There are many heroes in Homer’s epic poem The Iliad. Most are mortal, some immortal and some are demigods. The classic hero that may come to mind when someone has read this story might be Achilles or Odysseus. However, the greatest hero within the play is Hector. Hector is loyal to his family, the bravest Trojan warrior, and a martyr to his people.
Loyalty to one’s family is not always easy, especially when ones brother brings home a wife that creates a war for two countries for several years. Yet, Hector stoically fights many battles for this loyalty. Speaking to his wife, Andromache, he states, “But my shame before the Trojans and their wives . . . If I hung back from battle like a coward. And my heart won’t let me. I have learned to be one of the best, to fight in Troy’s first ranks, defending my father’s honor and my own” (Homer 129-130). Hector’s allegiance to family is second only to his integrity as a soldier of Troy.
The Trojans had many good warriors, however, Hector was the best, and the most brave. Hector had defeated many Greeks and his newest defeat was Patroclus. Many of his men wanted to retreat at this time, however, brave Hector would not hear of this, stating, “For I will be there. I, for one, am not retreating. Maybe he’ll win, maybe I will. The War God doesn’t care which one he kills.” (Homer 166). In the end, Hector’s bravery led to his demise.
Many perish in war for their country and their people, as does Hector. Hector’s sacrifice was felt deeply by his family and fellow Trojan’s. “And there was not a man or woman left in the city, for an unbearable sorrow had come upon them” (Homer 203). Everyone in Troy felt the loss of this most beloved and revered hero.

The Iliad is an epic written by Homer around 750 BC. It tells the story of the struggles of the 10th year of the Trojan War. Hector, prince of Troy, is one of the main characters in this book and was killed by Achilles. The hero of The Iliad is Hector because although he isn't the most courageous soldier, his respect for others and dedication in battle makes him the hero of The Iliad.
Given his strong familial bonds, it is ironic that Hector’s first real introduction involves him harshly berating his brother, Paris, for his unworthiness on the field of battle. He angrily proclaims that it would have been better had his sibling never been born or had been killed young (3.39-40). Despite this, one must understand that this outburst was likely due to frustration at the long war incited by Paris’ kidnapping of Helen and his subsequent unwillingness to fight in his own war. It is important to note that despite his anger at his brother’s actions, Hektor nevertheless leads the charge against those that would attack his home and family despite seeming to understand that Paris was in the wrong in his actions (3.46-51). Because of his own strong sense of duty, it is likely that he is unable to tolerate the absence of responsibility in others, especially in those related to him, who he most likely feels also have a duty to Troy given their noble positions. Despite his brother’s shortcomings, Hektor feels th...
Throughout time people have looked up to heroes. Hero can be mighty fictional people who save a damsel in distress to just your everyday person who helps out another. Hector, killer of men, led the Trojan army as their greatest warrior. Pat Tillman was a man who left a successful football career behind in order to join the army. However he was later killed in combat with an official story saying that he was shot by an enemy, but it was later revealed that he was killed by friendly fire. In the epic poem The Iliad, Hector is seen as a brave and selfless hero and shares these traits with the modern-day hero Pat Tillman.
At its core, the epic poem, The Iliad of Homer, is a story about a hero’s rage and how it affects the war that is taking place around him. This hero is Achilles and he shapes the epic through both his actions and inactions during the Trojan War. Achilles is the most powerful warrior among the Achaians and this is shown during his battles. In fact, his power becomes so great at times that he abuses it and wreaks havoc unjustly. This is the case with Achilles’s murder and subsequent treatment of the likewise powerful warrior Hector.
In Homer’s Iliad, an extremely courageous and noble character is Hector, Prince of Troy. Hector does not want war, so his decision to lead the assault on the Achaean forces may seem strange. However, if there were a noble way out of the war, Hector might have taken it. “Without a noble escape, Hector is forced to fight”(Willcock 62).

“ My Hector. It is for him I have come to the Greek ships, to get him back from you. I’ve brought a fortune in ransom. Respect the gods, Achilles. Think of your own father, and pity me. I am more pitiable. I have born what no man who has walked this earth has ever yet borne. I have kissed the hand of the man who killed my son” ( Book 2...
When Phoenix, Ajax, and Odysseus visit Achilles to convince him to fight, Achilles show the power of friendship by listening to them and not taking his anger on them. Even though Achilles was angry at Agamemnon, he did not let his wrath get to him when he saw his friends. Even though he denies their offer he still listened to them. Family is another theme relatable to the audience. From Achilles family to Hector’s family, there were are characteristics that shows them importance of family in the passage and in the larger economy. Achilles mother prophesied on his son’s future. He lets him know his future so he can be aware. This displays how family are caring and always looking out for each other. Another example is King Priam, Hector’s father who wept freely informs of Achilles to fight for his son proper burial. This is resembles in Salammbo when Salammbo goes back to Matho to get her veil back even if it is meant putting her life at risk. These events leads to the text, “And so the Trojans buried Hector breaker of horses”. This text emphasizes that the Trojans thankfulness and gratitude to be able to bury their own. Even though Hectors was a skilled fighter, “breaker of horses”, he was not strong enough to with stand the confident and murderous Achilles. This is a very powerful message because it displays a very strong relationship between Hectors and his father that the Trojans were able to bury Hector the
In the “Iliad”, written by Homer, there are two soldiers named Achilles and Hector that have an epic battle. Achilles is the youngest Greek soldier to fight the Trojans, and Hector is the prince and the youngest Trojan fighter. The two soldiers have many different characteristics and similarities.
...battle that Achilles’ ego needed. However, Hector tried to do the right thing by offering the deceased be returned to their respective camps after the battle was over. It is at this point that Achilles is beyond the common courtesies of war and flat out denied Hector’s request. This action by Achilles shows his arrogance and the bloodlust that was truly in his heart rather than the courage that so many people claim that he had.
Hector is the true hero of Homer's Iliad. Although Achilles and Hector are both leaders of men, Hector leads with a mature sense that gives his men reason to respect him. In turn, Hector respects his men which gives fulfillment to both parties. Hector is not a man to sit around and mull over strategies and ideas - Hector is a man of action. His men are inspired to fight because they see their captain fighting as well.
Because he embodied Greek ideals, was ‘immortalized’ through his actions and glorious death, and was courageous, Achilles was an epic hero. Honor was of the utmost importance to both him and the entire Greek society, he chose to die a hero in battle, and he avenged the death of Patroclus even through mourning; Achilles is the true hero of the Iliad.
In the final points, I think Hector has the most to loose in the battlefield at Troy, because he was killed by Achilles in a horrible way, but Hector is win in the spirit mind because he have many people loving him and celebrated for his funeral as a true hero, his name remembered forever as a great warrior of trojan, and his death body was take back from Achilles by helping of the King of Gods, Zeus, who sent Iris come down to help Priam who is Hector father. Hector has a great family relationship, leadership image, and a superior warrior.
Even though The Iliad is a Greek epic poem Homer is really getting at how Hector was a better hero than Achilles or even the Hero of The Iliad. Homer shows Achilles as a selfish, disgraceful warrior that does not care about the lives of his fellow countrymen and even wish for their deaths. Achilles is put in a repulsive light while Hector is seen in a captivating way. He is a family that puts his life down for his family and City. Homer actually made Hector the real hero in The Iliad.
In the poem, Iliad, Achilles and Hector both show relative heroism in their own different ways. Achilles may have been the more popular hero, but Hector had great heroism as well. Each of these characters possess their own different strengths and weaknesses. These two characters both have pride as being one of their main weaknesses. Hector seems as if he would suit best in the modern world, but there are a few different reasons as to why the ancients may have chose Achilles. Hector and Achilles both lost a lot by letting their pride get in the way of their heroism. Both of these characters were their country’s best warrior. Achilles and Hector have very different personalities, and very different ways of approaching situations.
