sizes, and food choices that have substandard ingredients that perpetuate obesity and poor health. Although many diet experts will offer that simply changing what we eat and reducing our weight will improve our health, the issue is more complex and confusion about proper nutrition, its links to disease, and diet failures will persist until the food industry and so called food experts focus on actual science and not their financial bottom
In the US from since the turn of the century, obesity has been a rising and very serious issue. In the 1980’s, western culture experienced a fitness surge, and the major food corporations began producing new products that were “fat free”, but the issue was fat free food did not taste as good so people would not buy it. To compensate the taste, the food companies replaced the fat with sugar.

Color is not essential in foods; it is simply added. Without coloring in our foods, all foods that are bright and cheery would be a drab gray. Many believe dyes make food taste better-although studies show dyes do not contribute anything but color (Salisbury). Artificial dyes make up more than 90% of all dyes used today (Salisbury). Ninety percent of...
More and More people are becoming concerned about what they eat, especially if they consume food products that are manufactured in food industries. However, it is hard to know what exactly you are consuming if food industries provide false nutrition content and mislead consumers by placing false advertisements on the packaging. When a company produces a product that contains misleading label, consumers are not receiving complete information about the food they are eating which could lead to health issues including allergies and problems with diabetes.
Food is the powerhouse of the body that provides the energy for daily activities. The talk on food is almost endless in the modern world. Concerns about food range from safety, nutrient value to its affordability. People have developed diverse opinions on the issues surrounding food. Safety, especially against food poisoning, has been the major point of interest to both the public and the health care professionals. It is common to see expiry dates or ‘sell by date’ warnings on food products to alert consumers of the looming danger if the food is consumed at a later date. However, the most intriguing debate on food to me is based on the question ‘what is real food?’ I have found myself caught trapped to give my opinion on the matter. Occasionally I avoid the question but seeing that it is a thing of this world we live in I decided to visit several places to get a piece of other people’s minds.
