Honor Killings
Human rights violations against women have, for too long, been denied the attention and concern of international organizations, national governments, traditional human rights groups and the press. Meanwhile, hundreds of millions of girls and women around the world continue to endure debilitating and often fatal human rights abuses. These are only a few instances of abuse which occur every single day all around the world. Human rights violations against women must be documented, publicized and stopped.

India: A 10-year-old girl is rescued by a flight attendant who noticed her crying. Her father has sold her to the 60-year-old man sitting next to her for the equivalent of $240US.

One of the most horrific acts of abuse towards women is known as honor killings. In various countries throughout the world, particularly in the Middle East and parts of South Asia, women who bring dishonor to their families because of sexual indiscretions or even rape are forced to pay a terrible price at the hands of male family members. This brutal act is most commonly found among the Islamic cultures. They use their religion as an excuse for their animalistic, indecent behavior. However, Islam recognizes and celebrates the inherent dignity bestowed by God upon all human beings regardless of race, ethnicity, gender or religion. The Koran, the Muslim holy book, is explicit in its emphasis on the equality of women and men before God.
In the Koran women are repeatedly regarded as inferiors to men. Women are given less rights and privileges in contrast to men. Women are seen as objects to own and control, and not as equals.
Bob Watts does not want to deal with problems since his retirement is coming up soon. Ellis has become feared by managers and recently fired Pat Franklin.
Texting however keeps people at arm’s length and prevents relationships from getting past a certain level of rapport. Text messages help people create distance between them and another person. This distance can lead to many things, like lost friendship. Friendships can be lost in text messages because of tone. I was texting my sister one day, who types in all capital letters, and finally halfway through the conversation I asked her why she was yelling at me, because that is how I was reading them, as me being yelled at. When she responded she was very confused, and told me that she didn’t realize that she had been yelling at me and was sorry. This can happen to anybody. People can confuse tone in text messages, and that can lead to one person arguing with someone who has no idea that they are in a fight. Text messages are also used by people to purposely keep others away from them, and by some it is used to hide. Alice G Walton, a science journalist with a Ph.D. in Biopsychology and Behavioral Neuroscience says, “People like to text because the message gives them the ability to hide,” (Walton). It is like the saying “a drunken mind speaks a sober heart,” When people are drunk they hide behind being it, and use alcohol as their mask, but when they are texting, it’s the phone. They are able to say what they would like, without having to actually face the person they are talking to, and
When choosing to shop online or at a brick and mortar store, start by weighing the pros and cons of each established method of shopping. When shopping online a consumer is are able to browse multiple stores while sitting in their pajamas, no driving from store to store, and there is no need to deal with overcrowded stores. Time is not an issue, browsing online for a pair of shoes might start at three in the morning or five at night. Online shopping brings the global market place directly to a shopper’s front door. Under normal circumstances, the common person would not be able to browse and purchase from stores far away like China.
This is also important in regards to the second strength in his argument. Historically speaking, a theocracy usually is not democratic and will more often than not stop being a theocracy when actual democracy becomes the norm. Perfect examples of this are: the Papal States pre-Italian unification, currently the Islamic Republic of Iran, England pre-glorious revolution, Spain during the reign of Isabel and Ferdinand, Pakistan currently, and the list goes on. These examples make Huntington’s argument more compelling, they show that, almost always, in order for a country to become democratic it must make church and state two separate entities. This is because theocracies usually are ruled in a way that closely resembles a monarchy, those in power are not elected; power is given to them. However, Huntington’s argument has some weaknesses as well. The biggest one being his black and white view of democracy, most importantly his two-turnover test. Here he explains that if a country remains a democracy after two turnovers of power then it is successfully considered a democracy. This is clearly an oversimplification of what being democratic means. By this definition Iraq would
At twenty six years old Rachel Gasston had been accepted into Oxford as she discovered that she was pregnant by her boyfriend who she had an unstable relationship with three months in. “I remember immediately thinking, "I 'm not doing this." I was absolutely sure. That was weird, because I had actually been quite anti-abortion before,” she said. Having a previous experience with a woman who underwent the procedure, she believed that having an abortion was not right, but when faced with the difficult situation her viewpoints on the matter shifted immediately. “I knew one woman who had had an abortion and I had been quite disapproving,” Gasston replied. “As soon as I knew that I was pregnant, though, my only thought was that this had to be over as soon as possible.” Rachel had previously lived in South Africa before she became pregnant, and in South Africa it is illegal to have an abortion. Rachel said,“I am from South Africa and there it is illegal to have an abortion. Even now, when I think about it, all these years later, I am overcome with relief and gratitude that I live in a country where it is my decision - not the state 's - whether I have children or not.” Rachel, if not given the opportunity to make the decision legally, would have taken matters into her own hands. “If I hadn 't had the option of a legal termination, I would have tried to do it myself, and, if that hadn 't worked and hadn 't killed me, I 'm fairly certain I would have killed myself.” Whether abortion is illegal or not women would still view abortion as an option when faced with an unwanted pregnancy. If not done legally by professionals in a safe and clean environment, women seeking to terminate their pregnancies would find a way to do it themselves, possibly causing them to end their own lives. Rachel’s choice was supported legally in a safe environment and keeping abortions
“There are some defendants who have earned the ultimate punishment our society has to offer by committing murder with aggravating circumstances present. I believe life is sacred. It cheapens the life of an innocent murder victim to say that society has no right to keep the murderer from ever killing again. In my view, society has not only the right, but the duty to act in self defense to protect the innocent", argues the ...
The birth of Esports can contribute most of its discovery to its original roots from the 19th century era (Bellis). To understand the next generation of athlete culture, Esports, it is necessary for individuals to understand the beginnings of the newly bred activity. During the 19th century era video games were often overlooked due to its funky nature, however, the introduction of new technology that allowed individuals to manipulate and control objects was appealing to some (Bellis). One of the very first video games to have been developed was a simple graphical computer application used to resemble virtual Tic-Tac-Toe (Bellis). Although the game was simple in nature and basic in control, ...
Broadcasted competitive gaming has been around since the beginning of arcade games when people were competing for the highest score on shows like Starcade back in 1982(Bell). However, in the past couple of years the competitive gaming world has exploded in growth with more games, more tournaments, more players, and bigger cash prizes. During this most recent November there were eight major tournaments for a multitude of games including League of Legends, Call of Duty, and Counter Strike: Global Offensive and some less competitive games such as Battlefield 4, FIFA 14, and Street Fighter. With over a five million people watching these tournaments it is clearly visible that there is a passionate and large group of people that want this competitive gaming scene to expand. With all the activity going on in only a month and with smaller tournaments running all the time it is clear to see that competitive gaming or more formally called eSports has become in such a small time. However, the important question is whether or not eSports should be considered an actual sport like Football, Soccer, or Basketball. According to a ruling by the Olympic Committee, League of Legends already is, and will be taking a place in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro with other games being considered for the 2020 Olympics. Although there are those out that would like to dispute this ruling and say that eSports don’t meet the requirements of a traditional sport. A big argument has been conceived from the committee decision, but not all the arguments being used is valid and then there are those that.
Online and in-store shopping differentiates in various ways. However, they both are convenient ways to shop. Recently, online shopping has been most convenient for me, but I enjoy both ways of shopping. I believe that shopping preferences change depending on a person’s situation. I noticed that many people are starting to prefer online shopping more than in-store shopping.
Talking on the phone requires an immediate response, as opposed to texting. To others, talking with someone is connecting with them on a personal level. For example, when talking to my mother or grandmother I prefer calling them. I don’t see them every day and it always feels so good to hear their voices, which it also allows me to hear and feel their emotions. Texting on the other hand makes it hard to capture their emotions. To me, texting is not as personal; there are no other factors involved on the conversation than what you see on the screen, the text. There is no easy way to feel, or identify the other person’s emotions in a text message clearly; therefore, texting can be a misused form of communication if your objective is to spend hours on the phone to express your
Online shopping allows you to compare prices with other stores and endless sizes and colors are available to you that normally wouldn’t be in stores. The convenience of being able to check multiple stores prices without having to waste gas to drive to multiple stores to find the best price is just one of the many ways shopping online can save you money. We all know children grow at an exponential rate so having to go to the mall multiple times a month is frustrating and tiring. Being able to have someone deliver whatever you desire right to your doorstep is like receiving a gift. Another pro of online shopping is having access to customer reviews. Yes, you may be able to physically hold the item if you were buying it from a store, but by reading the customer reviews you can decide if the product is worth the price. You can even write your own review to inform other people of your opinion of the product. If you don’t like the product, most places allow you to ship it back hassle-free with a full refund or
When comparing two different ways of shopping most people do not even think about, they do both and not even realize it. In today?s society people shop while at work, after work and on the weekends, whenever time permits. Did you ever stop and think how can I get more time in the day for family or just myself? The best way to figure out with all the recourses we have; still most of us go into a store and spend time looking through racks and waiting in endless line to just purchase something. I compared going into a store verses online shopping; to see which on will save you time and money.
1. Convenience: Online shopping provides convenience to the customers as it is available around the clock and is open 24*7. Many people choose to shop online because they could shop after hours, when traditional stores are closed & also they want to avoid traffic jams, crowds, waiting lines etc. Customers not only see products available but also online services that are provided to them. Good service will retain the customers for longer time. Some people want to avoid face to face interaction with the salespersons so they do online shopping. This is true for those people who have had negative experience with salesperson or they just freely want to make decisions by themselves without interruption of the
Young women and children in Liberia have suffered for many years with men sexualy abusing them. Girls as young as 8 years old have been battling it everyday. Sexual abuse and violence has continued to be a huge issue in Liberia. SGBV (sexual gender based violence) is the most significant human rights issue in this country. “There is an estimated 60% to 70% of the population to have suffered in some way from SGBV” (“Aid Workers”). An 8 year old girl was raped by her 20 year old cousin the year the 14 year long civil war ended. The case wasn’t reported until 3 years later. The young girl died due to injuries related to her being raped. Sexual abuse became common around the time Liberia was being torn apart by the civil war. The Liberian government has funded a special court just to hear SGBV cases hoping to eliminate such crimes.
