To lack [self-respect] is to be locked within oneself, paradoxically incapable of either love or indifference.....It is the phenomenon sometimes called 'alienation from self.' In it's advanced stage, we no longer answer the telephone, because someone might want something; that we could say no without drowning in self-reproach is an idea alien to this game.
-Joan Didion, "On Self-Respect"
Last Spring, as part of a senior project, I took Tai Chi classes and researched how meditation is used in mind/body medicine. I read several books by doctors who use meditation as a form of healing, in stress-reduction clinics and as treatment for people suffering from severe pain and panic disorders. One doctor in particular, Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn teaches a method he calls mindfulness, in which he has his patients meditate in order to achieve total mind/body awareness. Zinn instructs patients to focus on their pain and to become aware of it. This often helps them realize that they can live with their pain. No pain is too extreme, he says, in the same way that no emotion is a wrong emotion. Awareness is the only absolute, and the only thing that allows people to live in the moment. Not live for the moment, but live in the moment.
I left that project feeling extremely aware and extremely at peace. After three years of struggling to find answers, happiness, and a sense of purpose, I began to appreciate my present state of mind. I began to revel in the struggle, confusion, and push of not knowing. And as I approached graduation, my high school experience suddenly made sense to me. I understood life as a system of games. High school was simply one of them. I came to realize that playing games was both understandable and necessary as long as we are aware that we are playing them. I realized that a major struggle throughout high school had been my struggle to resist playing its game. I spent my three years at boarding school governed by my passions rather than playing by the rules of the institution. And in refusing to play by its rules, I made it increasingly more difficult for me to function within its realm.
By rules, I do not mean the actual do's and don't's, but rather, I am referring to the prompts the school sets up in order to fulfill its goals as an academic institution.
In the poem "Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night," written by Dylan Thomas, emphasizes resistance towards death as he repeats this exhortation in the last line in every stanza. Imagery is used by Thomas to create the theme of his poem and what it means. Although readers are unaware of the details behind the on coming death of Thomas father, the motives of the author for writing this poem are very obvious. Thomas intends to pursuit his father to resist against death and for him to fight for life. Through "Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night," Thomas conveys resistance towards death with images of fury and fighting to symbolize the great anger and rage Thomas feels towards the thought of loosing his dying father, though upon first reading then seem banal.
Most public school in Colombia are underfunded and have very few resources. According to the CIA Fact book education expenditures equal to 4.4% of the GDP. School life expectancy is 13 years and the unemployment rate for your ages between 15- 24 is 21.9 %. These numbers are in direct correlation with the terrorism conflict. The state has to concentrate its spending on military expenditures. This conflict also caused Colombia to become the country with the highest number of Internally Displaced Population. Official, there are 4,175,000 internally displaced people that lost their farms or homes due to the conflict in the rural areas. These people do not receive any assistance and went from being farmers and having a source of income to absolutely nothing. Most move into large cities and live in slumps. President Santos realizes the importance of education assured that “If we want to be free of poverty, if we want to combat it and if we wish to be the most socially unequal continent in the word, worse than Africa, education has to be our primary tool”. Santos believes that this has to be an “American movement. All of the Latin American states have to join together and make education a fundamental objective by creating a regional education
...t. The survey showed that 23% of Americans do not believe global warming is happening. This number has risen by 7% since the spring of 2013 (Prigg 2013). If people don’t come to realize this sooner, the earth could be destroyed. First off, global warming is when the atmosphere traps in gases like carbon dioxide which warms the earth. Global warming is happening all around. Ice caps in Greenland and Antarctica are decreasing in mass and the global sea level has rise by 17 cm in the last century (NASA 2013). If people do not see that it is actually happening, the place that has been called home for millions of years will be destroyed. Global warming is not a situation to be ignorant with. In some situations, ignorance is the better choice; however, there are some situations where being ignorant at the wrong time leads to destruction. It all depends on the situation.
Meditation is an important psychological practice that protects the brain against aging as well as enhancing an individual’s ability to learn new things. This practice achieves this through sharpening focus, lessening stress, lowering blood pressure, and relieving chronic pain. Generally, it helps a person to experience greater calm, connect with deepest feelings, and challenges tendencies of self-judgment. Consequently, meditation leads to open doors for actual and accessible happiness for an individual. According to Salzberg (2011), meditation is basically training an individual’s attention in order to become more aware of inner workings and external incidents (p.7). After becoming more aware of inner workings and external incidents, a person can choose his/her actions towards things that are visible. While each global religion incorporates some kind of thoughtful exercise, meditation in today’s world is usually practiced separately from any belief system.
Thomas uses a great deal of tone and emotion in his literary works, especially this poem that I have researched. His tone is very restricted emotionally which is that he expresses his feelings with an instinctual emotion. Thomas tone is very urgent and possessive when he explains each stage his father has experienced. The poem reads how the writer idolizes his father which defines the magnitude of his love for him. Thomas implies in this poem that life is important; especially how you live it, in that there is no greater feeling than to live life happy, to the fullest and with absolutely no regrets. Thomas identifies every characteristic his father resembles to him in corresponding stanzas. The poem is built to...
In Eastern cultures, meditation has been practiced for over two thousand years. Through this training a culture has developed in which an individual is empowered to engaged in preventative behaviors, which reduce stress and morbidity, resulting in a general state of wellbeing, with stability and mental peace in the face of everyday challenges (Richardson and Lutz, 2008). Over the last half-century, the western-scientific community has begun to evaluate the efficacy of the eastern methods of meditation. In the modern western world there is an over abundance of stress, pressure and over stimulation. These conditions often result in stress-related morbidity, high levels of anxiety and mental illnesses. This cause and effect relationship is well established, and typically emphasis is placed on symptom control and less on preventative behavior modification. There are clinically documented see table 1, meditation practices that can be taught over a short period of time to an individual which have been shown to have positive results. Meditation can be used preventatively in supporting immune function and during illness as a method to aid healing and wellbeing for nominal costs. This paper will make an literary examination of a variety of studies of which examine the role of meditation training in regards to promoting immune function in athletes, recovering cancer patients, in addition to reducing stress and promoting well being in business professionals, cancer patients and seasoned meditation practitioners.
After decades of research, it has demonstrated that “Within the field of psychology, the focus of meditation research has been physiological change and the reduction of medical or psychological symptoms of stress or even both”. [1] Mediations help deal with solving problems and distracting thought...
Though Buddhism has long been a disciplined and strict religion since its’ beginning in the 3rd Century, it has recently gained positive utilitarian use within the psychological and neurological fields of science. Programs dedicated to improving and helping the lives of those who suffer from mental illness have started to incorporate the use of meditation as a form of treatment. Meditation is enforced in many schools of Buddhism as a method, or a way of life, to becoming enlightened. With growing qualitative and quantitative research on meditation, it becomes more evidential of the positive and life changing impact meditation serves in improving overall health of the mentally ill. Additionally, meditation can be implemented as a preventative
When discussing the different aspects of New Criticism in Dylan Thomas’s poem “Do Not Go Gentle into The Good Night”, the impression that comes to mind is death. The use of imagery was a necessity for Dylan Thomas to express the different techniques of writing which involved a mixture of surrealistic and metaphysical tones. His ability to change a words meaning to incorporate symbolism is noticeable in circle of unity from life to death and renewed life.
Western medicine has recently discovered the powerful affects of meditation, by allowing doctors to treat the body and the mind. In reality, the mind is a very misunderstood and unexplored region of the human existence. Modern science knows more about the composition of the earth than it does about the mechanics of the human brain. Yet, meditation thwarts all notions of modern medicine with its shocking ability to to take obscure visualizations and create physical responses in the body. Mahayana Buddhism, found mainly in the autonomous region of Tibet, has become the main reference and standard for meditation practices in the west. Tibetans have used meditation for centuries as treatment for illness, and now, modern medicine of the western world is just beginning to reap the benefits of this unique and unconventional treatment for a variety of physical and mental ailments. Once a practice reserved strictly for Buddhist monks, meditation has become a worldwide phenomenon. Simply enter “Buddhist meditation” into the any Inter...
Education in Colombia is public and free, although there are private schools that offer different language instruction. These schools however can cost quite a bit, and most typical families cannot afford them. The percentage of children that attend school in Colombia is quite high, with a 113% attendance rate for primary schools. In addition, there is a 61% attendance rate for secondary schools. The public school system does differ a little bit from the United States though. For example, supplies such as textbooks are not supplied by the school, or loaned by the school. Families must purchase their own textbooks. This is very different from the United States where there is almost an expectation of basic education materials to be supplied such as textbooks. Colombia has a literacy rate of 91.3% among the general population. Colombia has 5 years of compulsory schooling, and law enforces this. Colombia’s track to higher education requires a state examination to gain entrance into universities, including the University of Antioquia, which was the highest ranked university in Colombia. There is a law in place that ensures that 10% of the nations budget must be spent on education. Primary and secondary schools use uniforms, and the reason for this is so that you cannot identify if someone from a family is rich or poor.
The power of thought is an incredible force that controls our actions and emotions. Often these thoughts can lead to distractions, suffering, and stress. However, many forms of meditation ease and diminish the negative ideas that humans face. Meditation has been practiced since ancient times and has a variety of different approaches and methods, but I will focus on what has helped me the most in my life, Zen meditation. As an individual who battles with anxiety and obsessive-compulsive thoughts daily, conscious-altering methods such as meditation have allowed me to escape my compulsive and frightening thoughts and relax my body
Meditation is a technique that has been practiced for thousands of years by different cultures throughout the world. Meditation is thought to help drive out our negative mental attitudes and feelings that create tension and unnecessary stress in our lives. It is also intended to purify the mind while allowing for a phase of reflection and consciousness of the present time. According to Manosha, meditation if practiced regularly, it helps develop habitual unconscious behaviors that produce positive effects both physically and psychologically (1138). Western societies have adopted meditation in their daily lives to help alleviate stress, improve concentration, memory, and overall physical wellness. Studies have proven that meditation has help diminish frequent visits to the doctor and in turn reduce some unnecessary medical expenses. Stevens describes two stages of meditation, passive and active, along with four different stages of meditation: Pratyahara; Dharana; Dhyana; and Samadi (16-18). A positive aspect of meditation is the ability to neutralize negative thoughts of the daily stresses we encounter from past events in our lives or excessive worry of future events. Meditation involves achieving a state of “thoughtless awareness” according to many practitioners.
Learning about teaching positive and challenging emotions and the applications of mindfulness in the process reveals the power of Mindfulness Meditation in the process of healing, and how important it is for us, facilitators to be aware of this process.
Basic background of this mediation comes from Eastern ideology and originates in a Buddhist practice tradition known as vipassana. The primary aim of mindfulness is for the people suffering from kinds of disorders (chronic low back pain, cancer, psoriasis, insomnia, etc.) to lessen the negative responses as well as to build the ability to recover from the toughness of mental and physical disturbances. The particular progress of mindfulness-based therapy involves meditation exercises, discussion, daily monitoring of sleep and wakeful activity in order to grow the recognition of the attendance of the negative mental and physical states evolved from insomnia and then, to form effective ways of working with those. Since the main goal of this therapy is to apply the recognition of people, the patients are guided to react consciously and positively to sleep disturbances with mindfulness skills, but to react unawares of it as usual (1175-1177). There are several types of formal meditation practice used in order to increase mindfulness such as body scanning or sitting practice, however, yoga happened to be connected to more positive change in measures of mindfulness. Also, Pilates, Taiji quan and Gyrokinesis have been found to have the positive
