This research project involves experimentation to determine how many electrolytes a drink has compared to other drinks. Electrolytes are minerals such as potassium and sodium that are lost when you exercise and sweat. They break down into little electrically charged particles, known as ions, when dissolved by water. Electrolytes must be present in the human body to perform functions such as muscle contraction, neural activity, and fluid balance (Dolan). Low or high levels of electrolytes can lead to weakened muscles or muscles that contract too much (Nordqvist 2009). It can also lead to dizziness, irregular heartbeat, nausea, and other symptoms. The purpose of this investigation is to find out which type of drink includes, and replenishes, the most electrolytes so these symptoms can be avoided. Today, many different companies claim that their drink is the best electrolyte replenisher. The hypothesis is that if the drink is Gatorade, then it will have the most electrolytes. The experimental controls included the amount of the drink and the temperature of the drink. This topic was chosen because with this information, one would be able to replenish the most electrolytes with the best drink possible.
To investigate which drink contained the most electrolytes and get the best results possible a certain procedure was followed. First, one cup of each drink was poured into separate bowls. Next, the conductance of each substance was measured by putting a straw with two copper wires on each end of it. One copper wire was connected to a battery which was connected to the multimeter. Energy drinks affect your body in ways people don’t think about. My experiment was created to find out what happens to your heart rate after putting an energy drink into your body. Some of the things I found by doing some research is that you can go to the hospital just for drinking an energy drink alone. Energy drinks contain more caffeine than what the label says. Based on this research a hypothesis was created. The hypothesis was, if you drink an energy drink, then your heart rate will increase due to the amount of caffeine it contains. This hypothesis made the most sense because caffeine has been labeled by doctors to not be the safest substance.

In a nutshell electrolytes are substances that are soluble in water and after being completely dissolved, they give ions. Our body consists of Cation and Anion electrolytes which are nutritionally referred to as Macrominerals. As stated before the balance level of electrolytes is every crucial for the human body, and if imbalanced the person can have serious and life threatening issues. But the only way to restore our electrolytes level is by consuming these sports drinks, so this is the main reason as for why even though the sports drinks have some negative aspects to them they are one of the cheapest and easiest ways a person can get the required electrolytes for their body.

For my 6th grade science fair project I chose to find out which drink is better for you and which drink improves performance more, Gatorade or Powerade. I chose this topic because I am an athlete, and it would be nice to know which drink is healthier, along with which drink replenishes better. My group members and myself formed hypotheses to answer these questions. I hypothesized Powerade would be healthier because it has vitamins B-3, B-6, and B-12, while I thought Gatorade would improve performance more because it has more electrolytes, sodium, and potassium. We tested our hypotheses by doing research online and performing experiments.

Caffeine use during sporting events has become much more popular and has widely studied. The purpose of the research was to examine the work increasing (ergogenic) effects of differing regiments of caffeine on metabolism and performance while simulating the typical nutritional preparation an athlete would do for a race. The study also sought to examine the effect of timing of caffeine intake, comparing results when caffeine was given before an event (precaf) to results from caffeine given during an event (durcaf). In addition, the researchers wanted to understand the practice of endurance athletes drinking defizzed Coca-Cola towards the end of a race. It was widely observed that many triathletes and marathoners feel they derive a boost from consuming Coca-Cola in the final stages of an event as a replacement to sports drinks.
Crescent Pure has the opportunity to position their beverage in one of two different markets: energy drink or sports drink. With extensive research, Crescent will need to look at the benefits and drawbacks of each option and decide which market to enter. The struggle with this is that Crescent’s drink has many qualities that can make it go either direction. This drink posses 80 milligrams of caffeine which is on the lower side of the energy drinks. The biggest issue with entering the sports drink market is that is more expensive than the other options. To be successful the correct market needs to be assigned to this drink to have appropriate advertising to the target markets and placement within stores to reach the appropriate consumers. During my research I learned that the body loses electrolytes, sodium, carbohydrates and water during physical exercise (Sports Drinks and Athletic Performance). As a soccer player who runs a great deal during a game, I wanted to know what drink would keep me hydrated and give me energy to perform better. In order to answer this question, I needed to research these subtopics: hydration, what are sports drinks, electrolytes, and the ingredients of Gatorade and water. In addition I had to also research when it is best to drink sports drinks and water. Caffeine is a stimulant drug while alcohol is a depressant, and the two drugs do not cancel the effects of each other, although that idea is often misconstrued by drinkers. Consuming alcoholic energy drinks often leads to decreased perception of intoxication, impaired cognitive functioning, and increased risk for erratic behavior such as drunk driving or engaging in sexual behavior.
