School is only for the open minded and strong, the weak cannot survive. You may have learned about math, science, social studies, and language arts but only a handful of students actually learn lifelong lessons to be in a productive society. School holds many things in its classrooms and hallways. Having great teachers and mentors will benefit you in school. Their wisdom and knowledge will contribute to you in ways unimaginable. In High School you tend to limit yourself. There are strict rules you have to follow and a principle you have to listen to. In High School you have a total of eight classes. From early childhood up to adulthood, many people attend school. We spend most of our time in class being lectured and working on different subjects. The point of this is for us to obtain knowledge by learning. Learning, described as a 'biological process' by Robert Leamnson is what a person who pays attention in class will do for much of their life. Colleges are looking for people that are willing to do what it takes to be able to attend their colleges. High school is a little bit tougher and is where there is a lot of illegal drugs. I had a good year in first grade. I became the best artist in the class. I started getting better at English. My first word was “bathroom.” I made two friends Michelle Sherman and Karen Calle. After that I started feeling better and actually liking this school. Everything felt better and worked out great!

For me coming to Rockhurst High School was initially a struggle. Although I was had straight A's before high school, I soon realized that high school could not be compared to middle school. The school district I came from was nonaccredited at the time and did not prepare me to be well equipped in high school. I knew that coming from one of the worst public school districts in Kansas City to going to one of the top private high school schools in Missouri, would not be easy and I was up for the challenge. Starting out freshman year I noticed that my grades were not what I had hoped for them to be and became very worried. When given the quote by Carl Sandburg, "It is necessary ... for a man to go away by himself ... to sit on a rock ... and ask, 'Who am I, where have I been, and where am I going?'." When I think about this quote it reminds me of how college began. When I first became a student at Texas State Technical College, I was studying video game design and development. This was a fun a good learning experience, but the real world came crashing down when I started looking into jobs in this market. There was a lack of available jobs and a large competition for the ones that existed. So after a little thinking about who I am, I realized it would be better to switch degrees and take on something more widely available, Web design and development. This was the start of a new path and the only reason I had to come back and take this class.
In this class, I have learned many things. To narrow it down to three is difficult. I have never been the person to enjoy writing or literature, but I have grown to appreciate it during this semester because of the things that I have learned. During this semester I have learned to appreciate asking for help, that it is okay not to know something and fully understanding something is not just about knowing facts.
There is one person that I can recall that significantly taught me how to read more than anyone else and that person is my aunt, Jennie. Aunt Jennie was a first grade teacher at the time, so it was basically her job to teach kids how to read, and she took on the task of teaching me how to read too. She is an incredibly important figure in my life. She only lives 10 minutes or so away from me, so I would see her all the time, and thus it was fairly convenient for her to come over quickly and teach me after school. I was only 4 when she taught me how to read, and she taught me like I was another student in her first grade class, so I became very advanced for my age. It was extremely helpful for me to learn at an early age and I believe that one should learn as soon as they can, and when I have kids I’m going to teach them early.
Personally, school has helped me find friends, excel in sports, have the normal teenage “hardships,” and has put teacher role models in my life. Believe me, I say I want to drop out many times a week because of the irrational amount of stress from classes, but I also know that it is a part of life most go through. John Holt describes school as a miserable place where there’s absolutely no happiness, or in other words, Hell. When I think about what counts as learning to me, I think about my life. Just being able to live in this world to me is a learning experience, because I feel that my life is full of lessons and I believe that it takes lessons to learn in life. I feel that I have learned to understand learning more and to also understand the value of learning. As I get older I can comprehend subject matters more than I could ever do before. I am learning to be more serious and I find myself not taking life for granted anymore.
At the beginning of one’s journey of gaining more knowledge, most children don’t mind school, for it is a change of environment for them. The majority of elementary school adolescents even enjoy school to some degree. As time wears on, we usually, and sadly, begin to see a change of heart. Children become fatigued from school and therefore don’t take pleasure in going anymore. Maybe their teachers didn’t teach them in the way that they learn most efficiently, or maybe students just become bored with the whole “school scene” itself. Whatever the case, it is apparent that by the time they reach high school, their interest for learning alone has died out.
