Thinking Critically, Challenging Cultural Myths

According to Gary Colombo “Beginning college can be disconcerting experience.” (Gary Colombo, p. 1). Colombo also writes about how it might be stressful for students being it’s their first time away from home and has to deal with the stress from the real world and having independence. Colombo also explains that students will have to use their brains when thinking Critically and thinking outside the box. Colombo mentions that “Culture shapes the way we think; it tells us what “makes sense” “(Colombo, p. 3).

Colombo explains that “Beginning college can be disconcerting experience” (Colombo, p.1). That there will be more peer pressure from your peers and an increase expectations that you have never faced during your high school days. “In the dorms you may find yourself among people whose backgrounds make them seem foreign and unapproachable” (Colombo, p.1). Colombo also states “If you commute, you may be struggling against a feeling of isolation that you’ve never faced before” (Colombo, p. 1).

Colombo also asks in his article “Thinking Critical, Challenging Cultural Myths” “What do instructors mean when they tell you to think critically?” (Colombo, p. 2). In this paragraph Colombo is wanted to let the student know that the college instructors are going to let the student use her own mind and think outside the box. That being “a critical thinker cultivates the ability to imagine and see the different value points of her own- Then strengthens, refines, enlarges, or reshapes her ideas in light of those other perspectives” (Colombo, p. 2). Colombo also states that being “a critical thinker is an active learner, someone with the ability to shape, not merely absorb, knowledge” (Colombo, p. 2).

Colombo thinks “Beginning College can be disconcerting experience” (Colombo, p. 1) that instructors want you to think critically, that instructors want you to think outside the box, Colombo also states “Culture shapes the way we think; it tells us what “makes sense” (Colombo, p. 3). I also agree with Colombo statement that “Cultural Myths can have more subtle effects as well” (Colombo, p. 4). Hopefully you will agree with some of these statements, but keep your minds open and free.
