Veterinary Technologists are like the nurses of the animal world. They are the right hand man or woman to the Veterinarian during routine check-ups and surgeries. They perform the tasks of prepping for surgeries, animal restraining, and preparing samples for testing. These are relatively easy tasks that are being performed, but in certain situations Veterinary Technologists may have to step up to perform more advanced procedures, especially in rural towns. The question is: Why aren’t Veterinary Technologists able to be certified and licensed to perform these procedures?
The profession of a Veterinary Technologist hasn’t actually been around for a long time. The first Veterinary Technologist positions came about in 1908 in England where women were trained to be veterinary assistants at the Canine Nurses Institute where their official title was as a nurse. Fast forwarding to 1960, the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) put in place three different positions of technicians who were certified by hands-on work at research centers. A major milestone aiding in the set-up of the certification program for technician positions was when the first group of technicians graduated from the State University of New York in 1963. This contribution pushed the Council of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, the U.S. Army, Ralston Purina, and the State University of New York to institute programs for training more technicians (Seymour, 2011; Sturtz & Ferry, 2013).
Finally from 1967-1968 and with the push from these organizations, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) decided that there was a need for the technicians and began working to lay out an educational program for training these technicians....

Vet Tech has always been an option for me, helping animals is something that is very interesting. It was introduced in 1989, the AVMA officially adopted the name “Vet Tech.” In 1998, emergency vets debut on Animal Planet. And in 2008, student population grows from 500 to 700. There are about 17,000 people employed in the career field chosen. Some of the common trends of the job would be, working at Zoos, Aquariums, Boarding Kennels, and Wildlife sanctuaries. These jobs are usually found working in an animal clinic or hospitals and sometimes at farms because that is the “normal” areas for this occupation. In this career there are some general duties such as: Observe animals behavior and conditions, Provide nursing care, Bathe animals, Clip nails, groom animals hair, keep animals calm during exams or procedures. The more specific duties of the job would be to: take x-rays of animals and develop them, get utensils and prepare the animals for surgery, keep and record patient's history. Most of the clinics are open 24 hours. There is not anything that is unusual about the number of hours/nature of the job. (Bls.gov.vettech)
Humanity has relied heavily on animals for millennia, for everything from food to transport, companionship and entertainment, and as such animal welfare is a topic that is hugely important to us as a society. My passion for the preservation of animal health coupled with my love of science has set me up perfectly for a career as a veterinary surgeon.
I am extremely interested in pursuing my life career as a veterinary technician because I believe any animal’s welfare and stability is just as important as a human being’s. I absolutely...

Employment for veterinarians is expected to increase by twelve percent by 2022 (“Veterinarians: Career”). As they first start off at a hospital or clinic they make on average forty thousand to sixty thousand depending on what size preference (small or large) animals they work with (“How Much”). Veterinarian 's salary is that high because of their duties; they are to examine the animals’, diagnose and treat the animals, dress wounds, perform surgery, test and vaccinate the animals, operate the machinery needed, give advice to owners, write prescriptions; fill them, and do euthanizations. Working with animals is not the only part of their duties they have to continue to work on being compassionate, their decision-making skills, interpersonal skills, management skills, manual dexterity, and their problem-solving skills. While the veterinarians are working they are trying to improve on the public health by diagnosing, treating, researching on illnesses for all types of animals (“Veterinarians: Career”). As veterinarians give vaccinations and do regular check-ups they prevent some of the complications the animal can acquire. Some vets on their down time perform task like making new medicine by doing scientific research (“Fact Monster”). These jobs that veterinarians do is not all with animals it is also with people
Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2010-11 Edition, “Veterinary Technologists and Technicians” on the Internet at http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos183.htm, 28 Oct. 2011. Web. 09 March. 2012.
According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, it is expected that the job outlook for vet techs will increase much faster than other occupations: by 30 percent between the years of 2012 and 2022. This is because veterinary technologists are beginning to be preferred over basic veterinary assistance for tasks like lab work. [Also, better care and treatment for pets is being practiced by pet owners (Collegegrad.com).] Ve...
A Veterinarian Technician (vet techs) can have a rough life when the job involves saving animals. However the job takes, schooling, commitment, and having passion and love for animals. Being able to work and handle animals is a dream come true; it allows people to see what a pet could do for it’s handler. Maintaining a job that researches certain illnesses and broken bones allows a veterinarian technician to help animals in need. This helps bridge the gap between environment and families all over the world who love animals.
In one way or another, I have been taking care of animals my entire life. Growing up, I was completely dedicated to animals, caring for what could be considered a mini zoo. Naturally, as a child, I was set on a career as a veterinarian. Like most children, I was naive about the veterinary profession, but I had plenty of people to warn me about its challenges. Albeit initially discouraged from becoming a veterinarian, my search for a meaningful career not only revived my spark for veterinary medicine but also gave me the maturity and experience necessary to succeed in it.
“The most successful Veterinary Technicians are passionate about the animals that they see on a daily basis and be able to control their emotions” (Career Cruising). The care of animals is very important so they don’t feel threatened by the Veterinary Technician and claw, bite, or growl at them. Veterinary Technicians must show their love of animals to the patients and their owners. many animals will feel the emotions that people give off and the animal can react to that emotion in a good or in a bad case bad. A Vet Technicians job is to be calm and not show emotions to the patient and family so the family won’t have emotional distress towards the clinic.
For as long as I can remember, my childhood dream has always been wanting to become a veterinarian. While other kids were outside having fun at the playground, I was at the library reading books and learning about the different animals. However, as I matured, I realized that being a veterinarian isn’t just about caring for and assisting injured animals. Being a veterinarian means having the ability to make quick decisions in stressful situations, showing complete dedication and passion to this profession, and being able to effectively communicate to pet owners.
Employment of veterinary assistants that work mainly in clinics is projected to grow 10% until 2022. High occupational turnover will result in good job opportunities. (Summary)
Veterinary and surgical techs may be different in many obvious ways, but there is way they are a lot similarities. They work beside a doctor all day and make sure everything is ready for surgery. Technologist are to know the difference of surgeries, different doctor techniques, and all the different tools. The doctors won’t admit it but, the tech is their right hand girl. Everything is ready for the doctors when they come to perform the surgery and it’s done by the technologist who is on the case of the surgery. Technologist aren’t the ones performing surgery, but they have to know the
During the duration of working at Point Grey Veterinary Hospital, I had acquired many new skills, while improving older ones, and faced a couple of challenges, which in turn, had helped give me a new, more accurate impression of what it is like being a veterinarian. Also, I was surprised to learn that there were numerous things I had learned in school that related to this job, but there are still many more years of education and training required for being a veterinarian. However, my expectations before I had begun my work experience were quite different and while a majority were met, a couple were not.
