What is Nursing?
A nurse is a person who has been formally educated to treat and take care of sick and injured people. There are several fields that a nurse can specialize in. There are nurses that handle older people in places like nursing homes. They mostly help the older people with basic tasks they can’t handle any more like bathing, using the bathroom, and taking their medicine. There are nurses that deal with only babies. Some of those nurses may take care and clean up babies that have just been born. (Santiago pg. 1)
Some of those same kinds of nurses may help the babies with deformities, sicknesses, or diseases that need a more specialized nurse to do. There is a kind of nurse that just monitors pregnant women. They basically educate women on what they should do or stay away from while they are pregnant. They will do monthly checkups to see how well they are handling there pregnancy. There are many different kinds of nursing that deal with different kinds of sicknesses and injuries. (Santiago pg. 1)
Levels of Nursing
There are four main nursing roles you can become. The first one and most basic one you can become is a certified nurse assistant (CNA). A CNA does most of the dirty work of a hospital or nursing home. They are the people who will bath and clean the patients. They also are usually the ones that will help carry the patients into their bed or wheelchair if they need it. They are directed by LPNs and RN’s to become a CNA you can take a class at a college or even just at a hospital. The class is usually at most only a month. You can also challenge the main test and if you get a good enough grades you won’t have to take any classes. (Santiago pg. 1)

But that is an option it is not mandatory to become a CNA. Then you can apply for the Registered nurse program which is (2) years. But you should want to take a year to complete your prerequisites so you wouldn’t mix it with your program but that is also an option. Once you have your RN license you must have 1-2 years of experience. You would want to take the program that is called the Bachelor of Science in nursing known as a (BSN). After you complete the (BSN) program you would have to get state certified. After that you would have to obtain your Masters or (PHD) in nursing. Then you can work as a nurse
You take two years of your start up classes with two years of just nursing classes. A lot of hospitals require experience, like an internship for a year. After you go to a four year school and get your BSN there are many fields of specialties you can study ("Requirements to Be a Nurse in the U.S."). Some can include rehabilitation nursing, cardiovascular nursing, and my favorite, pediatric nursing ("Explore Specialties."). Pediatric nursing would be something I would highly consider for many reasons. I have nannied my whole life and am very good with kids. You need to have a lot of patientions with some playfulness when dealing with kids. They get scared and need someone to tell them that everything is going to be ok. The majority of our society holds the notion that nurses are no more than trained professionals, working for a doctor, who simply provide medical care for the sick and informed. However, what nursing means to me goes deeper than that belief. Nursing is a profession in which individuals are responsible for not only the care of the sick and infirmed but are also responsible for being a support system and an educator, as well as an advocate for the promotion of optimal care. In today’s society, nurses are an important part of any medical facility’s investment. This paper will address the many different aspects of nursing in which nurse’s act as not only caregivers but also act as, counselors and educators.
What is a nurse? According to the dictionary, a nurse is someone who is trained to care for sick or injured people. Nurses are well respected because they are in a skilled profession and work to remain accident free. Even though nurses are well respected there are stereotyped every day and many people have biased opinions about them. Some of which include being stereotyped as all being women, a profession many call men gay for being involved in, always working in a hospital, will always marry someone that is the medical field, all nurses wear white hospital gowns and a cap, that nursing is easy, are reject doctors, they are all the same, and they do not make a lot of money.
In the society we currently live in today, medical careers are a vital factor regarding the well-being of citizens in the United States. Neonatal nurses make up a very small part of this field, but still play a huge role. Our population depends on neonatal nurses, for the reason that they assist newborns, who were just brought into this world, in becoming stable and healthy. Evidently, in order to become a neonatal nurse, a particular education is required. In addition, with this career comes both a number of benefits and burdens. Overall, in our country, even in the world for that matter, neonatal nurses are needed and the demand for them will continue to grow in the future.
Neonatal nursing is a field of nursing designed especially for both newborns and infants up to 28 days old. The term neonatal comes from neo, "new", and natal, "pertaining to birth or origin”. Neonatal nurses are a vital part of the neonatal care team. These are trained professionals who concentrate on ensuring that the newborn infants under their care are able to survive whatever potential life threatening event they encounter. They treat infants that are born with a variety of life threatening issues that include instances of prematurity, congenital birth defects, surgery related problems, cardiac malformations, severe burns, or acute infection. Neonatal care in hospitals was always done by the nursing staff but it did not officially become a specialized medical field until well into 1960s. This was due to the numerous advancements in both medical care training and related technology that allowed for the improved treatment and survival rate of premature babies. According to the March of Dimes, one of every thirteen babies born in the United States annually suffers from low birth weight. This is a leading cause in 65% of infant deaths. Therefore, nurses play a very important role in providing round the clock care for these infants, those born with birth defects or other life threatening illness. In addition, these nurses also tend to healthy babies while their mothers recover from the birthing process. Prior to the advent of this specialized nursing field at risk newborn infants were mostly cared for by obstetricians and midwives who had limited resources to help them survive (Meeks 3).
Nurses today are the backbone of the medical field. The knowledge that was required to become a nurse in the past would no longer be enough in the medical field today. Nurses in today’s society have a much more extensive knowledge in practicing medicine. Doctors rely heavily on nurses for assistance with many different tasks, such as taking a patient’s blood pressure to assisting during surgery. Although a nurse can qualify to do many different jobs within the medical field, there are some who specialize in a certain area. One area of specialty that many nurses go into is neonatal nursing. A neonatal nurse is a nurse that cares for premature infants. They work in the NICU, which is short for neonatal intensive care unit, within the hospital. To become a neonatal nurse one is required to have the necessary educational background, to be able to work in a hectic environment, and also to be able to have a flexible schedule. Neonatal nursing may not be for everyone, but it is a rewarding profession.
Whichever path one chooses to take, they must have a bachelor 's degree and obtain a nursing license. To get a nursing license in the first place, one must graduate from an approved nursing program plus one must pass the National Council Licensure Examination. Generally students will take classes in anatomy, chemistry, nutrition and a few others while they 're in school (Bureau5). Along with becoming an RN, one would typically land a lower (but still good) job, because the employers know how advancement works. If one were to show that they have experience, work well, and continue to further their education they will generally be promoted up a position with more responsibilities, and sometimes better pay (Bureau 6). Many suggest to further one 's education as new equipment, technology, and illnesses are discovered. Define Nursing Nursing is a knowledge-based profession within the health care sector that focuses on the overall care of individuals. According to The American College of Nurse Practitioners (ACNP), “defines nurse practitioners as registered nurses who have received graduate-level nursing education and clinical training, which enables them to provide a wide range of preventative and acute health care services to individuals of all ages. They deliver high-quality, cost effective care, often performing physical examinations, ordering tests, making diagnoses, and prescribing and managing medication and therapies”. Nurse Practitioners are able to specialize in a particular area, such as family and adult practice, pediatrics, and women’s health; and refer patients to other specialists when necessary. Some nurse practitioners work under the supervision of a physician while others run their own practices.
Everyday in this world, elderly, adults, teens or children become ill or get into accidents and need medical attention. Whether these elderly, adults, teens or children are taken to a hospital, pediatrician, specialist, or clinic, a doctor and a nurse will tend to them. The nurse plays a role that is just as important as the doctor. Nurses work very closely with the families as part of the caring process. Every member of the family plays a role in different ways. The nurses are there to help the patient as well as the family step through the illness or injury. They provide information for the prevention of future illness and injury, and help to comfort the patient and his/her family. It is vital that a nurse understands that to be a nurse, you need a certain personality and understanding of the field.
A Certified nursing assistant is one of the members of the health care team. It is also known as a CNA or Nursing Aide. They refer to the ones they care for as residents or patients. In the medical field, a CNA is the lowest paid, however they are the ones who do all of the work such as physical work. They come in contact with the residents more than anyone else; they are the prime care givers. They are always under the supervision of licensed practical, licensed vocational and registered nurses, known as LPN/LVN or RN. The residents/patients that they deal with need long term care, like nursing homes and caring for them at their home. Since they are long term, staying with a faculty up to several months and even years, many CNA’s create a bond and close relationship with them. The main thing they do for them is produce basic care for them or known to them as activates of daily living or ADL.
