Designing a New Magazine Aimed at Teenage Boys
I was briefed to design a new magazine aimed at teenage boys, as they
are a notoriously hard group to target. They have a disposable income
and so are very appealing to advertisers combine this with the fact
that they are a seemingly impossible group to widely reach to they are
a golden fleece to advertisers. There are very few magazines aimed
exclusively at the teenage boys age group, as they do not buy general
interest magazines, and are more likely to just buy magazines about
their hobbies like bikes, movies etc. Recently 2 magazines, Nuts and
Zoo, have been launched targeting the teenage boys audience and have
done quite well. I decided to research Nuts before I designed my own
magazine.
Nuts was launched in 2004 and since then has built up quite a large
readership for a weekly magazine. With a circulation of 275,459 and a
readership of 1,174,000 it seems to have effectively targeted the
teenage boy market. It is published by IPC media, who also publish
Loaded, Pick Me Up and Wallpaper magazines. At the time I am writing
this the cover story for Nuts is “Street Strip: real girls get their
kit off”. From this I can see that it uses informal language to talk
to the reader, and foes not patronize of look down on them. It appeals
to the high hormone levels of teenage boys, with soft core pornography
and erotic letters. The layout is BIG titles, lots of pictures and
bright colour’s, a very basic, but effective way of grasping the
reader’s attention. By studying this magazine I decided that my own
magazine should not be highbrow, and should appeal to the inner
caveman of every man or boy.
When I started to create my magazine, the first thing I had to do was
think of a name. I went through several options, but eventually
decided upon BVN, a name which is easy to remember, but isn’t clichéd
like Nugget or Locked. For a cover story I decided to go with an

According to Steinberg (2014) adolescents is a time of growing up, of moving from the immaturity of childhood into the maturity of adulthood, of preparation for the future. It is a period of transitions: biological, psychological, and social. Adolescence can begin as early as ten years of age and not end until the adolescent is in their early twenties. It is important to note that adolescent development occurs at different times for each individual. Therefore, students in the same grade that are around the same age may be going through different developmental stages of adolescents. The purpose of this analysis paper is to discuss the different stages of adolescent development, how they affect the maturity of the students and to determine
“Rape is the only crime in which the victim becomes the accused” Freda Adler. Every 107 seconds a female above the age of 12 is sexually assaulted. Yet consequently only 68% of these heinous crimes are reported. This is becoming a rising problem. Society has trivialized rape so often to the point that it’s actively accepted as a joke. Only 3% of these perpetrators will be incarcerated (RAINN). The excuse, “Boys Will Be Boys” that people are using needs to be obliterated from the courtroom to ensure that more transgressors are imprisoned. If we teach this generation to keep their hands to themselves, communities where our families reside will be safer, the rape culture will decrease significantly and the patriarchy that elusively
I was flipping through some channels on the television set one day and came across a woman's talk show, "The View." It caught my attention when one of the hostesses asked the audience of mostly women to raise their hand if they thought they were truly beautiful. Much to my surprise the audience did not respond with very many show of hands. The hostess then introduced a study done by Dove, the makers of the body soap. Dove polled over 6,000 women from all over the country and only two percent of the women polled said they feel beautiful. Women are surrounded by images screaming physical beauty is more important than their talents and accomplishments. Women are deriving their self worth from an ideal of how they think they should look and how they think everyone else wants them to look instead of focusing on their sense of who they are, what they know, and where they are going in life. In "Help or Hindrance?: Women's Magazines Offer Readers Little But Fear, Failure," Mary Kay Blakely states, "Instead of encouraging women to grow beyond childish myths and adapt to the changes of life, women's magazines have readers running in place, exhausted." She goes on to say, "This is a world we have 'made up' for women, and it is a perilous place to exist." One of the biggest culprits feeding women's insecurities are the popular women's magazine that line the book shelves of grocery stores, gas stations, and waiting rooms. They supply readers and the occasional innocent passerby with unrealistic images of what women should be instead of showing diverse age groups and women with natural beauty. Reading through a couple of magazines, Cosmopolitan, Elle, and Shape, I found nothing but hidden agendas and...

In today’s society, it seems everyone has something to complain about. Some may be an irritable co-worker, a misjudgment in timing, or just a bad cup of coffee. Adolescents, however, are molded by the very environment they live in. Their young impressionable minds are the product of the people they come in contact with, the places they visit, the movies they watch, and the habits they create. All play an important part in their behavior and essentially how their lives will play out in the future. Regardless, growing up comes with its share of stress. Inevitably, an adolescent will face trying times when answers seem to be elusive. If not properly guided, a youth can take a turn for the worse and develop practices that can amplify their adverse situation. This paper will cover some of the most challenging issues that today’s youths come across, its purpose is to inform the reader and better help identify risk factors.
