Internet-based courses can offer a unique opportunity but do they also offer unique challenges? Every college course whether taken on campus, by traditional distance means or through a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course), challenges the student academically. That is the nature of higher education. Distance study and especially
MOOCs, can make particular demands on students. Recognising these specific difficulties should allow us to identify the characteristics or skills which will aid the student. The major difference between an internet-based course and one presented in a traditional face to face environment is the physical isolation of the student. This isolation has a number of consequences. Firstly, there is less opportunity to get direct feedback to queries. In a lecture or seminar a student will, at least in principle, have the opportunity to seek immediate advice if they do not understand the material presented. In an online learning environment such contact will tend to be through discussion forums. Using such channels requires some confidence in communicating

In Feedback as a gift, Friedrich makes some good points about how to give and receive feedback.
Therefore, all students will quickly learn to read the assigned work before class. At the beginning of every semester, Professor Murphy needs to state that a large portion of the students’ grades will come from discussion participation. She needs to keep a log of students who do respond with healthy (learned information) comments and at the end of the semester, those who did not participate will be graded as such. Due to the fact that Professor Murphy opts to lecture less and discuss more, she needs to take control of who responds and who does
Mrs. Grubbs frequently wanted students to engage in class activities and discussions. However, some students did not participate because they were afraid of giving incorrect answers. For this reason, she decided to create captivating ways for students to
Each student will take a quiz, asking them two questions on the lesson. This will assess whether the objectives were accomplished.
When it comes to writing you definitely need to be self motivated and disciplined, I’ve learned in my life that committed and stable routines often lead to better learning practices. You always need to be open-minded about sharing your life with others online because the relationships you build between your classmates and instructors is a very important part of the online learning experience. I fully believe part of the learning process is sharing your personal experiences through writing and reading. You have to be able to think of your ideas thoroughly and then give your best responses; everyone might not always be correct, but if you’re a great listener you’ll get more out of the lessons you learn through other students lives, and advice from your instructors.
In 1999, Mark Bonner of PricewaterhouseCoopers accurately predicted, “Online learning will rapidly become one of the most cost-effective ways to educate the world’s expanding workforce.” Fifteen years later, his statement is truer than ever, as the price of going to a four-year university skyrockets, and technology required to get the same degree online becomes more available. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, from 2000 to 2010, the average cost for undergraduate tuition, room, and board at public institutions increased over forty percent.
The next phase of the new program and course development process is to examine, research, and design the new proposed course as an online course. Online course delivery options must be explored. A variety of resources need to identified to successfully develop a new online course. These resources may include a variety of publications, possibly even the oversight of a faculty mentor. California State University, Chico provides a detailed site for the development of an online course. In developing the new course in public management as an online course the Chico State rubric was used as a guide that helped with the design of the online delivery system. I have found that use of rubrics in online design is supported by many institutions. The Chico State rubric for online teaching and learning served as the rubric that was used to develop the new online course in public management for Folsom Lake College.
When students are deciding on where to go to college at they have the option of choosing between online classes and the traditional classroom classes. Today some students are finding it much easier to maintain a job, family and start a college career all by taking online classes. Although some students still prefer to stick with the traditional classroom classes, they still have the option to take online classes. Both online and the traditional classes will provide the educational requirements needed to obtain a college degree and opportunities in the work field.
The teacher had noticed a trend in her exam on a particular question that a lot of students had got incorrect. She took out a few minutes at the beginning of class to go over the question. She started out asking the students what they thought the correct answer was and why. She than gave the students the correct answer and then briefly explained why their answers were incorrect. The teacher says she uses this type of assessment to adjust future lectures, so that she knows to spend a little more time on that particular area to make sure student comprehend the
Feedback should be communicated in language that is understandable for the learner, have a genuine purpose, and be significant for the individual needs of each student. Through feedback, teachers can provide the students with suggestions for development, learning strategies, and corrections for errors.
There are some students who find it easier to work in internet classrooms and some others that find it easier to stay with traditional classrooms. I think someone may choose internet classrooms if they have difficulty interacting with teachers and other students. Some people do not like being in the classroom because they do not feel at ease around certain people especially those who treat others with disrespect. It is hard for a student to concentrate and learn a lesson when they have that kind of pressure.
Closed ended questions can be used to quiz if students understanding the basic principles behind the learning outcomes. The use of effective open ended questioning should be used during discussions with students to obtain a deeper level of understanding. Marsh (p. 188 – 189, 2010). Petty mentions how questioning should encourage all students to think. He goes on to say that students should be given time to respond to the question asked and praise if correct answers given. (2009, p. 193). But traditional questioning has its limitations as can be hard to include all of the class. Assertive questioning on the other hand is more active and engaging for the students. It is the pair or group work that that make assertive questioning all inclusive. It shares student knowledge on a topic and helps weaker students to learn by doing. (Petty, 2009, p. 282 - 284).
Abstract: Recently, there has been a rush to create web-based instructional courses. The approach that is being taken to create web-based courses is to create websites that will function as the central distributors of information and materials. Based on the format and content of the course, the student is to go through lesson by lesson to complete courses. In this paper, I address some of the problems inherent in this approach, especially with respect to 18-22 year-old undergraduate education.
"It is an exciting time in education. The Internet offers new opportunities for students and teachers a link to learn in interesting ways" (Ellsworth 1994, p. xxiii). "Telecommunications truly is one of the most exciting educational tools I have encountered in my teaching career" (Watson 1994, p. 41). "The Internet's usefulness is limited only by our level of commitment. We first have to get plugged in before we can get turned on. Then we can help our profession by using our imagination to create a vocational educator's Dream Net in the years to come" (Seguin and Seguin 1995, p. 33).
Is technology helping or hurting people learn? Technology is increasing every day, and is soon going to be a big part of everyday life. The change of teaching students on online class is way different to what they are used to, and will take awhile to get used to. There are disadvantages, advantages, opportunities, and challenges in the technology in education. The role that teachers play now will change in the future when the major demand for the use of technology hits. There is a big change in the way that students are learning with this new online learning. Technology is changing the learning of students in a big way. Some ways are positive, and some are negative but either way there is a big impact on the way students learn. Sometimes it just depends on the student’s way of learning. Those kind of students should have the choice of what they would rather use a book, or a computer. Students need to be able to decide the type of learning that they want to do to help them learn. Students need to know which way it is that they learn the best. Each person has to find out which way they learn the best to better themselves. Find out the best way that they learn so that it can benefit them in life.
