Introduction
From the 80s in the last Century, there has been some movements promoting “proper Cantonese pronunciation,” or PCP in short, backed by various scholars and media. The idea of “proper pronunciation” comes from pronunciations that are commonly heard in daily usage which are deemed as either wrong or unclear by archaic standards. The wrong pronunciations often refers to mispronunciation such as pronouncing 爍 (soek3) as 礫 (lik1), which largely associates with characters with similar structure. While for unclear pronunciations it refers to “lazy pronunciation“ (懶音) which people mistakenly use or fail to pronounce correctly due to the speed of speech.
Prof. Richard Ho, being the most iconic and enthusiastic campaigner, suggested that we should refer to Guangyun (《廣韻》). For example芥蘭should be pronounced as gaai3 laan4 instead of gaai3 laan2, which is a more common practice among native Cantonese users. Beside academic areas, this standard was also adopted by social media companies such as TVB and ATV in 2000s. Numerous programmes were made and aired promoting PCP by identifying “wrong” pronunciations among the streets of Hong Kong.
Of course, promoting the common pronunciations as “wrong” ones would ensure many controversies and chaos. Since the standard relies only on the outdated Guangyun, many pronunciations in modern Hong Kong did stay the same in the way of how the characters should be pronounced hundreds of year ago. This induced considerable amount of confusion in identifying correct pronunciations for the mass public.
As an inevitable result, the hasted promotion ignited heated debates around PCP. At the former public examination systems (AL/CE), this issue also raises the concern of proper Cantonese pron...

...has not been pay much attention to, rather, grammar, formal wordings and document templates are being taught more. It manifested that the status of Cantonese language is low in schools education. Nevertheless, there are numerous Cantonese users in schools. Therefore, promoting through schools might be a sound method to boost up PCP, as well as its status in Hong Kong education.
The main concern about the promotion would be the support by the government. Since this scheme involves great amount of money and human resources, it is essential that the government would give a helping hand to this issue in order to obtain a remarkable outcome.

English as a communication tool holds prominent position in Chinese curriculum (Liu, 2012). Learning English as a Second Language (ESL) has seen its boost in China (Qiang & Wolff, 2007). Mastering English is an asset for students in job hunting and further education. As academic achievement is highly valued in Chinese culture, students are expected to achieve high marks in English tests (Liu, 2012). University students need to pass National English proficiency examinations, which are the part of the evaluation for obtaining degrees (Wolff, 2010). Students attend after-school English courses for enhancing their English because of the pressure (Liu, 2012). The majority of ELL students aim at improving the international English proficiency tests results, such as International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and Graduate Record Examinations (GRE). ELL students are more motivated in the after-school English courses because of the high-target learning environment. However, the teacher-centred learning procedure neglects the long-term enhancement of students’ English level. The ignorance of the long-term development is due to less student involvement during the teaching procedure (Mo, 2012). Some Chinese ELL students choose to attend ESL courses abroad. The reasons are that they can have a better language environment (Wolff, 2010) and can engage more in the learning procedure (Smith & Hu, 2013). The aim of the study is to compare the teacher-centred teaching in China and student-centred teaching in Canada and to examine efficient teaching methods for Chinese speaking ELL

From the research of the Hmong language, the history, dialects, orthology, and typology are very unique. From the expansion through migration, the acquisition of many dialects, and the variety of the alphabet and tones, the Hmong language has come through great modifications and shifts. Although it is a minority language in Southeast Asia, it still has four million speakers and is considered to not die out anytime soon.
The proper use of pronunciation is what helps a message be understood easily by other fluent English speakers. Often times, an ELL student can struggle with forming a word correctly and may cause a word to be pronounced as a different, but similarly sounding word. One example of how the pronunciation of a word can cause a message to be unclear a Spanish speaker pronouncing “kitchen” as “chicken”. These two words are very close in sound, but each word has a completely different meaning. A mother that asks a child to “please clean the kitchen” greatly differs from the mispronounced word that has changed the sentence to “please clean the chicken”. There are many speech therapy courses that are offered in schools that will improve a child’s ability to speak productively. In the oral language speech by ELL student Tania, the Spanish student faces challenges while pronouncing “stories about magic, vampires “. These impediments can be worked on and improved over time. The grading scale of pronunciation on a rubric can range from insufficient in the result of being virtually unintelligent; to excellent, being that it pleasantly uses intonation and pronunciation as accurately as a native speaker

Besides the misbehaved students and the large classes, all three teachers in the case study by Cheryl Wei-Yu and Cheng Yuh-Show were having difficulties with their accents. (Wei-Yu 10) The students had problem understanding what the teachers were talking and the faculty staff blamed it on them, but the teachers respond that the students are so young so they have difficulty learning the language, because it is a new language, not because of their accent. The only reason the staff reacted like that it is because, Taiwanese schools are more familiar with the American accent. In order to avoid this problem they should not recruit non-American speakers in the program until the students have better comprehension of the language. (Wei-Yu
Some aspects of the Chinese phonological system cause difficulties for English speaker learners. One of the common difficulties is stress and intonation patterns, which are different between Chinese and English. Chinese is a tonal language. It doesn’t only mean that tones make up the Chinese words, but also means that the meaning of the Chinese word determined by the different tones. For American students, they also use stress and intonation patterns similar to tones, even though they did not realize, to express different feeling by variation.
Dialects are one of special culture with many characteristics in China. Throughout approximately 130 local dialects, many Chinese dialects even have longer history than Mandarin itself, so the dialect is an indispensable part of Chinese culture. If China does not try to protect valuable dialects, it would be losing a vital part of Cultural treasures [2]. However, according to LiLan, professor of dialectology, the dialects disappear so fast that beyond the pace of government’s protection [2]. In conclusion, dialect preserving in China is an urgent problem that need the government and people get together to solve.
The spread of English where it used as a foreign and/or a second language may be compromised if it is replaced by another language such as Chinese or Spanish. For example, if China continues to gradually dominate the world economically, politically and technologically, its language could replace English as the major foreign language taught and learnt in various countries’ education systems because they b...
By assuming that students will learn proper communication skills without guidance is a big mistake. Individuals should begin learning basic communication skills at birth and continue learning throughout their educational experience. There are, of course, many types of communication. We use verbal communication, non-verbal communication, written communication and many different forms of. Additionally, communication plays an important role in the process of conveying knowledge as well. Communication is instrumental in education since it helps the instructor and the students to work together with each other. Communication is the most important component of any society. In order, to communicate properly we need correct pronunciation, because pronunciation affects how we understand the meaning of the words. If the sound of a word is different it could lead the listener to believe that the word has a different meaning, and if this happens, it is very obvious that it is a form of improper communication. This may lead to a lot of misinterpretations. To avoid these kinds of problems we need to teach accurate pronunciation. English, in schools, is a very important subject for teaching proper...
