Theoretical Studies Essay
Theoretical Studies is a wide array of academic courses, which employ the customary techniques of lecture, discussion, written examinations and research papers, which are designed to lead the students in the subjects of mathematics, and the social and natural sciences. The Boricua College’s educational model is in the interaction between the intellectual and affective skills, developed in the courses, and the subject matter contents of the theoretical studies courses. On my first learning experience with the theoretical studies, I was introduced to a depth study of the concepts and theories of the psychological and sociological aspects of linguistics.

From these theoretical perspectives, I would advocate and provide a teaching curriculum that has a framework that facilitates the success of English Language Learners in all classrooms, even the mainstream. The commitments in practice should be based on the premise that learners are apprenticed into academic communities, both real and imagined. Children develop their own capacity of understanding and speaking the language that surrounds them. Educators have looked at factors that can enhance the development of language in children and how it contributes to success in school. Language researchers suggested that children develop the ability of understanding and creating language because language is essential for social interaction. However, we, as educators, also need to put attention to children who have hearing or speech problems as well. These children have been able to demonstrate that they are also able to develop the ability to use and create visual signals as a form of sign language. Children increase their language database on a daily basis and develop their mastery of language skills. Many countries have used developed theories in referring to grammar and the rules of their native language. We also have our own educational goals imposed by the cities and states we live. Therefore, as a future teacher, I need to develop appropriate curriculums that can be implemented to English Language Learners. Throughout this semester I have written several essays and journals using techniques both important and unfamiliar to me. This class helped me use these techniques and steps that are involved in creating and formalizing an essay. The writing process of an essay includes information gathering, creating ideas, and writing it on paper to create a cohesive and organized paper. In complete certainty I can say I lack many of the skills necessary to create such a paper, but during this course I have learned some writing methods which I believe have improved my essays. The essays and journals in this portfolio reveal both my strengths and weaknesses in my writing and how I have both continued to make the same errors and improved in other areas.
Up until this year, before taking the class intermediate composition, I thought I was a terrible writer. I was right. Writing isn’t something that I enjoy doing, nor am I good at. Writing is difficult for me because I’m not very good at explaining things in a professional manner, that can be easily well written. While writing you are expected to make little to no mistakes, which is not something I’m great at. I am so much better at explaining things with verbal words rather than written words. I had not taken any extra writing classes before this year rather than the mandatory ones. Like I had stated before, I hate writing, with a passion. Technology is very beneficial to children in school because it makes education more entertaining, allows kids to learn outside of school, and provides low-cost alternatives to poor families that are just as good as going to school.
Before I started this class I never knew what sociology was. I thought I knew, but I actually didn’t. I thought it was some boring study about the society that we live in, but I was proven wrong by this course. Through many different concepts taught I have been able to understand what sociology really is, and how to apply it to my daily life. There were many topics that we talked about in class that I can apply to my life be it school, work, home. Some of the many topics we talked about that really spoke to me were sexuality, race, and gender.
To begin with, before anyone can develop an opinion as to whether technology is a useful tool in the classroom, one needs to understand that technology plays an important role in today’s world. However, the use or over-use of technology in educating young children in teaching literacy to young children is a much debated theory. There are many opinions regarding the positive influence technology can have as a useful tool in the classroom, yet there are those, like myself, who also see the negative aspect of too much technology.

It is difficult to escape the influence of technology on modern life. It lurks behind every door: the classroom, home, office, and store. There are many who are resistant to new technology, saying that technology causes harm to society. These claims are often made without the realization that technology also includes important and indispensable parts in their life such as writing and the tools for writing. Writing was one of the first technologies invented. Technology has now become so entrenched in the majority of cultures around the world that it is hard to imagine a life or society without writing. For those that maintain a majority of technology beyond writing is harmful, imagine the difficulty in writing without the help of other technologies, which includes pencils, paper, computers, printing presses, and a number of other technological aids.
“Computers play a key role in almost every sphere of life” (Berry, Terrie). Without them, everything would be different. People all around the world own or used a computer. Whether you are a professional in technology or just an average person, computers are still very important in your everyday life. “No other technology has accessed the world like computers and the use of the Internet have” (Maddox, Amanda). Without computers, consumers would not be able to do half the things as quickly as we can. Advances in computer design have increased its use for different industries, especially in the medical field.
Sociolinguists such as Eckert (2000) and Milroy (2004) have made provocative efforts to incorporate linguistic-anthropological concepts into sociolinguistic explanation (Woolard, 2008) and foundational studies by Creese (2008) include major works describing the paradigm. Rampton (2007), described the methodological tenants behind LE. LE research is yet a developing discipline that serves as a way of enriching a fundamentally linguistic project. In fact, the formulation of LE covers a large and older body of scholarship on language and culture (Rampton, Maybin, & Roberts, 2014), while simultaneously necessitating and interdisciplinary collaboration of theories and skills, thus blurring the boundaries between branches of variationist, sociological and ethnographic sociolinguistics (Tusting & Maybin, 2007). LE research on language change (Ekert, 2000) and a cultural model of cognition (Levinson, 1996) are worthwhile examples. Ultimately, to this day I still do not fully understand what my worldview is. All throughout my life I have struggled with my relationship with God, as I find it very hard for me to believe in something I have no empirical evidence for. Perhaps one could compare me to Freud in his early years, continually searching for empirical truths for ideas that have no true empirical results besides faith. However, in recent years I truly have felt my worldview change from that of complete atheism to perhaps one of some spirituality, as I have begun to find comfort in religion and God due to experiences I have had at De Smet in retreats and in classes. Computers can also capture and hold a child’s interest like no other learning tool. Consider, for example, NASA’s recent Mars landing and exploration. It is now possible for an elementary classroom to log on and follow events like these as they unfold - they are witnessing and experiencing a national event as it is occurring. There is no doubt that without technology, an event such as this would not be nearly as interesting or appealing as say, following it in the newspaper.
My definition of religion has mostly stayed the same, but my perception of it has changed. At the beginning of the class, I assumed religion was something you believed based on your moral principles. I now believe that those moral principles are based on the religion that you believe in. Your religion changes your perception of the world and how to go about in it. Your religion tells you what is right and wrong in the world and answers all of the big questions one asks. Religion according to our book is, “A pattern of beliefs and practices that expresses and enacts what a community regards as sacred and/or ultimate about life” (Van Voorst 6). During my time at this field placement, I noticed how Mrs. Anderson uses technology on a daily basis and wanted to give it a try myself. Students seem to enjoy it very much and from what I have seen, Mrs. Anderson gets a great response from the students as far as scores go. Technology in the classroom can be used for different types of assessments as well whether it be for a presentation, test or online activity. As a 21st century pre-service teacher, it is very important for me to know how to properly use technology in the classroom and how to successfully incorporate it into my curriculum. “Teachers must learn to use technology and must allow it to change their present teaching paradigm. This is not an easy task because change can seem intimidating and threatening” (Bitner, 1). As a college student who would like to become a teacher, I believe that technology will help a child. All children learn differently, and technology is to help the children who have no other place to go. Some children are just unable to learn from a teacher, that is when technology plays a big role. Some children have to show themselves how to do things and technology will allow that.
From classroom activities to space flight and everything in between, computers are a vital part of daily life. Everything we do and every aspect of our life is affected by modern technology, like the computers. Computers let us dissect any sort of data. Computers make us reflect, hence we develop.
