A hero is characterized as any person who is admired for their courage or achievements, thus serving as a model. Some other characteristics associated with a hero are bravery and daring. It is the manner of facing and dealing with anything that is recognized as dangerous, difficult, or painful that further defines a hero.
A primary example of a hero is the courageous men and women, many of whom are employed in a regular non-military job and have spouses and children at home, who are sacrificing their lives while fighting the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. These soldiers are very brave despite the grave circumstances while performing their military service duty.

He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in January of 2008 and continued acting until 2009, when he became too ill. Patrick insisted on always doing his own stunts, and this same courage was waged in his battle with cancer.

In essence, the soldiers, Senator John McCain, and Ted Kennedy all exhibit heroism because they boldly faced danger and pain, and are honored for their courage and achievements. Other heroic attributes are daring and fearlessness depicted by the pilots who crash-landed their plane, the Captain Richard Phillips hostage incident, and Patrick Swayze’s war with cancer. Generally when you think of a hero, who do you envision? Most likely, you picture a strong and imposeing figure, someone capable of performing in high pressure situations, demonstrating bravery and passion to help his/her fellow man. Those who typically fit that role in society are firefighters, policemen, and soldiers. Those people deserve all the credit and recognition they receive for their courageous acts. However, what about individuals or groups who aren’t necessarily on the “frontlines” physically protecting others and saving lives, but who work extremely hard to improve the lives of others in some way? These everyday people deserve credit as well. After all, to the people they help, these volunteers or activists are heroes. An example of such a group is the Greensboro Four, a few African American college students in the early 1960s who helped change the landscape of segregation in the Jim Crow South.

Who is a hero? In contemporary times, usage of the term has become somewhat of a cliché. Over the years, the term “hero” has become representative of a wide variety of individuals, each possessing differing traits. Some of the answers put forth by my colleagues (during our in-class discussion on heroism) as to whom they consider heroes pointed to celebrities, athletes, teachers and family members. Although the occupations differed, each of their heroes bore qualities that my classmates perceived as extraordinary, whether morally or physically. Nonetheless, Webster’s defines “hero” as “a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities.” Thus, it is worth considering that individuals become heroes relative to the situation with which they’re faced.
A hero is someone you look up to, someone who has done something to inspire you, someone who is your role model. In our society, there are many different types of heroes—family, friends, teachers, firefighters, and police officers to name a few. But a hero that stands out to me is a U.S. soldier. What is the definition of a hero? A hero is an ordinary person who finds strength to persevere and endure, in spite of, overwhelming obstacles. In the novel, Lord of the Flies, Ralph, a ordinary 12 year old boy, is elected chief over an island with no adults and no way home. Ralph is considered a hero because he makes difficult choices for the group and overcomes many obstacles , such as keeping the fire going. In the epic poem, The Odyssey, Odysseus, a king of Ithaca, is called to battle in Troy and faces many challenging creatures on his way home such as Cyclops, Calypso, being turned into pigs, and many more. A hero is a man who is distinguished by exceptional courage, nobility. and strength to carry out tasks that involve great risks. A hero can also be a person who fights for other people to help or save them. from their fears and fears. He opposes the villain - a person who does wicked or intentionally harm others in some way, emotionally or otherwise.
“Hero,” what does this mean today? People have many different ways of using this word. The Webster Dictionary definition states, “a mythological or legendary figure often of divine descent endowed with great strength or ability.” I look at the word “Hero” and think bravery, courage, and sacrifice. First, when you see or hear of the growing problem of bullies in the school system, you see a hero stand up now and again. I have seen this with my daughter, who once was bullied, but stood up for herself and for others. As a father, this made me feel proud that you’re raising a leader and not a follower. Secondly, the men and women that not only put their life on the line for our country once, but go back a second time or more. This is courage, not only for the soldiers themselves, but their families. I have many family and friends that have served or still serve in our military. The courage they face overseas is hard, but for most, the courage comes when they return home. Lastly, anyone that puts someone else or someone’s life in front of their own takes sacrifice. Our local, county, and state law enforcement do this every day. We see it on the news, or know someone that has witnessed this. For many they have lived the reality of the sacrifice of a loved one. So when I define the word “Hero,” I say look around, life is full of hero’s, it’s in use all.

My personal definition of a hero is someone who takes a stand against evil or an unjust cause. The term hero can be applied to anyone, it isn’t necessary to save the world from explosion to be a hero. The act of standing up for a friend can also be called a heroic act.
An example, of heroes are all those people who have fought and some who lost their lives on September 11. Many random bystanders helped dozens of people get out during the time of the collapse and still went back in with the firefighters to save many more lives. You also don’t have to kill anyone, conquer foreign land, or risk your life to be a hero. Anyone who influences anyone else by saving or helping save his or her lives is a hero. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. changed the lives of millions of people by bringing justice to minorities. Mahatma Gandhi, one of the greatest heroes, led a nonviolent revolution to free his country.
