Teaching Status Report


As the final weeks of my experience at Dunn Middle School quickly approached I began to reflect on my experience as a whole. All of my initial opinions have changed since the first time I walked into Dunn. I feel so much differently about Mr. Kiernan, the students, and the school experience in general. The closer to the end it got, the more sense of accomplishment and relief began to overwhelm me. I was so proud that I, for the past few weeks had been a real teacher. Up until the end I didn’t feel like a real teacher I felt like something else, I can’t explain what, but I began to realize that the students really saw me as their teacher. They respected and liked me just as much as Mr. Kiernan, and the best part, they learned just as much from me as the would have if Mr. Kiernan had been standing up in the front of the room. However, I also found myself feeling very relieved. For as much as enjoyed my experience, I was ready for it to be over.

The final weeks of my experience at Dunn were the most eye opening. After talking to Mr. Kiernan over a casual lunch I learned a lot more about him personally and why he does what he does. My opinion on him has changed immensely since the first day. I went from thinking that he was a mean teacher who didn’t really care about the students or what they learned to realizing that he is one of the most caring teachers I have ever met. He loves to teach. That’s the best thing a teacher could do. If you don’t love to teach, then you will not succeed in the field. He cares more about his kids well being then most in that school. He is the baseball coach outside of the classroom and even checks up on the players in the off season. I still may not agree with all of his teaching strategies, but I do think that he is a good teacher. Caring about the well being of the students, I quickly learned, is sometimes more important then what they learn about math inside the classroom here at Dunn.

Mr. Kiernan is a great teacher and I learned so much about classroom management. After working with him, I feel that I can tackle even the most difficult class.

Dealing with the students at Dunn middle school is like being on an emotional roller coaster. I went from feeling apprehensive, to comfortable, frustrated, to successful, happy, to sad. I walked in fearing that the students would not respect me as an adult. I don’t feel like an adult, or a teacher for that matter, but they welcomed me into their classroom and respected me, which was the best compliment they could have given me. The biggest emotional disappointment I experienced was after the last test I gave to my class. I felt like I had worked so hard at teaching them everything they needed to know for the test and they all demonstrated to me that they understood how to do each problem. When I graded the tests and many of them still failed it I felt like it was my fault. I kept asking myself what I did wrong. I talked to Mr. Kiernan about this because I needed some reassurance that it was not that I was a bad teacher. He explained a little background on the students some personal information about individual students and I began to see that it was not me; it was their home life that did not allow them to be school oriented. He assured me that I was going to be a great teacher some day. I felt relieved sorry for the students at the same time. I was happy that some of the students were really grasping the ideas and sad because some of my students led such a horrible life outside of Dunn. Throughout the entire experience my emotions were high.

When I finally walked into Dunn for my last day I didn’t know how to feel. I was somewhat relieved that I could give the rambunctious group of seventh graders back to Mr. Kiernan but I was also sad because I had developed a relationship with my students. The last day was full of difficult questions. Will you be able to come back? Can you stay? One boy even asked me if he could have my telephone number, of course I was flattered but said no I would try to come back and see everyone again but I could not make any promises. I said my goodbyes and received many hugs and assurances from the students that I would be a good teacher. Having the students tell me that I was a good teacher and that I helped them is one of the greatest compliments I have ever received. I walked out of Dunn feeling very proud of myself and definitely with a different opinion on teaching then I walked into Dunn with. I actually feel like a teacher.
