Christian Teachings About Discrimination and Prejudice
Prejudice is the act of prejudging someone or something, and usually
implies judging another person to be of less worth or value, based on
little or no actual knowledge of them. Discrimination is when people
are treated badly by others because of prejudice. An example of
prejudging is an employer saying, “He won’t do his job well because he
is black”, and an example of discrimination is when an employer says,
“I won’t employ him because he is black”. In Britain today racial
discrimination is against the law but prejudicing is not because an
attitude cannot be made illegal. Prejudice can be about many different
things: religion, race, colour, sex, sexuality, language, disability
and age. All prejudice and discrimination goes against the first two
Articles of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights: article 1:
All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They
are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one
another in a spirit of brotherhood. Article 2: Everyone is entitled to
all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without
distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language,
religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin,
property, birth or other status
Christianity teaches that everyone is equal in the eyes of God and so
it would be wrong to make anyone feel inferior or suffer because of
any difference between them. An example that this is what Christians
believe is “You shall love your neighbour as yourself”, Matthew 29v13.

love everyone, and no where in the bible does it say that Christians

Just how class and gender played a big part in the Bible, that’s the way things tend to work now in modern day. In some cases, people have been punished and even killed for being the wrong gender and/ or race. Most people believe that there is an inverse relationship between education and prejudice which indicates the higher education may increase the tolerance; that would wipe out prejudice. Although education plays such an important role, it is considered as one of various efforts to fight against prejudice and discrimination. In other words, it would be challenging and difficult for education to be alone in the battle of curing the world of prejudice and discrimination.
Two Ways to Reduce Prejudice Two ways in which prejudice can be reduced are Equal status contact and the pursuit of common goals. Deutsch and Collins (1951) carried out an early study of equal status contact. They compared two kinds of housing projects, one of which was thoroughly integrated with blacks and whites who were assigned houses regardless of their race, and the other was segregated. The residents of both housing projects were intensively interviewed and it was found that both casual and neighbourly contact were greater in the integrated housing with less prejudice among whites towards blacks.

As individuals are engaged in their daily activities they internalize learned concepts that can often disfigure the image of a role being performed. Some individuals can be undermined and distorted by the values and performance they choose. The performance they choose to carry can put them in a classification that is below the cultural norm. One term can produce a mass of inimical characteristics fashioned from the past. Ignorant, narrow-minded, immoral, corrupt, sinful, deciteful, and bigoted are identities that are tied to their beilfs; a part of who they are. A part of their identiy that can not be concealed by an means of body modification. Many people know what prejudice and discrimination are, but some of us do not. Prejudice is known as the attitude which includes behavioral, cognitive and affective. This attitude is incorrect and is not justified because it usually deals with negative thoughts of a person. These thoughts can be based on any reasons, for example, it could be because of their social class, race, gender, sexuality, or anything else. Discriminitation on the other hand, is very similar, but involves taking action because of those thoughts. There have been many different types of discrimination, but the main one's are racial, age, and gender discrimination.
“Stereotype” and “stereotyping” are words that are frequently used as synonyms to “prejudice” and “discrimination”; however, according to Lee Jussim and Rachel Rubinstein, social psychologists state that there are distinctions between these three concepts. Stereotype “is the contents of people’s beliefs about groups” and stereotyping is “the process by which people—consciously or not—use their stereotypes to make sense of the world”. Prejudice is defined as evaluation of or attitude toward a specific group; and discrimination is defined as behavior that systematically advantages or disadvantages a group. Prejudice and discrimination have both been prevalent throughout human history. Prejudice deals with the inflexible and irrational attitudes and opinions that are held by others of one group against those of another. Discrimination on the other hand refers to the behaviors directed against another group. Prejudiced individuals have preconceived beliefs about groups of people or cultural practices. There are both positive and negative forms of prejudice, however, the negative form of prejudice leads to discrimination. Individuals that practice discrimination do so to protect opportunities for themselves, by denying access to those whom they believe do not deserve the same treatment as everyone else. An example of discrimination based on prejudice involves the Jews. “Biased sentiments and negative stereotypes of Jews have been a part of Western tradition for centuries and, in fact, have been stronger and more vicious in Europe than in the United States. For nearly two millennia, European Jews have been chastised and persecuted as the “killers of Christ” and stereotyped as materialistic moneylenders and crafty business owners (Healey, p.65). The prejudice against these groups led to the discrimination against them.
If a young girl is walking alone through a park late at night and encounters three senior citizens walking with canes and three teenage boys wearing leather jackets, it is likely that she will feel threatened by the latter and not the former. Why is this so? To start off, we have made a generalization in each case. By stereotyping, we assume that a person or group has certain characteristics. Often, these stereotypical generalizations are not accurate. We are succumbing to prejudice by ?ascribing characteristics about a person based on a stereotype, without knowledge of the total facts?1.

Ethnocentrism is an example of positive prejudice towards one’s in-group. Discrimination can be defined as the negative or positive behaviours towards individuals based on their group association. Discrimination may be obvious or subtle, either way both can be damaging. Although discrimination and prejudice often go hand in hand, there is a difference between the two. Prejudice is just the negative or positive view of others, whereas discrimination is putting prejudice into action. An example of prejudice would be that of ordinary racist remarks whilst an example of discrimination would be the execution of the caste system in India. This question assumes that prejudice is common in this world, and that this problem needs to be solved.
