The Battle of Formats
There are two new formats of DVD's coming out one is Blu-ray and one is HD-DVD,
will this become the battle of VHS vs. BetaMax and which will be in your home.
First, let me give you some history on both of these new forms of DVD's. Blue-ray which was invented by a group of companies called Blue-ray Disc Association. It consists of companies like Sony, Apple, Dell, HP, and many more. Blue-ray will hold 25 gigabytes and will be the same size and shape of a DVD. The only difference is that it uses a different laser which is the color blue. Now you know why they called it this. The big factor that will push Blue-ray to be in your home is that Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios, and Warner Bros will be big supporters of Blue-ray. Another big feature is that it will feature DRM which is digital rights management. Blue-ray has another form of encryption called BD+ that will allow the companies to change the encryption. This will make it very hard to make copies of their products like movies and software.
HD-DVD was introduced on the DVD forum and on November 19, 2003 they decided that the HD-DVD format be the new DVD to output HD movies. HD DVD was originally called Advanced Optical Disc. Like Blue-ray it is the same size as Cd's and DVD's. HD-DVD's will only hold 15 gigabytes, 10 less than Blue-ray. HD-DVD uses a red laser to burn information and read information. This product is supported by Toshiba, NEC, Sanyo, Microsoft, HP, and Intel. Now the type of copy right protection that HD-DVD is some what like Blue-ray. They will have a Watermark Protection. Additional Exercise
One of my writing problems was trying to not explain the hard ware but to explain the problem with the separate patents and what the problem was. The way I had to fix this was research more on who owned what and who supports them. I am a technology geek so it easier for me to talk about how things work than to get into the business of things. This topic is a big one for me and I think it will mean more and more to people. A lot of people of new clue of this technology but yet it will be forced into there homes sooner or later.
The average Blockbuster store carries roughly 1,500 movie titles. Netflix carries more than 12,000 titles. It has movies that you can't find anywhere else. Next, if this kind of rating took place then it could become universal and more socially excepted than every country with it’s own system for rating. Imagine, you can go to other countries (Europe perhaps) and watch movies made in English there. This might send some sort of bond between countries in rivalry. If the rating system is more universal then DVD players won’t need to have region block outs. This would enable people to buy a regular DVD player and watch movies from other countries. Plus, this would save the manufacturer money by not having to put more money into a region block out chip. This would also help out people buying DVD players by having them become cheaper. If we could watch movies from other countries, that would encourage us to expand our horizon on movies from other countries.
Another feature that is a first in the console industry is Xbox’s internal 8-Gigabyte (Gb) Hard-Drive or Hard Disk Drive (Hdd). This contributes too much of Xbox’s weight, but gives many features. With this you don’t have a need for a memory card to save your game files, you save them right to the hard-drive. This is a very nice feature on the Xbox, because it saves you money.
As advance technology of fiber-optic developed and is on the rise, everyday there is another story about entertaining movies on demand and streaming online is with ease. Those developments which let movie’s viewers sit in the comfort of their home or anywhere with access to the internet can stream instance movies with a push of a bottom. They no longer need to make a trip to the movie’s stores for movies rental and return, so that is why movie shops fail and filed for bankruptcy bring a symbolic close to the “let’s go rent a movie” era. Blockbuster LLC, formerly Blockbuster Entertainment Inc., both owned and franchised American-based giant provider of home movie and video game rental services through video rental stores, later adding movies by mail, streaming online and video on demand. Due to the peak of fiber-optic and competition from companies such as Netflix, Redbox, and GameFly, Blockbuster became the victim of digital media and filed for bankruptcy on September 23, 2010 due to significant lost in revenue.[3]
A Blu-ray disk is the exact same size as a DVD. When holding the two disks side by side, it would be impossible to differentiate between them. My chosen topic is minimum wages increasing in the United States. This topic came from the idea from the news. It was brought up in the discussion. This topic was interesting because I work at a retail store in New Jersey. The wages in New Jersey are seven dollars and twenty five cents. In 2014 it will be a dollar up so it is going to be tough because prices will rise. This topic affects me because now I worked as a minimum wage worker so I get pay by an hour. If the wages rise then something will decrease and increase.
Figure 2 present an image of a DVD and a BD. As can be seen on the DVD, the pits and bumps are larger and so the laser is less accurate than that of the BD. Blu-Ray disc can run formats that are encoded in MPEG-4 and MPEG-2. BD is also used for data storage, playing 1080p HD video and audio, 3-D Stereophonic and it has many other uses.
DVD sales have declined causing a current problem for Sony Corporations subsidiary Sony Pictures Entertainment. Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. has seen a severe decline in revenue in the past recent months. DVD sales have declined to a level of severe concern, and as such left financial analysts and specialists in the industry deeply worried. We have taken to the field and conducted a number of interviews to decipher the basis of the rationale behind lack of DVD sales. Through the course of the following entailed research and our detailed interview analysis’s, we hypothesis that the drop in sales is due to a number of interrelated reasons including the current economic state and an advance in technologies giving consumers many alternative options to the DVD.
At home, you can control the variety and ways to watch a movie. People buy many movies to watch at home and it can be anything at any time, even at any place. The only bad thing about it is that they cannot see any of the newest released movies that recently came out in theaters. There are two types of ways people watch movies in their homes. One way is people who already own DVDs or have bought many of them and start watching them in their DVD players.
Now for computers in the schools, I feel we will soon have no books and all work will be done on computers. Even homework will be done on the internet and e-mailed to the teacher. Children will be taught about computers at a younger and younger age. This in turn will make the younger generations more and more skilled in electronics and understanding how they work. This will have a very large impact on they way projects and or work is viewed.
