Communication Aspect of technology
Communication is a big barrier that comes between teachers and students with special needs. In a survey done it was shown that in North America 2.5% to 6% of all students in special education classrooms due to severe communication impairments cannot be understood by their teachers or peers. Many of these students also had disabilities decreasing their ability to write. This is a problem not only academically, but socially as well. Students need to be able to communicate with teachers and peers in order to interact, and solve problems. Communication is very important in our world. Without some form of communication, we would not be able to accomplish many goals. We would also have a decreased amount of social skills and development. It is very important for students with special needs to have devices to communicate because some students cannot communicate otherwise. It is important for students to have a strong bond with those around them because of the dependency of some for everyday things. Students also need to be able to communicate with other students whether they have disabilities also or not because of the lack of self-esteem without a broad social arena. Some devices used to communicate are very simple everyday objects that are used at home now that could be incorporated into a classroom if made available. One device is simply computer instant messaging for those with hearing loss. They are able to communicate through writing, and receiving messages from others. This could be used in a classroom with hard of hearing children where a general message is displayed on they screen for all children from the teacher. The children could then each respond to the message. Another way is through the computer-activated speakers where the student would type what they want to say, and the computer says it. All of these devices are good for use in classrooms. Communication is the key to success, and without it, it is very hard to achieve goals.
Academic Aspect of Technology
Many students have a difficult time academically because of disabilities. This can be they can solve some of these problems through the use of devices, and adaptations for devices. A way that these problems are being solved is through different assistive devices such as manual signs or communication boards, voice output computer aids, and computers.
Most people in the U.S. learn STDs in their health class in high school. Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that causes sores over private parts or all over the body in a later stage. Syphilis is caused by a bacteria called spirochete. The spirochete cannot survive outside the body. The only way to get the disease is by intimate contact, but catching it is rare. Having more than one partner could increase the chances to catch the disease. The spirochete enters in a break in your skin genitals area or mouth. Once in your body, about three weeks it becomes a sore or have multiple sores. The sore looks like a crater on the surface of the skin. In the first stage it can be treated easily with antibiotics or penicillin. The second stage the syphilis spreads to the rest of the body. It is visible in your hand and soles on your feet. It can cause cardio-vascular disease, mental problems, paralysis, blindness and tumors. Syphilis has links to HIV/AIDS. It also attacks your nervous system. After infection it takes 21 to develop any symptoms for other people it takes from 10 to ninety days. It acts like no other disease known. The last stage is the deadliest if ignored, by the person. Students with learning disabilities in the regular classroom may have challenges that require special attention. If the teacher is able to identify the disabilities and the features associated with them then the teacher can tailor the lessons to meet the needs of the students. These may include differentiated instruction and facilitating an inclusive classroom which will see inclusive strategies employed that will cater to the needs of students with learning disabilities. These inclusive strategies can range from individualized learning programs to team and co-teaching. In some cases, the teacher can arrange for a special education teacher or arrange for a pull out program to assist students who have learning disabilities. Strategies that will also cater to learning disabilities may also include the use of technology. According to Ford 2013 ‘In some situations it may be best for students with LD to be taught in separate pull out classrooms with a teacher who can provide targeted skill instruction in areas where a student is struggling.’ ‘When provided appropriate support within this setting, many of these students can achieve academically and develop positive self-esteem and social skills. (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association 1991). They also recommend that schools should ‘require in-service programs for all school personnel to give them the knowledge and skills necessary to provide education for students with learning disabilities in the regular education classroom.’ Schools should include activities to help participants learn strategies to meet individual needs of students, foster attitudes conductive to educating students with learning disabilities in the regular education classroom, and promote

A psychologist found that her intelligence is in the gifted range, but she has difficulty in making out written symbols. It is easy to make the assumption that Anna seems merely as a child who is slow intellectually, but when taking a closer look, it shows that she is just as intelligent but happens to suffer from a learning disorder. Students with learning disorders have brain impairments that make it difficult for them to acquire skills and knowledge accurately and fast enough to keep pace with average academic progress (Encarta, 2003, p.1).
