Texting While Driving

People who drive distracted cause 8,000 crashes everyday in the United States amounting to 240,000 accidents in a month in the United States alone (The Huffington Post). This alarming number of accidents could either be deadly, severe, or a fender bender. Involvement in any accident could be costly, and they add points to licenses making insurance costs rise. Having all these factors come into play should make people think twice about texting and driving, but sadly people do not. People do not think before they act, which is why about twenty-six percent of Americans have admitted to texting while driving (Do Something). This deadly habit needs to stop; it distracts drivers and others, it’s extremely dangerous, and it is illegal in thirty-nine states. The ability to text has only been around since 1985, but it has already become many people’s preferred choice of communication (When Center). Since then, the number of people who use a hand held device behind the wheel dramatically increased. This is a major problem that is not stressed enough through media, yet it causes millions of accidents in the United States and other developed countries throughout the world every year. This epidemic is only starting to be worked on and the reactions of people around the world have not reached the standards that they must reach in order for laws to start being enforced. Stressing the importance of this deadly habit to teenagers around the world is not in full effect. Many teenagers are picking up the habit and are not refraining from using up their cellular device while driving.
