Two of Us: Cloning

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if you had twin or even if you had a clone? If you had an illness like diabetes, have you ever wondered what it would be like if you did not? Cloning is the creation of an organism that is an exact genetic copy of another. The first successful clone was in 1997 when scientist Edinburgh cloned Dolly the sheep. She was the first animal to be cloned with an adult somatic cell by using the process of nuclear transfer. She was born on July 5 1996, lived to the age of six and died after being diagnosed with lung disease called Jaagsiekte. (First Cloned Sheep Dolly Dies at 6 page 1).

This is a common disease in sheep caused by retrovirus (First Cloned Sheep Dolly Dies at 6 page 1). There were many unsuccessful clones before this, like the tadpole in 1952, goats, cows, mice, pigs, cats, rabbits and a gaur. Dolly was created by reproductive cloning and was one success out of 276 tries. (Human Genome Project Information page 1, 3). In her lifetime she produced a total of six lambs. Her first lamb was Bonnie and she was born in April, 1998. The next year she produced twins Sally and Rosie and then produced triplets Lucy, Darcy and Cotton a year after the twins. At the age of five, Dolly developed arthritis and began to walk stiffly. This was successfully treated with Anti-Inflammatory drugs. (Dolly the sheep page 2).

Even though cloning should be illegal, cloning should be legal, at least therapeutic cloning. Because if people had a clone they could get more things done faster by their self. And some people who do not have a twin wished they did.

Cloning works in different ways. There are a few steps in the cloning process. The technique used in cloning is called nuclear transfer. It is called...
