”Books will soon be obsolete in the schools...Scholars will soon be instructed through the eye. It is possible to touch every branch of human knowledge with the motion picture” (Thomas Edison). An idea that was destined for failure has now been made into the key source to get students and teachers more interacted while in a classroom setting. Tablets such as the iPad and the Microsoft surface have made this idea possible, showing students that there is another alternative to the traditional method which would be a printed version of the textbook. Tablets are portable computers that use a touchscreen as its primary input device, meaning that both keyboard and mouse are both physically located on the screen. Early Tablets were built to be used with a pen, today however tablets can be used with just one finger or multiple fingers with the support of multi touch input. Tablet have had a positive input on society especially students in school that are looking to get their work done in an engaging way and, not by moving a pen or pencil like it’s been done for decades. Tablets have proven to be the better tool for learning among students.
Tablets can help improve the way students attain their studies. According to Cam Lincoln “Students who used the iPad version of the textbook scored 20 percent higher on standardized test versus students who learned with traditional textbook”(parag.2).This demonstrates that, students who used the iPad version of the textbook learned more effectively than the students who learned with traditional textbooks. Money is an important part of everyday life. If there is any way that money could be saved then that is more than likely the choice. Today’s world is constantly evolving and technological advances are surfacing it seems like every few weeks. Apple has produced the country’s most popular devices and the question has arose whether or not iPads are effective in the classroom. This research project will thoroughly entail the pros of implementing an iPad in the learning environment. As for my personal take on the debate, I side with modernizing education in order to keep up with technology and to preserve the student’s enjoyable learning environment.

(Ray, 2011) Nowadays, 40% of Americans read online or e-books, rather than reading out of printed books. In July 2010, Amazon had announced that during that year e-books had sold more than printed books. (Digital Book World, 2012) Tablets and textbooks share a few similarities, yet they differ in other aspects.
In today’s technology marketplace, PDAs are obsolete. However, one device that has replaced the PDA is the tablet computer. The tablet computer is a powerful learning tool. Students may use tablets to manage their schoolwork, communicate, conduct research, take notes, create multi-media projects, and practice skills. They are highly portable and apps available for every learning need. A computer tablet is defined as, “A general-purpose computer contained in a single panel. Its distinguishing characteristic is the use of a touch screen as the input device.” (Encyclopedia, n.d.)
Smart phones, smart devices, and tablets have truly changed the way, in which someone can learn. When someone has these new tools, learning can be made much easier. Researching for a paper can be made so much easier, when technology is available, due to potential access of the Internet. There are so many new techniques, which we can learn from, and use them to teach many future generations to come. Do you ever think about how much technology has changed the way we work, learn, play, and even think? Technology is a major beneficiary to society; especially in the classroom where we get the opportunity to learn and grow. In recent years, schools have begun implementing tablets and other devices in the classroom to better student’s education. The use of technology in the classroom provides more of a personalized learning experience and gives students a widespread availability to engage in learning. Technology is necessary in today’s modern globe, it is basically “the pen and paper of our time and the lens through which we experience much of our world” (Warlick, 2013). Technology is not just considered the “internet”, it is so much greater than that. Overall, it enhances the quality of education and engages students deeper than ever before. With all the significant gains, why would people argue that technology hinders students more than it helps? Critics may try to repute the use of technology in the classroom but I believe what really matters “is the way we use it, the context that we use it in, and the learners who we use it for” (Chong, 2012).

A couple of years ago education institutions were questioning whether or not computers could be a tool for learning and whether they should embrace it or not into their schools. Nowadays the use of computers has proven to be a great tool for educating students but with the new touch screen technology coming out many institutions does not know which technology is better to be used in their schools: computers or tablets (Piggott, 2011). These new devices are less expensive and more portable, yet some critics contend they’re not useful and are best for entertainment, not learning or work (Wylie, 2013). Touch screen devices are much cheaper and affordable and since educational institutions are always dealing with funding issues they might fall as a default into picking touch screen technology versus computers for their schools (Smith, 2013). The main question becomes is this a good choice?
The twenty-first century has arrived, and it has brought some of the most advanced computing technologies into the classroom; this leaves us with a very important question, do we really need technology, such as iPads or computers, implemented in our learning plans? As a student that has taken entire courses on iPads or computers, I can tell you that the former is not the case. There are plenty of reasons to teach about technological advances in each individual field of learning, but, more often than not, technology is unreliable and distracting for students. Not to mention that methods of maintenance rehearsal, like taking notes by hand, are more effective for recollection of information than staring into a screen. The bottom line is, using technology as a tool for education in the classroom is not necessary because it can inhibit the way students learn material.
