The job of a pharmacist has changed greatly over time. Instead of mixing and bottling pills all day, a pharmacist now works with patients daily to help them get healthier while giving them medicine that they may need. Training after college is needed, similar to most jobs in healthcare such as dentistry and nursing.The schooling needed for pharmacy is rigorous but rewarding, as the six to eight year process challenges students, but builds their knowledge of science, math, and patient care so that they can succeed in the field. Some of the top schools in the country are located in the Pennsylvania area, such as the Universities of Pittsburgh and Duquesne, while some are located on the west coast of the United States. Before even going to college, though, hard work and affinity in high school science and math classes is very important.. Many consumers do not really understand what a pharmacist truly does nowadays, though.
To begin, an average day for a pharmacist is very high paced. Efficiency and synergy in the workplace is crucial for a pharmacist, whose main jobs are to supervise pharmacy technicians (techs) and provide information to patients about the medicine they will receive. Pharmacists also check medical histories, which explain allergies and conflicts with other drugs in patients (“Pharmacist”). If a patient takes a drug that they are allergic to, then the consequences can range from prolonged sickness to death. Pharmacists must make sure that no drugs will be harmful to patients. The pharmacy technician who receives no formal training is responsible for not just the delivery of a patient’s medication, but also for their bill, their confidential information, and their life. The question now is, how can an uneducated individual be given so much responsibility? Technicians are granted these responsibilities because a pharmacist can not do the job alone. Pharmacists strive to mold each new technician into an employee that will realize what technicians really do. Pharmacists and technicians provide patients with safe and accurate medication in a timely manner. This is not a task for pharmacists or technicians alone; it is task that requires both personnel in order to be accomplished.
Pharmacy technicians typically learn through on-the-job training, or they may complete a postsecondary education program. Most states regulate pharmacy technicians, which is a process that may require passing an exam or completing a formal education or training program. These programs are usually offered by vocational schools or community colleges. Most programs award a certificate after 1 year or less, although some programs last longer and lead to an associate’s degree. Technicians also learn the names, uses, and doses of medications. Most programs also include clinical experience opportunities, in which students gain hands-on experience in a pharmacy.
In order to become a pharmacy technician, you should take math, chemistry, and biology courses in high school. Not only do they provide information to patients about side effects, but also they inform physicians of the ever-changing selection of drugs and dosage. Weighing, measuring, mixing drugs, finding the identity and purity, and strength of medications is also an important part of the job. Pharmacists must be sure not to dispense drugs that will have a negative reaction to the other medications that the patient may already be taking. Pharmacists work in clean, well-lighted, and well-ventilated areas. They work with dangerous materials and sterile pharmaceutical products, which require them to wear gloves and masks. Since my early schooling days, science and mathematics have always fascinated me given that all components of the world are explained on the basis of these disciplines. In this regard, Pharmacy which is based on Chemistry and Mathematics has interested me a great deal as it has direct impacts on our daily lives. The more I have become familiar with the chemistry and mathematics knowledge involved in pharmacy, the more I have appreciated its significance in improving the lives of people in the community. Out of the many careers that one would opt to pursue, Pharmacy has stood out as the career that will enable me serve the society more directly and have a real impact in the quality of peoples’ lives by touching their health. In addition, I love a career that is challenging and one that I will be involved in even in old age. In this case, Pharmacy offers me this opportunity. My interest in Pharmacy has also developed from my personal health experiences and becoming aware of its expansiveness. Every time I have had to take medicine to cure an illness, I have become more interested to know how drugs are made and how the drug components work in the human body to alleviate pain and restore health. As a pharmacist you must be able to effectively communicate with your patients in order to care for them. This includes being experienced in the following skills of nonverbal communication and effective listening. In the beginning they must have skills in reading comprehension, active listening, critical thinking and speaking. The education and training to become a pharmacists requires 2 to 3 year of undergraduate and for the D. Pharm. program is 4 years. In their last year of study they must practice under a licensed pharmacist (like an internship) graduate from and accredited college and pass the pharmacy knowledge exam known as the Pharmacy College Admissions Test (PCAT). Although they have an option after completion for D.Pharm, several colleges offer an award Ph.D. degrees. Ph.
