From prehistoric times, stamina and strength were key to man's ability to find food and survive. As time went on, other ancient civilizations such as China, Egypt, Greece, and Rome adopted this practice known as phsycal education.

But, the Spartans and the Athenians were the first people to have any type of physical education programs.

Physical Education (abbreviated "PE") is definined as the process of education that develops the human body, specifically fitness and movement skills. PE helps you stay fit, healthy, and flexible. It can also prevent many diseases and lower your risk for getting a certain disease. Exercising can help your coordination and circulation.

"The primary aims of PE are to provide students with knowledge, skills, capacities, values, and enthusiasm to maintain a healthy life" and future.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_education) In all of the states of the United States of America, physical education is offered in grades kindergrten to twelth grade.

PE has started to offer more activities that are newer, such as frisbee golf. Some schools have even started to do you yoga and deep-breathing. Teaching non-traditional things like this to todays youth can also help students learn about different cultures.

Even though PE classes aren't mandatory in all schools, most of them fit it in to their daily schedule. Some times if they don't have these classes, they lose government funding for their school. And some people even debate if it should be required or not. But, with the rising obesity rates in America, and in children, I think that the government should require physical education. The Presidential Fitness Test is a test to measure your fitness levels. Your fitness levels are measured in five different areas. The categories are: curl-ups or partial curl-ups, shuttle run, endurance run/walk, pull-ups or right angle push-ups, and V-sit or sit-and-reach.

Even though everyone may not always like Gym class, it is very important to America's youth. We need to stay healthy and exercising prevents obesity. And preventing obesity, in turn, helps prevent cancer. PE is very beneficial to everyday life.
