ASHCAN SCHOOL
The Ashcan School was a movement which was integral and in a way 1 inevitable with the infancy of the twentieth century. This movement in art was brought about by a handful of artists who converged on New York City around the turn of the century.2 The major Ashcan artists who will be discussed later are Robert Henry ( 1865- 1929), George Luks (1866- 1933), Everett Shinn (1876- 1953), George Bellows (1882- 1925), John Sloan (1871- 1951), and William Glackens ( 1870- 1938).3 These were the major members of the Ashcan School. This is a group of artists who are credited with documenting the ordinary life on a human level in New York City during this incredible time of transformation. Because of these artists we have a picture of New York not based on the monuments or buildings but based on the interaction and the coexistence of the people who shaped the society which was emerging.
The island of Manhattan was consolidated into the greater New York City in 1898. Because of this the city was transformed from a nineteenth century seaport with cobblestone streets into a twentieth century metropolis of skyscrapers and subways. The artists of the Ashcan movement saw this changing society in human terms. They saw this in a light which depicted the interaction of so many different cultures which were being thrust together. They documented these changes on a level which the ordinary person could understand. Because of the Ashcan School we have a picture of society which one really cannot understand amidst the overpowering spectacle of overpowering buildings and increasing technology.4
To understand the Ashcan movement it is necessary to look more closely at some of the major artists who were involved. George Bellows moved to New York in 1904 after he dropped out of Ohio State University following his junior year. Once in New York he enrolled in classes at The New York School of Art. He quickly became Robert Henri's star pupil and valued friend. Bellows was fascinated by New York City. He attempted to capture in his art the social change which he noticed in the city. By the time he was twenty four his art had the attention of the cities leading critics, and his work was shown regularly at exhibitions at the national academy of design. Bellows became the youngest artist ever to elected an associate of the National Academy of Design in 1909.
Cyrano is a very intelligent, noble, skillful swordsman who is full of knowledge and creativity to allow him to write his writings. Cyrano shows loving character because he delivers a letter to Roxane every day, of his own feelings and helpful when helping Christian and his struggles with Roxane. Cyrano is also brave and ambitious because he is not afraid of any challenge that awaits him.
In the beginning these two worlds are kept apart until Cyrano devises a way to bridge the two together. He discovers that the woman he loves, Roxanne is in love with a man named Christian. When he tells Christian that Roxanne has feelings for him, he reveals to Cyrano that he may have good looks, but a terrible way with words. Cyrano replies with "strange.... Now it seems I, if I gave my mind to it, I might perhaps make love well."..... "Borrow it then! - Your young manhood - lend me that, and we two make one hero of romance." (p. 84-85)
This is also a way to contrast Christian and Cyrano through the use of deception. Rostand uses this to further Cyrano’s stance as a tragic hero. This is done to contrast the different motives of the two characters. Christian is shown as using deception as a way to fool Roxanne in believing he is something he is not. This shows his vain character and need to appear as a perfect man. Cyrano, however, is shown to have compassion by assisting Christian and putting himself aside to find a way to express his love to Roxanne. Throughout the play, Cyrano de Bergerac, there is a constant theme of internal versus external beauty and the importance it plays in the simplest to the most complex relationships. In the case of Cyrano, his nose affected his relationship with Roxane for she makes him feel unworthy of her love by jumping to the conclusion that those who exhibit unbearable masks are unacceptable and the ill witted are not hidden by faces of gold. The impact that her rash decisions, oblivity, and manner have on the protagonist make her unworthy because one should always feel comfortable and open with the ones they adore. And in the case of Cyrano de Bergerac he did not feel that the mask he bears could be overlooked in her eyes and the love he has could be met.
...ce, possesses admirable traits and characteristics, and has a tragic downfall. He’s strong and intelligent, however with a weakness over his sense of pride. His nose and how seriously he takes himself, makes him a tragic hero. He cannot believe that anybody is able to see beyond his physical characteristics. Cyrano de Bergerac does what he pleases and most actually says whatever is on his mind. He speaks through prideful actions, always thinking of how to make himself stand out or to look intelligent. He never backs down from a fight or a confrontation, and this is often where his pride will continuously persuade his sense. Cyrano only grows in pride, and his temper grows shorter, through the play so the characters don't even say the word 'nose' anywhere near him. Cyrano was a good tragic hero that the audience loves who sadly has tragic flaws that cause his demise.
He pulls off this great look, but once you get t o know him you realize that he is not the most intelligent person. Christian according to Roxane is “proud, brave, and noble.”(II.vi.178) But, Christian says “I’m so stupid, I could die of shame.”(II.x.464) Christian is brave considering he is a part of the army and he does go to war. He is noble in the way that he is willing to give up Roxane for Cyrano since Roxane only loves Christian for his looks. He tells Cyrano to tell Roxane of the plan that they had made because Roxane had told Christian that if he was ugly she would still love him. That meant that she did not just love him for his looks anymore. He is not the brightest considering that he thought he could make Roxane swoon without the help of Cyrano. He tries and fails dramatically, she does not want to talk him so Cyrano has to come to the rescue and fix it all for Christian. Christian is called “handsome”(II.x.464) by Roxane when she is describing him to Cyrano. Also, Cyrano says, “…the boy is handsome, damn him!.” (II.x.459) When he and Christian are alone after Christian was insulting his nose while Cyrano was telling the cadets his story of the fight. Roxane fell for Christian just for his looks, he is handsome and his looks and Roxane’s beauty would go well together if you were just looking at looks. The Cadets were together listening to Cyrano’s fighting story, but every time Cyrano would say something Christian would interrupt and make fun of Cyrano’s nose. Eventually, Cyrano gets annoyed with it and tells all the Cadets to leave but Christian. But, instead of killing Christian he embraces him into a hug and goes on to tell him that he is handsome and basically perfect for Roxane.Christian says that he “loves her so”(I.ii.66) when he is talking to Lingière. Then he goes on to describe what he thinks she is like saying, “I’m sure she is clever, one of those
Cyrano has unknowingly created a sort of psychological trap in which women are kept on the outside and men are free to roam within. Lacking confidence around women, he is forced to pour his heart out on to letters and is deprived of any kind of physical contact with the opposite gender. Without confidence, a man's attempts at any kind of a relationship with a woman are almost always thwarted because in order for a woman to be attracted to a man, she must first see confidence in him. Since Cyrano has no confidence in his ability with women, he is stuck in a never-ending cycle of rejection and loneliness.
Christian De Neuvillette is introduced as an impulsive baron with charming features. Christian can be interpreted as a naïve, and shortsighted character, although within the play, his character bonds between more than just two negative attributes. The most desirable personality traits that a character would acquire are strenuous to preserve. One of these strenuous traits includes courtesy, which readers would target their attention to. The readers’ concentration targets to characters with high qualities that differ from other characters, in this case Christian fits perfectly into the category. After Christian De Neuvillette proves Cyrano De Bergerac that he has fortitude by insulting Cyrano’s extensive nose, Christian hastily apologizes later when Cyrano acknowledged he was the cousin of Roxane. This may be interpreted as an action of remorse, considering Christian did affront the cousin of Roxane; a woman Christian felt adoration towards. The interpretation is partially correct, although stepping into Christian’s point of view, his loyalty focalizes onto Roxane. Christian’s reaction to when he figured Cyrano was Roxane’s cousin, revealed a sudden change in attitude towards Cyrano, creating a much lighter and respectful tone in his speech: “I am so glad to meet you / Believe me...

It was a full 170 years after Americans had their political revolution that they won an aesthetic revolution. American art to get rid of its inhibiting mechanisms- provincialism, over-dependence on European sources, and an indifferent public- and liberate itself into a quality and expressive force equal to, or exceeding that of art produced anywhere within the period. Few would argue that the painting and sculpture that emerged from the so-called New York School in the mid 1940s was the foremost artistic phenomenon of its time and was labeled as the Abstract Expressionist movement. Abstract expressionism was a reaction to social realism, surrealism, and primitive art in the 1940s; this is a turning point in American art history because it caused the rest of the art world to recognize New York as the new center of innovation.
Both Christian and Cyrano love Roxane but Roxane loves only the person that has been writing to her. It was actually Cyrano, who was writing to her but she thinks it was Christian. Cyrano had said, "..And we two make one hero of romance." (II,85) Since Cyrano was suffering with an inferiority complex, as he had a gigantic nose, he was shy to ask Roxane whether she wanted him or not. He had assumed that she would not like him because of his deformity. He one said , "..I adore Beatrice Have I / The look of Dante?" (I,42) What he had not considered was that Roxane loved him for what he was from the inside, not outside. Once she had told Christian that , "If you were less charming - ugly even - I should love you still.
In Cyrano’s words he uses many metaphors, for example Cyrano says, “No! I love Cleopatra--do I look like a Caesar? I adore Berenice--have I the appearance of a Titus?” PG.51, he says that Roxane is Cleopatra and Berenice and that he can never be the Caesar to her Cleopatra and the Titus of her Berenice because of his appearance. Once again the idea of outer appearance comes up as a barrier for Cyrano to get closer to Roxane. Cyrano continuously addresses how his ugliness and Roxane’s beauty do not match up, but he does not understand that Roxane doesn’t see beauty the same way he does, she sees the heart of a person as the most beautiful not the outside. At first Roxane loved Christian for his looks but eventually she conveyed to him how she loved his “soul”, but in reality his “soul” was actually Cyrano the whole time. Another example of Cyrano’s metaphors is, “My heart always timidly hides itself behind my mind.”PG.128, he is expressing how he can never show his true feelings because his mind is telling him
This paper will discuss the many unique aspects of Oakland, California. Divided into five major parts, Oakland is a very diverse city. The five major parts include: Downtown Oakland which is located in the heart of the city, East Oakland which consists of the majority of the city, West Oakland, North Oakland, and the Oakland hills where the terrain is quite different from other parts of the city. While many may perceive the population to mainly consist of African Americans and Whites, there is a significant growing population of Latinos, and Asians. The topics covered in this paper will shed light on the city of Oakland itself, and discuss the unique city that it is. I will also give my personal experience and perception on the city, after living there for 16 years of my life.
