With technology progressing from drones fulfilling shipments to electronic books becoming cheaper, major companies such as Apple and Amazon have had a big impact on not only the tech industry but the publishing industry as well. Companies are outputting resources like IBook’s and the Kindle bookstore to take full advantage of the transition to digital publishing. As a result of this we have greener, more budget friendly books, and outdated traditional copies of text. With the introduction to these resources it is making the lives of students and the mass market more convenient. Students are now able to purchase books on one device that won’t weigh their bags down on a daily basis. Companies have created bookstores that can be accessed from devices that we use every day, resulting in paperless copies of books that are substantially cheaper than the traditional hard copy. E-books are replacing physical books and textbooks rapidly, and as a result they are becoming more widely and readily available for students. The advantages of E-books are clear. They provide the reader with a cost effective way to purchase and read books. In addition to that I found an article from WSJ by Steve Johnson that stated “E-books would likely change the way we read, write and sell books in profound ways” (Johnson). This statement is entirely accurate, because we are currently living through the transition to the digital form of publishing. Besides being cost effective E-books have many other advantages compared to traditional books. E-books have made a big impact in the lives of students. E-books being cheaper than traditional books is the single biggest reason for students to take advantage of them. This source considers the issue of converting to digital books, specifically as it pertains to the effect that this change would have on the global environment. Although the research does recognize that there are disadvantages to not having a physical copy of a book and to abandoning certain platforms that do not transfer well to a digital form, overall, these researchers conclude that publishers should move towards digital products not only for the sake of cheaper long-run costs, but also for the good that going paperless can do for the environment. By displaying a series of graphs, as well as including multiple data sets, the text explains how e-books compare with printed texts; then, analysis of these facts is also included to show the reader the authors’ point.
In addition, textbooks are heavy to carry around and it takes longer to find a page. Likewise with digital textbooks they are compatible with tablets, smartphones, and laptops; it’s much easier to carry around and affordable price. However, some people may argue that digital textbooks can be a distraction for people because they would not bother read anymore. The author and poet Dana Gioia argues that electronics alternatives may be a bad influence that will lead society to not read anymore. Gioia complicates matters further when she writes, “While no single activity is responsible for the decline in reading, the cumulative presence and availability of electronic alternatives increasingly have drawn Americans away from reading” (161). I think Gioia is mistaken because she overlooks on electronics being a bad influence; but doesn’t see the benefits of electronics. To demonstrate, most of my textbooks are digital, which I can easily carry my tablet around where ever I go. Also, I save more money on digital textbooks and are simple to annotated the text. Journalist Ellen Lee interview a student from Liberty University, and he states that he prefers digital textbooks because he can tap his iPad, opens the digital copy and quickly open the page. Nevertheless, he also like digital textbooks because it has a feature that allows to highlight and mark the
The history of the e-book spans a longer period than many people would realise. Most people would assume that the internet came before the e-book. However, this is not the case. The first ever e-book was the U.S. Declaration of Independence. It was typed up by the founder of Project Gutenberg, Michael S Hart, in 1971 whereas the internet was not created until 1974. Even then, it was not the internet we know today. In order to chronicle a history of e-books up to the present day the following issues must be addressed. What were the initial forms of e-books like; what kind of formats are used in electronic publishing; what sorts of devices are used to read electronically; what is digital rights management, and how does it apply to the e-book; and what impact has the e-book had on the way books are price and on publishing business models.
The U.S book industry can be divided into two eras; the time before and after the online bookstores. This case is one of the classic battles between a pure online bookstore and a traditional brick and mortar retailer trying to leverage its resources and capabilities online. Amazon, once an online book store, now has expanded its business into different products and service offerings and markets and captured a significant market share. On the other hand Barnes & Noble, which had tried hard through the 1990s to consolidate the traditional bookselling space with its superstore format, stood miles behind Amazon.
...ed in providing the latest titles of books Amazon has been following a unique strategy to offer a fully customized manner by launching its book searching tools and email announcements to its customers. Amazon is also confident to give satisfaction to its partner book retailers such as Barnes & nobles, Borders, and Google by complying with all legal formalities such as book conversion standards and media distribution criterion for preventing book piracy and substandard reading material. But, there is an imperative need to follow some effective ways of advertisement and consistent pricing strategy to confront its competitors. Despite all these, Amazon Kindle is suffering from some weaknesses but still it has been revolutionizing the book businesses and the reading patterns of its customers by preventing the book piracy in order to supply qualitative reading material.
Through the growth in technology acceptance and capabilities, digital media like e-books are prone to provide new ways for readers
When discussing the effects of e-books on reading comprehension, it is important to define both e-books and reading comprehension. E-books are defined as any digitized book that is accessible through a variety of electronic devices such as a desktop computer, e-reading device, Smartphone, or tablet (“E-books,” 2012). E-books can be used to access a variety of both free and paid reading materials made available through the internet. While they may not provide the same feeling of reading a printed book, many e-books contain features that allow readers to highlight, underline, and add notes to the text (“E-books,” 2012).

E books in recent years have exploded in popularity and they are leaving an impact on many areas of our daily lives. This may seem like a good idea saving space, and being easier to purchase, however eBooks have had created complications integrating into libraries and bookstores. Are eBooks redefining how libraries are ran? To find an answer to this question we have to look at what complications bookstores and libraries have tackled in regards to eBooks and how each have been handled within these establishments.
Paper books are ubiquitous, and there’s have a good reason for this: they have existed for centuries. Until the very concept of eReaders existed, there was no other option for modern reading material. Everyone knows what a paper book is. Additionally, many know how paper books are suffering because of the introduction of eReaders:. “Meanwhile, printed books declined 34 percent and 16 percent in those respective areas, with gentler, single-digit drops for education and religious titles.” (Engadget). It has been observed that every genre of books is suffering with the addition of electronic books to the market. It is a mystery whether or not paper books will be able to stay afloat.
Knowledge Center analyst J. Gerry Purdy predicts that up to 75 percent of the paper- bound book readers of the world could switch to using eBook readers within 10 years if the eBook readers incorporate certain features. Purdy notes that today people do not use eBook readers over regular paper-bound books because they do not provide the person reading the book with a better reading experience. He describes 15 features he believes eBook readers must have in order for most people to want to use one instead of reading a paper-bound book. I will summarize these 15 features and comment on each from a personal perspective.
There are advantages and disadvantages to eReaders. Some of the advantages to eReaders is that they are lightweight. Rather than carrying around dozens of different books, the eReader can download them all, so portability is much easier. EBook users can also look up a certain text or part of a book using their eReader. Another great advantages to them is that they are good for the environment by saving trees.

During the past few years, the publishing and reading world has been facing a veritable digital book onslaught. E-books have been outselling print books on Amazon since 2011 (Polanka, 7). While digital book sales skyrocketed, print book sales, especially those of mass marked paperbacks, diminished. Even the fact that e-books are not much cheaper than print books does not seem to interfere with the former’s popularity. It would seem that the age of print books is about to end, and quite soon.
