Teaching Teachers to Teach Physical Education

Having performed the role of physical education teacher for a great part of one’s life and having taught PE in the secondary school system for more than seventeen years, the researcher has been exposed to children entering the secondary system in Form One unable to go through basic movement experiences required at this level.

The researcher has spent more than six months in a new role as principal at the school St Thomas (Mayaro) RC School where the researcher now work. The age range of pupils at this institution is between five years and thirteen years with pupils who have come from diverse racial backgrounds. As instructional leader one has to observe teachers as they teach their lessons and examine their official books. I have noticed over the past months, that teachers have been negligent in imparting the Physical Education syllabus to the children under their care. I have been informed by all on staff that they are unsure about what has to be done for Physical Education lessons. In effect what they are really indicating is that they are not endowed with the knowledge and the skills required in delivering the prescribed syllabus to their charges.

Pupils are therefore relegated to having all their physical activity centred on the break and lunch time period. During this time pupils are involved in free play and games they would have learnt from their friends or relatives. The teacher guided Physical Education class is non existent throughout the school. Because pupils are not given the opportunity to express their innate physical talents in a formal setting, on the recreation field, they leave the classrooms at lunchtime with great noise and excitement which indicates to me that they are happy to release that impulsive natu...

3. Seek written permission from teachers/participants to film them in action, if they wish to attempt teaching a lesson or what they are accustomed doing for PE

4. Formulate and issue a questionnaire to each teacher/participant

5. Collect the questionnaires two weeks later from each teacher

6. Analyse the data collected from the questionnaires

7. Present data collected in table/numerical and graphical formats

8. Based on the findings, seek permission from the MOE to have a Professional Development workshop done with teachers with special reference to the teaching of Physical Education.

9. As instructional leader, do follow up visits to classrooms to observe PE lessons being done and offer advice where appropriate( ie: implications and application of what was imparted to pupils)
