Juliet is Independent, Courageous, and Heroic in Romeo and Juliet
After reading William Shakespeares' Romeo and Juliet, you have a
better understanding of the characters then when we are first introduced
to them. Juliet Capulet, who is one of the main characters, is placed in a
cruel and vicious adult world. She is under many pressures and demands of
her family. Thus, during the play Juliet becomes an independent,
courageous, and heroic young woman.
Many times in the play Juliet shows many acts of being independent.
When she was under the pressure to marry Paris, Juliet stood up for what
she thought was right and best for her and refused to marry him. In a lot
of situations Juliet relied on the Nurse to guide her and make decisions
for her. When the Nurse started pushing Juliet towards marring Paris and
cutting down Romeo, she could no longer put trust in her and wanted nothing
to do with her.
Throughout her role in the play Juliet showed allot of courage.
For instance, Juliet decides to marry Romeo even though their families
are enemies. She knows that her parents would never permit the marriage
but lets the love lead her way. When Juliet says to Friar Lawrence "Go
get thee hence, for I wilt not away...."(V.iii.160) Juliet is telling
Friar that you can leave Romeo since he is dead but I will not because I
love him. Her Juliet shows courage because she decides to stay with Romeo
knowing that there is allot at risk is anyone finds her.
Juliet showed many acts of heroism in the play. In order to stay
married with Romeo, Juliet takes a potion that makes her seem dead for two
days . Not knowing if she was going to wake up, Juliet took the chance so
that her and Romeo could possibly be reunited. She did in fact wake up
seconds too late just in time to see Romeo drinking the poison. Without
thinking twice she killed herself, so she could be with Romeo.
Willy also has very poor parenting skills. He has two children Biff and Happy. Willy excuses Biff for a lot of events when he was younger. If Biff stole something, Willy just brushes it off and says that is was no big deal. He didn’t even care when Biff failed math and did not graduate from high school. He measured success in how many people you knew not what your grades are. In one breath Willy would say that Biff is lazy and then in the next say he’s not.

Miller reveals a negative attitude towards Willy’s behavior by displaying Willy’s poor parenting skills. Being a father of Biff and Happy, Willy should teach Biff and Happy with correct moral values. When Biff steals football from the locker room, Willy first told Biff “to return that.”(30) This is the right thing to say to Biff as stealing is illegal. However, Willy then contradicts himself by saying, “Sure, he’s gotta practice with a regulation size ball, doesn’t he? … Coach’ll probably congratulate you on your initiative!”(30) In this incident, Willy teaches Biff wrong moral ethics that stealing is acceptable. Besides stealing, Willy encourages Biff to play football instead studying. When Bernard, Biff’s friend, asks Biff to study, Willy argues that ‘’with scholarships to three universities they’re gonna flunk him?’’(33) As Biff is good at playing football, Willy is confident that Biff is able to get a scholarship and get accepted by the universities easily.
As European domination began, the way in which the European’s chose to deal with the Aborigines was through the policy of segregation. This policy included the establishment of a reserve system. The government reserves were set up to take aboriginals out of their known habitat and culture, while in turn, encouraging them to adapt the European way of life. The two main characters, Romeo and Juliet belong to families, the Capulets and the Montagues, which hated each other for generations. In William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Romeo is "a tragic hero.” This is according to Aristotle’s definition, a tragic hero is a character “who is neither completely good nor completely bad, but also a member of royalty.” Romeo is a tragic hero because he does many good things, but many bad things, as well. For example, he is a Montague and he marries Juliet, who is a Capulet. This is prohibited, so Romeo is bad. However, Romeo does everything he can to keep Juliet happy and risks his life for her, which makes him good. Romeo is also a man of royalty because he is Montague’s son. Romeo’s character has many contradictions, which makes the audience think, “is he good or bad?” Asking these questions and not knowing the answer leads us to believe that Romeo is a tragic hero, according to Aristotle’s definition.
In an attempt to push away from medieval love conventions and her father's authority, Shakespeare's Juliet asserts sovereignty over her sexuality. She removes it from her father's domain and uses it to capture Romeo's love. Critic Mary Bly argues that sexual puns color Juliet's language. These innuendoes were common in Renaissance literature and would have been recognized by an Elizabethan audience. Arguably, Juliet uses sexual terms when speaking to Romeo in order to make him aware of her sexuality. When he comes to her balcony, she asks him, "What satisfaction canst thou have tonight?" (2.1.167). Bly asserts that "satisfaction in her hands, becomes a demure play on the sating of desire" (108). Following this pun, Juliet proposes marriage. She teases Romeo with sexual thoughts and then stipulates that marriage must precede the consummation of their love. Juliet uses "death" in a similar sense. She asks night to "Give me my Romeo, and when I shall die / Take him and cut him out in little stars" (3.2.21-22). Death holds a double meaning in these lines. It connotes both "ceasing to be and erotic ecstasy" (Bly 98). Based upon this double meaning, one can infer that "she sweetly asks 'civil night' to teach her how to lose the game of love she is about to play for her virginity" (Wells 921). She tells her nurse, "I'll to my wedding bed, / And death, not Romeo, take my maidenhead!" (3.2.136-137). Placing death opposite Romeo highlights the irony of the situation; both death and Romeo should claim her maidenhead together. These sexual puns reveal Juliet's awareness of her sexuality. She entices Romeo, forcing her sexuality to act as emotional currency.
In act II, things begin to take flight for Romeo and Juliet. Romeo visits Juliet at her balcony, where the two immediately confess their love for one another. At first Juliet is not blinded by her love. She can see that things are progressing way too fast. She proclaims, "O, swear not by the moon, the inconstant moon, / that monthly changes in her
Juliet visits Friar Laurence for help, and he offers her a drug that will put her into a death-like coma for "two and forty hours".[4] The Friar promises to send a messenger to inform Romeo of the plan, so that he can rejoin her when she awakens. On the night before the wedding, she takes the drug and, when discovered apparently dead, she is laid in the family crypt.
