Uniform Policies in Schools

Whether or not school uniforms should be required by schools has been debated for quite some time. School uniforms would be vastly helpful to both schools and students. School uniforms would bring students closer together and decrease trend based distractions and bullying. The debate over uniforms in public schools is a much larger issue than simply what children should wear to school. It touches on issues of school and overall grade improvement, freedom of expression, and the "culture wars." Although most students and even some parents would disagree with the idea of uniforms, a uniform policy would definitely make the student body as a whole look more presentable and should be implemented.

Enforcement of school uniforms would create a more respectable environment. Uniforms would make the student body and the school as a whole look more presentable and professional. The policy would put a stop to students wearing baggy or revealing clothing, which could make any school look bad. A reasonable dress code regulation could also dramatically decrease students wearing "gang-related apparel" in turn making schools safer for both students and teachers. Uniforms would reduce trend based distractions therefor affecting behavior in a positive manner. With uniforms, a more professional tone is set in school. This encourages students to take their studies more seriously. School uniforms are also becoming more and more common. Since the mid-1990s, dress codes at U.S. schools have become increasingly common. As of 2006, roughly one in five of the nation's schools has a dress-code or uniform policy in place, the highest percentage in recent decades.
