Pro-Choice vs. Pro-Life
Abortion is unethical and immoral. These are the thoughts of many Americans in our society. If a woman gets pregnant than she should have to deal with her "problem." However there are many circumstances that arise that could make that a difficult and sometimes impossible decision. Instead of every woman that becomes pregnant having no say in whether they have their child, there should be an age limit set. The legal age of a woman having an abortion should be set at 18. It should be illegal for anyone at the age of 18 or over to have an abortion. I believe, for many reasons, it should be the legal right of a woman under the age of 18, a minor, to have an abortion. Minor's account for fewer than one in 10 abortions performed (PPFA , 1999). Furthermore, it should be her right to do so without parental consent.
More and more teenagers are getting pregnant, and they are doing so at younger and younger ages, 17, 16, and 15... The average age a young girl starts her first menstruation cycle is at an all time low of about 12 or 13, (Potts, 1990, as cited in PPFA, 1998-2002) and because four out of five young people have sex as a teenager, (AGI, 1999a, as cited in PPFA, 1998-2002) a greater number of girls are at the risk of becoming pregnant. Eighty-one percent of women aged 20-24 had sexual intercourse before the age of 20 (1, as cited in Gale Group, 2002). 97 out of every 1,000 women aged 15 to 19 find themselves pregnant each year. Out of these 97 teenagers 78 percent are unintended (AGI, 1999a, as cited in PPFA, 1998-2002).
Ideally, a teenager that becomes pregnant should make her mother and/or father aware of her pregnancy. Unfortunately, we do not live in an ideal world. There are some circumstances in which a young girl cannot make her parents aware of her situation. It does not help with the government trying to get involved in the personal lives of teenagers and their families. Congress cannot make families communicate, and it is downright dangerous to try and make them. Most teenagers who do not inform their parents of their pregnancy are victims of physical or sexual abuse within the family, and they feel afraid.
The House of Representatives approved, once again, the Child Custody Protection Act (CCPA).
As to any argument, there are two opposing sides when it comes to the matter of abortions. These two opposers usually refer to themselves as “pro-life” and “pro choice”. Pro-life supporters maintain that abortion is wrong and pro-choice believe that it is a woman’s freedom to choose her pregnancy decisions. When it comes to the topic of abortions, most of us will readily agree that it’s a woman’s choice to decide what her reproductive decisions are, i.e. pro-choice. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is in the question of whether or not abortion is a fundamental right granted to women by the Constitution. Whereas some are convinced that a fetus is considered alive at conception, usually citing the word of God, others maintain that
Abortion is a very controversial and sensitive topic in today’s society. Two different sides to this argument is pro-life and pro-choice. Pro-life proponents believe in the right to life for unborn fetuses saying that abortion should be considered murder regardless of how far along in the pregnancy the woman is. Pro-choice advocates people who believe the woman carrying the fetus should be able to make her own decision on aborting the fetus.
Abortion is the ending of a pregnancy before birth; it causes the termination of the embryo or fetus inside the women. There are two different types of abortion, a spontaneous abortion, which is also known as a miscarriage, and an induced abortion, where the embryo or fetus is purposely removed from the women’s body. The topic of induced abortion has been widely debated for hundreds of years. The issue of abortion was argued way back in the time of the ancient Hebrews. In the United States it became illegal around the mid 1800’s and not until the 1960’s was the argument for the right to abort brought back to the table. In 1973, the Supreme Court case “Roe vs. Wade” made abortion legal. The case stated that abortion was legal in the first trimester (three months) of pregnancy (O’Brien par. 17). Since that day over 30 years ago, there have been many cases in which abortion has been disputed. Congress has passed many laws restricting abortion rights, including in cases such as Webster vs. Reproductive Health Services and Stenberg v. Carhart (O’Brien par. 18). There are many other cases like these and each time is seems more likely that a woman’s right to choose could be overturned (“Reproductive Rights” 26). There are many different ranges of beliefs about the morality of abortion, whether or not one should have an abortion, and under what conditions the termination of pregnancy is acceptable. Many argue at what point in the process of pregnancy a human person comes into existence. People disagree about whether anything from an ovum to a fetus is a form of human life. No person knows this information, but it is debated among the two major sides on this issue. The first side are those that believe abortion should be forb...
Pro life vs. pro choice is a very sensitive subject to argue among a crowd. A large number of advantages and disadvantages leave individuals in an uproar while explaining their stance. Views on religion, myths, and unfit mothers show different arguments to each opposing side. Alternatives to abortion and the future aspects have shown many different pieces about pro life and pro choice. To start, pro life arguments will be stated along with the writer’s opinions. Finally, the writer’s opinions on the subject following pro choice disputes. This provides a clear understanding between the two opposing topics.
Pro choice vs pro life has divided people for numerous reasons. Abortion is expected to date back to the 1800s, it is now seen as taboo and inhumane to some. Fact of the matter, whether abortion is wrong or not it is the fight for giving a woman a natural right to her own body. For decades, legislators that are full of man have created laws and regulations on abortion. Abortion ideally ought to be pro choice for women everywhere for the victims' own protection, expanding young girls life opportunities, and individual freedom.
Pro-choice versus pro-life argues over the issue of what should be the right stance when dealing with the life of an unborn child. From the perspective of a person who is pro-choice, they believe that “individuals have unlimited autonomy with respect to their own reproductive systems, just as long as they don’t violate the independence of others.” Pro-choice also argues that the government should not have the right to decide whether a woman should exterminate her pregnancy or not. From their viewpoint, they believe that what should be legal in the eyes of the government is contraception use, celibacy, abstinence, and abortion for the first two trimesters of pregnancy. On the stance of pro-life, they argue that the government has a right
In present time, abortion continues to be a heated debate with a division of those who are pro-life (against abortion) and those who are pro-choice (in favor of abortion). This forms two opposing groups of individuals who may differ or compare in certain ways. A division of opposing viewpoints happens because individuals construct and define their own realities. Author Jodi O’Brien states “reality may differ across social groups, but within each group, a taken-for-granted system of knowledge establishes boundaries about what is real, true, and right” (O’Brien 2017:7). When studying opposing abortion viewpoints (pro-life and pro-choice), one can see that each side has constructed a unique definition, language, and symbols, which help create
In America abortion is one of the most heavily debated topics in recent years. Pro-life or pro-choice? Many people believe it is immoral and even consider abortion to be murder. The definition of abortion states “The termination of pregnancy by the removal or expulsion from the uterus of a fetus or embryo prior to being capable of normal growth” Did you know that 1 in 3 women in the U.S. will have an abortion in their lifetime? (Baker, Aspen. "A Better Way to Talk about Abortion." Aspen Baker:. N.p., n.d. Web. 25 Aug. 2016.) When first researching this topic I wondered, “What’s the big deal? Why would it matter if someone who was never even born, died?” And I realized that babies that would have been born due to abortion,
An issue that has flared up in today’s society, abortion is a highly debated topic that has sparked some of the most violent discussions. The rapid growth in teenage pregnancy has only increased the amount of attention that has been drawn to abortion and whether it is ethical or not. While some say that a woman is in power of her own body and can make choices based on her best interest, some take much offense to that and demand that a baby is a baby no matter how small it is and that abortion is never okay. It is important to know going into this debate that to argue one side, one would have to be 100% consistent with that decision because of all of the grey areas that come up regarding abortion. With that being said, I still believe that a mother should take responsibility of the situation and recognize that, even though it is minuscule, a baby is a person the moment it begins to develop inside of her.
Have you realized how many teen pregnancies there are in just our generation alone? In 2013 a total of 273,105 babies were born to girls 15-19 years of age, in just the United States. At the age of 15 girls should not even be thinking about having a baby, considering the fact that a 15 year old girl is still considered a child.
The murder of innocents or, a woman’s right to choose; the Pro-Life/ Pro-Choice Debate, Which side are you on? The issue of abortion has been a topic of interest not only in the medical world but also in the political and religious worlds as well. The pro-life argument states that at conception the fetus is a baby and terminating it is taking a life. The pro-choice argument states that the unborn fetus, not baby, is just a blob of tissue and your terminating a pregnancy not a child. Both sides of the argument will be discussed in this essay along with the views of the church, politicians, women who have had abortion, and even a women who use to worked for Planned Parenthood.
Abortion is an issue which separates the American public, especially when it involves the death of children and women. When an abortion occurs, the medical doctor removes the fetus from the pregnant woman. This particular act has separated the public. Many believe that abortion is not morally and ethically correct. On the other hand, some people believe that carrying and delivering the unborn child will hinder the safety of the mother, then an abortion is needed. Each view has its own merit in the debate. This debate has separated the public into two sections: pro-life and pro-choice. A pro-lifer opposes abortion, whereas, a pro-choicer believes that the decision to abort the child should be left to the mother because she is the one carrying the child. In this paper, there will be topics that will be discussed concerning pro-life and pro-choice. I hope at the end of this paper, the reader is able to gain more knowledge concerning each topic. Every woman has the right to control her own body.
Teen pregnancy is an ongoing problem in the United States for many decades. In 2014, 249,078 babies were born to women ages 15-19. This was a 9% drop from the year prior but the United States teen pregnancy rate is significantly higher than other western nations (CDC). While the rate for the country has dropped, not all states have had the same outcome. In 2011, ninety girls at Frasyer High School in Memphis, Tennessee became pregnant. A sixteen year old mother and student at Frayser said “It’s a shame that all these girls at Frayser are pregnant, but ain’t nothing new they need to a class where they teach girls before they get pregnant to use protection” (Sheen, 2014, p. 25). It is a shame that a sixteen-year-old girl looks as if teen pregnancy
Tsai and Wong (2003) acknowledged many risks factors, which is a contributor to teen pregnancy. The influence involves numerous sexual partners, drug abuse, unprotected sex, use of or lack of contraceptives, poor attendance, school performance, and lack of family support, etc. Teen pregnancy is a main issue in every health care system, and affects a young girl’s ...
A. Attention Getter: The amount of teenagers that get pregnant around the age of 15 through 17 is quite concerning. Even though most Teenage Pregnancies are unintentional, it still means that there are chances of them becoming pregnant.
