Everywhere you go, teens seem to be glued to their phones, tablets, or computers. Technology is an addiction that does not seem to be going away any time soon. According to the Washington Post, teens can spend up to seven or more hours on their digital devices a day and the usage is still increasing. Not surprisingly enough, more than a third of all teenagers own a cellphone, ranging from a smart phone or just a plain old-school flip phone. But can spending all that time on their computers and smart devices be such a bad thing? Today’s easy access, always on world presents a wealth of opportunity for teens as students, but also challenges them to retain them essential humanity and unique personalities.
The internet is home to all the known knowledge throughout the world. With an estimated 634 million websites available (Royals) everything simply seems to be found by typing in the desired information in any popular search engines available and an answer will immediately pop up. As stated on Google, on average per day, a billion different items are searched on their search engine alone. With that type of search power, teenagers all over can be opened up to a new range of information that are sparking many controversies of its use in education.
Education boards and schools all over the country are now developing ways in which technology is used for educational purposes. Schools all over are beginning new ways of keeping up with this fast paced world by implementing iPads and SMART boards. As new technologies are placed, teachers are beginning to realize a trend of increased educational performance. This new wave of technology usage in schools gives hope to the American public of improved national education.

Post inception of the cell phone has fueled a shift in the civility of adolescent social interaction. Gone are the days of seeing teenagers imaginatively playing alongside each other with the only restriction being his or her ability to effectively communicate. Virtual conversations, text messages and online social networks have replaced development of social skills through personal interactions. Some educators insist that cell phones provide a unique opportunity to capitalize on the learning experience in the modern classroom. Unfortunately, cell phones also provide an opportunity for adolescents to compromise their ethical values and moral standards. Adolescents are known to be source for cheating on exams, disrupting the classroom, and promoting inappropriate behaviors. Distracting characteristics of cell phone usage have shown a negative effect on the reading/writing ability of the adolescent and their subsequent readiness for higher learning. School administrators are challenged to balance the right of possession of the devices by adolescents and the monitoring /control of the school environment during a crisis. A school administrator named Patrick Gabriel drives a point home when he says “The constant use of cell phones, perhaps symbolic of life made virtual by all technology, seems to compound the problem. It has a powerful pull on so many. From my office window, I see students leaving school early or arriving late texting and calling with practically every step they take. The need to stay connected at every moment trumps all other behavior”(38) . Twenge’s article maintains the argument that, while many people have different ideas about the cause for the change in teen attitudes in recent years, she believes that smartphones are greatly to blame. To support her claim, Twenge states that the rates of depression have “skyrocketed” (p. 61) (Pathos). With improvements in technology, it is no surprise that people everywhere are connected with each other all over the world. The newest technologies of today are only continuing to improve, as they are becoming more widespread every day. Smartphones, which are a broad part of this technological craze, are sweeping the nation into the hands of teenagers today, many preferring to use them instead of socializing with people face to face. These improvements, however, come with consequences. Smartphones are destroying a generation by causing the teenagers today to be more stressed, anxious, and depressed.
Technology plays a very important role in today’s society. Everyone has a smart phone and we crave the latest and greatest televisions, computers, cell phones and tablets. A comedian, Louis C. K., uses an example of airplanes to further explain how much we take for granted.
