The two TV shows which I have chosen for this topic are The Walking dead and Game of thrones. The Walking Dead: The main protagonist in the film is the deputy Sheriff Rick Grimes who has been shot and when he wakes up he finds himself in a post apocalyptic world in which zombies are everywhere. He gets out on a search for his wife and son and reunites with them later. He finds out that there are many survivors just like him who must fight each other and the zombies in order to survive. It is a TV series and most of the locations shows in this series are out in the environment and everything looks like a ruin. The roads have cracks in them and there are abandoned places. The survivors take refuge in a camp outside the city. There are several burned vehicles and burned vehicles which are shown on the road. The locations and the surroundings definitely complement each other. The places have been made to look as though they are run by zombies. They have been realistic and with a touch of reality. Zombies are seen eating flesh amidst desolated places and dead bodies. The rooms which are presented in a comedy series use vibrant colors so as to bring color to the show. Moreover the rooms used in a comedy series are not realistic and one gets the impression as thought they are human made sets. Example which could be given in this regard is that of Big bang theory. Big Bang theory is a comedy show in which the rooms are shown to be colorful and the characters wear colorful clothes as well. In contrast with the rooms in the comedy series, the rooms in the drama series are more realistic and often use real houses and rooms to shoot their sequences in. Since the dawn of man and women, the issue of gender role has existed. Throughout history the norms of each gender have shifted. The two texts of Beowulf and We Have Always Lived in the Castle, both support a single sex, but are on opposite sides of the spectrum. Beowulf, written in around 800 AD represents the time of men superiority over women, who were the dominant figures in society and their families. On the other hand, We Have Always Lived in the Castle, depicts the contrary, the time of the 1960’s where women’s power grew stronger in contrast to men. In each test the power of each gender is perceived as threatening to the opposite sex, to keep in place, the supremacy of their own gender.
The fictional world of Grendel has great divides between male and female characters. While the novel is written in a fairly contemporary society, the world that Gardner constructs still follows under the same logic and principle as the ancient writings of Beowulf. The men are overtly masculine and tough, and the women are constructed with extreme passivity; there is marginal middle ground in both worlds. The constructions of how certain genders act are crucial to interrogate in order to understand one’s bias and become cognizant of the variety of gender roles men and women can endorse. The world of Grendel is full of symbols that construct men as violent, sexual creatures and women as passive objects.
In what ways are women abused and discriminated against inside literature and throughout history? In many patriarchal societies, men have held authority over women solely due to gender. This power imbalance between men and women sometimes led to unjust treatment of women, and men exert their authority over multiple women in the play, The Crucible. In The Crucible¸ male characters intimidate women to achieve specific outcomes and mark their superiority.
Zombies have become very popular due to their depictions of being easy to kill and being communal. Zombie apocalypses are also very relatable due to the fact that they are set in lives similar to our society and seem easy to overcome. Zombies, themselves, can be identified with because we see ourselves when we look at a zombie. Zombies drudge on through the same task of finding human flesh to consume every day just like we drag ourselves to either class or our job in order to sit through another boring lecture or perform the same menial task every day. Just like the zombie, R, in the book, Warm Bodies, said, “I am Dead, but it’s not so bad. I’ve learned to live with it,” we have learned to succumb to our daily routines and just live with
Game of Thrones is a fantasy piece, set during the medieval times, which takes place in a country called Westeros. Although it is set in a different time and place than where we are today, the show still has the same constructs, and built by the same fabrics that define our gender roles here in America. This show is a great example of gender roles, and what happens when people follow these rules or stray from them. Taking an in depth view of the season one opener, “Winter is Coming” helps reveal many of the social constructs not typically thought of that build our daily lives. This episode also portrays that gender roles are not just dependent on sex, but on social class, and physical characteristics.
...of a man living a solitary lifestyle and suggests to the viewer what it would be like to be the only man living. The special effects used in the film creates the image of somewhat demonic apocalyptic characters. The director chose to use computer-generated imagery in order to make the zombies appear real. The computer-generated imagery allowed the zombies to constantly hyperventilate and appear to be highly infected by the virus.
The Walking Dead graphic novel by Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore portrays Rick’s journey after a zombie apocalypse. Unlike most zombie literature, this novel focuses on the characters, their emotional journeys, and their underlying nature. The extract selected is in the middle of the graphic novel and begins directly after the women are attacked by zombies while washing clothes. The scene opens with an illustration of the camp at night. Shane is guarding the camp, and Rick comes to speak to him. In this extract, the illustrations are important in showing Rick and Shane’s emotions, while their dialogue is important in the advancement of the plot, and sets the scene for a major conflict near the end of graphic novel.
Traditional female characteristics and female unrest are underscored in literary works of the Middle Ages. Although patriarchal views were firmly established back then, traces of female contempt for such beliefs could be found in several popular literary works. Female characters’ opposition to societal norms serves to create humor and wish- fulfillment for female and male audiences to enjoy. “Lanval” by Marie De France and “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” by Geoffrey Chaucer both show subversion of patriarchal attitudes by displaying the women in the text as superior or equal to the men. However, “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” also incorporates conventional societal ideas by including degradation of women and mistreatment of a wife by her husband.
While some fans maintain that ‘Game of Thrones’ is feminist, I doth protest; there is not a single female character who possesses or demonstrates a power that is not mitigated by their gender as females. “Gender may be “chosen” only from within the parameters of culturally available terms which always pre-exist the subject” (Smith 2004).
Lastly, the deceased wife in “An Alpine Idyll” was a prime example of negative treatment of women in this book. She passed away in the winter, therefore her body was not able to be laid to rest until the season came to an end. Instead of respectfully placing his beloved into a pine box to await the end of the season, the husband decided to prop her up against the shed wall. If this was not impudent enough, he then decided to “hang a lantern” from her mouth. From these actions, it is clear to see that this man lacks any kind of respect for his

The Walking Dead, a television show about surviving in the zombie world, is based on the comic book with the same name created by Robert Kirkman. In this show Rick Grimes, a sheriff's deputy, awakes from his coma and finds himself in a hospital. He soon discovers that while he was in a coma the world had become infected, turning humans into flesh-eating zombies later called Walkers by the characters. As Rick sets out to find his family he encounters many other survivors such as Glenn, Daryl, Carl, Maggie, Carol, Sasha, Hershel, Beth, and Michonne, among many others who have died along the way. Rick and the survivors have been through a lot throughout the show, such as having to move from place to place to avoid being eating by walkers. After walking a longs way, they finally find shelter in an old prison where they now live. Although The Walking Dead shows a lot violence, it sends many positive messages to the viewers that teach them about survival, religion and betray and how each of these can be beneficial in the real world
George A. Romero, the director of Night of the Living Dead accidently created the zombie genre that we are familiar with today. Night of the Living Dead reshaped the entire genre with its bitter realism. Romero established verisimilitude unintentionally by focusing on how people react to crisis. The first zombie movies relied on semi-terrifying dress codes (of their time) and the conventional diegetic scream of a female. Whereas Romero’s film is an interpretation of humankind’s collapse. Romero drew inspiration from the infamous Vietnam War spiralling at the time and the American civil war. The verisimilitude lies within the human condition in dire times, like war. Therefore, in the Night of the Living Dead the zombie/ghoul stands as a symbol for the enemy contriving those dire times. Television comedies have been on the air for decades, and throughout this time many different shows have come and gone. Due to the dominance of these shows, comedies are one of the biggest draws on television. There are many different types of comedies, each with their own unique characteristics and features that differentiate them from others and lead to their popularity. Whether the show is a sketch comedy, sitcom, mockumentary or dramatic comedy, each utilizes different types of humour, locations, themes, and situations to appeal to the audience; which is likely why they are so popular today.
