While performing a music piece to the audience, what will the audience, who have no experience about instruments, think about the quality of the sound we make? The audience wouldn’t really care; they would think a random sound that come from an instrument is what an instrument can do. However, the truth is, there are lots of techniques we must achieve for a full quality of the sound. One of the technique is called intonation, the accuracy of pitch while playing or singing. It is difficult to reach intonation with many members of players, because each instrument sounds different, they have their own unique sound of one note. Also, not every player knows the trick of reaching intonation with their sections. Though, we can practice and learn how to achieve intonation with various techniques. Clarinet is one of the instruments available in band, which is what I’m playing with. For clarinet players, there are lots of techniques to change and reach intonation. The first technique to reach predominant intonation is you can try to pull in or out the barrel, which is the second first piece of the clarinet. Not only you must play the right note with the right fingerings, remember to check and be cautious about whether you cover the hole with your finger completely. This really matters because the sound of the note you play will be out of tune. Nevertheless, your clarinet must have no broken rings and keys. It has to be in the condition like a brand new clarinet. For instance, air will slip through from the hole that wasn’t completely covered by the keys, and the pitch will not be in tone.
