Role models have an astounding effect on the lives of young people in our society. A role model has the ability to shape the views, ideals, and actions of a young person. Role models help youth to discover how they wish to become in the future. The influence that role models have over young people is tremendous. It is important for role models to be positive and responsible in instilling good morals and values because future generations are directly dependent on the role models of today. By examining the influence of role models, role models in the community, and role models in the media, we will be able to determine the true effect that role models have on the lives of youth.
Community role models are people that youngsters interact with on a daily basis. They are our parents, coaches, or mentors. These are people that young people encounter frequently, who are, in part, responsible for the young person’s perceptions of the world. It is important for community role models to set good examples for youth. The judgments that young people make are often helped to be formed by the e...
The problem with children copying role models is that many young boys, for numerous reasons are left without sound, solid male role models who can show them how good men can be (Robinson 2011). This however is not always the case, although there are some boys who do lack models in the home they can take role models from men they see in the media, ch...
During our adolescent years, we learn many life lessons by many role models such as our parents, teachers, and characters in movies and from books. However, many books today lack the suitable characters that troubled teenagers can idolise when in desperate need.
“Magic Modeling” will discuss the importance of being a steadfast role model for your teens. Teenagers typically become slightly rebellious as they get older. They begin to question your rules and decisions as a parent. Your teen doesn’t see you as the perfect, unblemished person that they might have before, and your actions become scrutinized.
But what does it mean to be a “Role Model”? How can I be role model some might ask? By the true definition in the English Language a role model is a person looked to by others as an example to be imitated.
Whether or not adults can see it, they are the major influences in the lives of children. Although children do look up to media and sports figures, it is those that have direct interaction, and time spent with those they love and look up to on a daily basis that they truly learn from and mold themselves around based on the adult influences in their lives. That being said this makes parents, and family members the true heroes in their lives. Parents want their children to develop family values, and to be kind, caring and courteous, which are not always attributes that the media, and sports figures possess, (Holub, Tisak, & Mullins, 2008) Many studies have been developed to determine who children tend to idolize most, and describe as their heroes, and most children associate the word hero with someone they know personally, and not someone in the media. Anderson, and Cavallaro state, "70 percent of the African American and 64 percent of the White children chose people they knew as heroes. In contrast, only 35 percent of the Asian American kids and 49 percent of the Latino kids named people they knew." (2002) These numbers are huge, and show that adults are truly major influences in who children view as heroes. As a society, everyone needs to realize the impact that is made by the choices that are...

Kivel and Klieber (2000) posit that the media is a very important source of information for LGBT youth, as they discover what it means to be LGBT and also discern potential role models. Moreover, Boon and Lamore (2001) conducted a survey on 79 students (after an initial screening) and found that participants reported their beliefs, ideals and traits had been affected by their celebrity role models. Therefore, if young LGBT people possessed a sporting role model, they may positively affect their sporting beliefs and ideals and increase the likelihood of participating in sport. However, the researchers only studied students who had medium or higher attraction to their role models. The strength of attraction to a role model may not solely determine the effect of the role model on the person and those who indicated a lower attraction level to their role models could have still been influenced by them. The current study will include students with diverse levels of interest in sport and may or may not have role models, with the purpose of gaining (more accurate data) on the influence of role models on sport
A good role model sets the path for others to follow, by being outstanding in all they do. Naturally, people learn by observing, more than by listening. This enables people learn what they can observe easily as compared to what they hear. When a leader becomes a role model, there is a likelihood they will comprehend better what the people being led go through, hence the leader will impose practical expectations on the followers (Charles 9).

Athlets have been lookd up to as role models for as long as sports have exsted. There is just something attractive about the thought of being in good physical condition and being talented in sports. But, are athlets the kind of people that children should be looking up to for direction and guidance? Many children often look up to the professional athletes as role models. In fact, in 1995 Sports Illustrated for Kids did a survey for kids who were ages 7 through 12 about who their role model was. The majority of the kids answered that a professional athlete was who they most looked up to. Only four percent of the children answered that their role model was one of thir parents. Because of today?s media, athletes are constantly in the public eye. Everything they do on and off of the playing field. Some professional athletes speak a positive message through their fame by demonstrating constructive ideas such as teamwork and commitment while they are on the field. Even off of the playing field some athletes set a good example by visiting children in schools, going to hospitals, or even setting up foundations and organizations to help the ill and less fortunate people. However, other athletes are not as considerate to the fact that someone may be looking up to them, some athletes are not concerned about anything other than the sport they are getting paid to play and themselves. These athletes are the ones that propose questions over whether athletes should be considered role models or not. A role model can be defined as a person whose behavior, example or success is or can be emulated by others, especially young people. Who would want their child looking up to someone who has been convicted of domestic violence or has a drug addiction? It is an argument of opinion that cannot be settled.
Role models can make a huge difference in a child's life. My Physical Education teacher had a major impact of effecting of what I want to be now. Aleta Jo Crotty helped me to learn to take responsibility for my actions, and in my choices I am in control. By using guidelines that was set by her for my life, I hope to reach just one child.
A young girl is standing with a gun ready to fire. Her best friend Will walks toward her, another gun outstretched. She pleads for him to snap out of it. But, Will can't hear her, he's being controlled. She shoots, letting the bullet fly through his head. She flees the area crying to herself. Thankfully, this isn't real. This is a scene from the book Divergent, by Veronica Roth. This is one of the new popular book series from the Young Adult Literature genre. Young women are looking up to such heroines like Tris, described above. We know because the Hunger Games series alone has sold more than 65 million copies. These heroines are presented as strong willed, persistent, and smart role models for young women around the world. In fact I am going to argue that Young Adult Heroine Literature is the most influential source of entertainment for young women today. I will argue this by showing that our literary heroines make smart, influential decisions, they don’t care about their outward appearance like some many women do, and they have changed our world in a few simple days. Also, our world has been influenced by heroines. Adults, writers, and young women alike have many different ways in which Heroines have impacted our life all throughout history.
Many people find someone in his/her life to look up to, a role model. There are many different kinds of role models; they can be singers, public speakers, a parent, or even a friend. Role models also are not determined by certain criteria. A role model can be a role model just because they are a leader or have a great talent. Oprah Winfrey is considered a role model to many individuals because of her tough childhood, wonderful charity work, her schools, and the true relationships with her fans. Oprah stands out among many people on her ability to feel others’ pain and help those people get through their troubling times.
With celebrities all over the media, it is expected that some are idolized by their fans, especially the youths. There nothing wrong with people making celebrities their role models. Celebrity role models can be a positive influence by changing people’s lives and way of thinking for the better. On the other hand, when impressionable kids and teens see their celebrity role models do something that is not morally sound, they will come to think that it is acceptable making it more likely for them to do it. This raises the question: should celebrities be role models? For the most part no. Role models are people that are admired by others for their accomplishments and not their status; however, many celebrities
Parents, who worry about the child’s future, attempt to set good morality on their child. Of course, as good parents, they want to educate their children to always choose the right decision.”Role models are highly important for us psychologically, helping to guide us through life during our development, to make important decisions that affect the outcome of our lives, and to help us find happiness in later life”(Thomas). Thomas advises people on how important role modeling is and how it can help adolescents find happiness in later life. “First, the use of role modeling as a teaching method in secondary education is assessed. Second, adolescents role models and their moral qualities are identified”(Sanderse). Sanderse implies that the moral qualities are identified as well as their role models. Morality may change due to the beliefs and culture, but the morality is set mainly by an adolescent's role
