Critical Evaluation of the Radio
I have chosen the “Radio” brief for several different reasons. The
main reason is because it is of general interest to me, and I knew
that it would be an interesting project to both research and produce a
radio product. When I was given the list of briefs for the research,
the “print” brief wasn’t available to me as I chose to produce a
magazine for my coursework last year.
Before I set out to produce my radio coursework product, I was aware
that there was a mass amount of research that I needed to carry out in
order to know exactly what I was going to produce. I carried out both
primary and secondary research methods. One of my main primary
research methods included carrying out several different
questionnaires with the public. The topics of these different
questionnaires ranged from:
* Likes and dislikes about existing radio stations/programmes
* Interests if a new radio station was to start
* Listening styles for different age groups
I also contacted several different radio presenters from different
stations. I was pleased with the response I got from these, as I
learnt about each individuals background – and how they got into radio
presenting. Whilst using the internet, I discovered many radio “fan”
sites.
Other primary research methods included analysing different radio
stations output, and comparing them to one another. I found this a
very interesting research method as I learnt a lot from breaking down
the content of each radio station. I compared four different radio
stations, two local stations in the same TSA (Transmission Service
Area), and two national radio stations.
My secondary research included reading radio books and internet
websites. I found this to be very useful, as it taught me the insides
and outs of radio. Interesting topics included:
* The renaissance of radio
* Radio Style
* News Output
* Tools of broadcasting
Radio waves were first discovered in 1887, but radio itself was initially invented by Italian Guglielmo Marconi in 1895 (1). His biggest mentioned success was in 1901, when he managed to broadcast the letter “S” across the Atlantic Ocean (1). However, he focused primarily on point-to-point transmissions, not large scale broadcasts from one point (F). As such, three American inventors - Lee De Forest, Edwin Howard Armstrong, and David Sarnoff - took credit for making radio as it is today a success (F). De Forest was born and raised in Alabama and he thought of everything in terms of patents and eventually held more than 300, but many claimed that he simply stole the inventions of others (2). In 1900, he patented a device to enhance weak signals and in 1902, he formed the De Forest Wireless Telegraph Company (1). In the same year. Reginald Fessenden, a Canadian, invented the “electrolytic detector”, which later became the spade detector that brought De Forest so much fame (F). In 1904, John Fleming invented the oscillation valve, which later became De Forest’s audion, and De Forest won the gold medal at the St. Louis World’s Fair for his “spade detector” (F). De Forest gained quite a bit of fame by broadcasting music live from the Eiffel Tower and from the Metropolitan Opera; however, many believed that this was a scam and that he had actually had the device broadcasting the signal only a few blocks away (F). In 1906, he envisioned bringing music and voices to all American households, but as it turns out Canadian inventor Fessenden had already broadcasted a Christmas greeting and music to the crew of a ship off the coast of Canada on Christmas Eve a year earlier (F). All The Light We Cannot See: Radio A spark ignites life within the embodiment of a metal case. As Werner, one of the main characters in the novel “All The Light We Cannot See”, mends the copper conduits a spark pulses through wire, circuitry and antenna. The sparks bend into vitality, crafted outside it’s engineered purpose. The vitality manipulates electromagnetic waves producing sound and thought.
The Robin Hoods of the nineteen thirties were barely even heroic at all. First marked as rebellious people, they showed that even in loss there is still a spark of hope. Then things twisted for the worse, killing machines were made and all hope was lost.
Many authors use the personification of inanimate objects to symbolize the feelings and expressions of their characters. One example of this is in John Cheever’s short story, "The Enormous Radio." Although critics argue that the characteristics of the radio are the opposite of those of Jim and Irene Westcott, the radio actually reflects the couple’s life.
Has anyone ever wondered how radio communications changed society during the 1930’s? According to the research done by the Education Foundation, many people believe that the most important development in the radio at that time was entertainment; this is entirely false. In fact, radio communications not only made an impact in the way people received their news, but also brought together a nation that got out of a brutal depression. Together, the nations as one made radio communications the commanding form of media in the 1930’s. As stations and businesses were beginning to establish themselves, companies from across the nation were taking notice in the department of advertisement. This new realm ignited a spark for the nation’s new economy which later boomed and gave rise to an economically and socially powerful country.
In the short story, "The Enormous Radio," by John Cheever, the radio acts as a wake up call for Jim and Irene Westcott. Even though they believe that their life is better than their neighbors’ lives, the radio proves them wrong. The Westcott’s life can be compared to a freshly painted ten-year-old car: nice and shiny on the outside but falling apart on the inside.
1. The movie, Radio, is based at Hanna High School in Anderson, South Carolina. It is about this young, colored, mentally disabled man that stumbles across his local town’s football teams ball. He picks up the ball, and it catches the eye of the teams coach, who later befriends him. The next day, the coach, Harold Jones, comes to find his players mistreating the man, who they had tied up and put in a school supply shed. This leads to lots of running of the team. Radio becomes a part of the team, which upsets some people, and early on, Radio isn 't treated well.
After the First World War, many people were looking forward to good times. The 1920’s presented people with this time of fast-paced fun and adventure. Entertainment was the foremost part of everyday life during the 1920’s. Radio introduced a whole new practice of entertainment to people’s everyday lives. Likewise, through the utilization of the radio, people were able to experience a new medium to entertain themselves. Furthermore, the radio changed the face of society’s culture through its widespread use. In addition, radios provided people with a new, effective and efficient means of communication. Radio was a fundamental aspect in people’s lives during the 1920’s as it provided many people with news and entertainment in their day-to-day lives.

Many inventions have impacted the world throughout history but in my opinion one of the most impactful one’s was the invention of the radio . This invention provided society with many things which include entertainment, communication, and easier access to information. Radio is still a central part of the society today but just like any other invention radio has an interesting history of how it progressed through time.
During the increase in popularity of radio, Arthur Edwin Kennelly said (1926) "through radio I look forward to a United States of the World. Radio is standardizing the peoples of the Earth, English will become the universal language because it is predominantly the language of the ether. The most important aspect of radio is its sociological influence." Kennelly was foreseeing the potential power and impact that radio would soon come to have. By the late twenties, we would see radio become quite the sensation in the household, and this sensation would continue to prosper even through the Great Depression with aid of soap operas and popular programs such as the Lone Ranger. Radio would see a decrease in popularity during the rise of the television. Eventually, radio would find itself a niche in the media market, allowing it to continue to prosper. This would be due to the help of Frequency Modulation radio broadcasting and localization. Radio stations were now able to offer more local content than radio, touching on local news, weather, and advertisements for local businesses all at a higher sound quality. That joined with a symbiotic relationship with the recording industry and the start of formatted radio programs, the two industries were set to last for almost another fifty years (Adams, n.d.).
“He shoots!!! He scores!!!” these are famous words that Foster Hewitt made famous broadcasting a hockey game on the radio (“The Early Years”). It was words like these that the public became used to because there was no television. The radio served as the first medium to hear things live as they happened. This gave sport fans the opportunity to sit down and tune into a game anytime they like. The radio started off big and then took a dramatic fall due to the introduction of the television. However, radio found new ways to attract the public.
