In the movie Dead Poets Society, Robin Williams's character as Mr. Keating the English teacher is a hero. "Carpe Diem, lads! Seize the day! Make your lives drastically. Keating's viewpoints and thoughts on life stayed the same throughout the movie no matter what conflict was occurring. The students that Keating taught were the ones who
changed. They became more independent in their thinking and discovered what they wanted out of life. The change in these students is what caused the main conflict of the movie.
The conflict arose in Dead Poets Society as Keating's philosophies about life were challenged. Keating's fellow teachers at the conservative Welton Academy did not agree with his non-conformist method of teaching. Keating's peers believed that the students were not emotionally equipped to incorporate into their own lives the kind of freedom and nonconformism that Keating was selling. These teachers do not want the students to be free thinkers, only stuffed with facts and forced ideas to become doctors and lawyers.

Throughout the text Keating connects with people on a personal level through his word choice and tone. This connection with his audience allows him to further develop belonging, and evoke a greater emotional response in his audience. This word choice and tone can be seen in the lines, “We took the traditional lands and smashed the traditional way of life. We brought the diseases. The alcohol. We committed the murders. We practiced discrimination and exclusion. It was our ignorance and our prejudice.”
Keating, and now by The Headmaster, Mr. Nolan. Nolan brings back reference to the introductory essay by “Dr. J. Evans Pritchard Ph. D”. When this passage is being read, a symbol of the banking concept returning to the classroom, the students who were members of the dead poets society stand up in rebellion of Mr. Nolan, and his oppression. This scene shows both education methods present throughout the film and described by Friere. Consider McMurphy and Mr. Keating, both characters are very similar in a multitude of ways. Neither of them is in charge as they are both under their respective antagonist, either being Nurse Ratched or Principle Nolan. However throughout the progression of each plot, they both teach and inspire either the patients or the students to become individuals. McMurphy gave the patients the ability to seize back the power from Nurse Ratched through showing them the way how, and teaching the patients that they are their own person and have their own rights. Mr. Keating teaches the students how to be outside the box, as shown when in class he strays from the regular methods of teaching and shows the students a truly out-of-the-box concept about life, “Carpe Diem.” Towards the final moments of the plot, both characters achieve a full commitment to their cause that eventuates in self-sacrifice. McMurphy is lobotomized and Mr. Keating is fired from Welton Academy. However similarly in both plots, after both characters sacrifices themselves they pass on what they have learned and allowed others to beat their struggle for independence. Chief leaves the institution and the students stand up against Principle Nolan with what they believe in. Weir and Kesey use these characters to inspire and support those who struggle for independence and use their characterization as a technique to do so.

Neil’s father wants him to become a doctor, but Neils wants to be an actor. He doesn’t stick up for himself and say what he wants, so he commits suicide. Keating gets blamed for this because he told him to do the play, which is what causes his father to be mad at him. Keating tells Neil to not conform to his father’s wishes because it isn’t what he wants. Since, Keating did this he gets fired. This relates to what Emerson writes, “For nonconformity the world whips you with its displeasure” Keating did not let conformity get the best of Neil, but the Headmaster doesn’t agree with this. Keating loses his job because of how he wanted Neil to ignore his father and do what he wished. Even though Keating tells Neil to do this, he does not speak his mind about being fired. He conforms to the fact that he lost his job, even though he should not have. Although, he is still following what he thinks because he says, “There is a time for daring and there is a time for caution. And a wise man understands which is called for”. Keating does not speak up because he knows that there is no reason to fight it. The headmaster will not listen to his thoughts because he does not agree with them. So, Keating just accepts this and moves on. Inside, he still believes them, but knows that society will not agree. This relates to what Emerson writes, “Ah so you shall be misunderstood. Is it so bad then to be misunderstood?” The headmaster does not understand that Neil’s life was affected positively by Keating’s lessons. The culture the boys in Dead Poets’ Society grow up in is rife with claustrophobic norms and expectations. One gets the sense that the boys have learned helplessness with regard to their ability to think for themselves and be independent. Though they possess the ability to have initiative and independent will, their society has molded them into thinking they have the freewill of an infant. This learned thought process is only broken with the introduction of a new English teacher, Mr. Keating, who instills the romantic ideals of freedom, individuality, and creativity. It is only through Mr. Keating’s introduction that the boys are able to break through their intellectual chains and think for themselves. Despite Mr. Keating’s help, some of the boys are more inclined than others to take up his world view.

Keating has a very unique, hands on approach. He likes to make the lessons engaging and get the boys involved in one way or another. In this, they can then form a personal connection with the lesson, which will make it stick out amongst all their other monotonous classroom lessons. It makes the students willing to learn, and it gets them excited to learn.
