Weapons of World War I and World War II
Have you ever thought about the advances of war technologies between World War I and World War II? There are many big differences including the atomic bomb and the strategies used. Some of the major differences in technology and strategies are infantry, aviation, biological, and naval warfare.
One of the big differences in World War I and World War II is the infantry. In World War I troops in the infantry were outfitted with many things. It cost a total of $156.30 to outfit each troop with everything they would need to survive in France. Some of the main things the infantry would carry would be a springfield or a model 1917 rifle, a bayonet, one hundred cartridges, one steel helmet, one gas mask, one trench tool, one shelter tent, two flannel shirts, two pairs of extra shoe laces, one hat cord, four identification tags, three pairs of summer pantaloons, three pairs of winter pantaloons, three summer undershirts, four winter undershirts, one bed sack, canteen, cup, fork, and knife. (WWI draft Registration by Cheryl E. Belding) In World War II not many things had changed. They were issued many of the same clothing as in World War I. Besides that fact the weapons were more advanced, they still used the Springfield model 1903 but the specialized weapons were more accurate and devastating. A couple of the more devastating weapons were the M1 Garand, rocket launcher bazooka, US M3 grease gun, the Browning automatic rifle, the PIAT, and the Sten gun. In today’s world, the use of airplanes in wars or in everyday life has become a part of how we live as human beings. Removing the air forces of the world is like taking a step back in time when wars were only fought on land or sea. WWI began only eleven short years after the Wright brothers achieved powered flight in 19031 and yet aircrafts were being used for surveillance and eventually combat purposes. It is understood that these aircrafts were primitive, but they laid down the foundation for what we know today as fighter jets. The Fokker Eindecker “revolutionized air combat by successfully employing a synchronized forward -firing machine gun mounted on the engine cowling”2. Because this airplane became the first to successfully use a synchronized machine gun, it allowed its pilots to become the first aerial combat tactitions3.

New advances in technology changed warfare in WW2. The change in technology since WW1 has produced such things as Atom Bomb, and new and improved sea and air warfare. New techniques had to be used because of technology, techniques such as 'mouseholing'. More people were killed because of technology, as more people died in WW2 than WW1.The technological advances in WW2 changed the battlefield completely as more deadly auxiliary was introduced.
World War Warfare was one of the greatest examples of technological advancement and strategic challenge, with the introduction of inventions such as the aircraft and the tank the battlefield transformed from attrition as scene in the early years of the war to decisive by the end of the war.
Some of the inventions that were brought about during World War 1 include the Thomas Splint, Vehicle X-Ray Units, and the Brodie Helmet. Vehicle X-Ray Units were invented by Marie Curie in 1914, in France. These were used near the battlefield to check for any broken limbs on soldiers before they were sent to a hospital. The first war to use significant technological advancement was World War I. Despite the introduction of trench warfare (in which troops dug bases many feet deep into the ground and fought only on the surface), the art of battle would forever be changed. During the American Civil War, which lasted from 1861-1865, over 620,000 accounted soldiers were killed. Known as the "the first modern war", historians generally agree that the reason for this was because this was a time of transition for the military. Armies and Navies were still using tactics where they would gather large forces of firepower to bear on the enemy. At the same time, weapons were being developed which were accurate and lethal well beyond any arms of the earlier conflicts. As a result of these two conditions many more casualties were sustained. Add to that the lack of medical knowledge of disease and infection and the numbers truly began to grow. This paper is an overview of the types of weaponry that was used during this time.
