Technology in the Mathematics Classroom

While reading the NCTM summary on Technology, it is to my

understanding that use of technology is at the teacher’s discretion.

Therefore, the teacher is charged with the responsibility of preparing

students before venturing into the field of technology. Essentially,

students should be able to grasp and understand basic concepts and

ideas, before intertwining computers or calculators into a lesson to

further explore the concepts in said lesson.

When visiting the U.S. Department of Education’s National

Education Technology Plan website, I did not find any information on

how technology should or could be integrated with mathematics. Their

entire site was devoted to integrating technology but simply left an

open forum for ideas. Now the ideas submitted by teachers were

interesting, however, the matter still remains on whether a teacher

feels that their students are prepared and receptive to integrate

technology with a lesson or idea. I believe a teacher would be less
