Everyone knows that parents’ first worry is the safety of their children. With the increase of violence in schools, parents have started to wonder if their children are really safe in the school setting. Shootings like Sandy Hook and Columbine left parents, administrators, and educators feeling the need to be proactive towards children’s safety. Reacting to situations like these is not good enough when children’s lives are on the line. Administration has started to brainstorm different ways to help insure the protection of their students. The idea of having teachers carry concealed weapons has been on the front burner for quite some time. As a result of this extreme idea, insurance companies have started to increase or even cancel policies with schools that have armed teachers because of the high risk they are putting themselves at. Parents and administrators also worry about the idea of children getting their hands on one of the teachers’ weapons and injuring themselves or other students. Because this idea seems quite extreme, I believe there are other alternatives that are less dramatic and more positively out looked, such as having armed security guards in schools.
On December 12, 2012, Sandy Hook Elementary School was invaded by an unstable, armed man. Earlier that year the principal of the school, Dawn Hochsprung, implemented a new security system that required all visitors to buzzed into the school by visual identification. Many schools have also put in similar security systems to have school doors locked at all times during the school day, helping insure students’ safety. One of the biggest debates in education is how to respond to gun violence in schools. According to BBC, “There were 64 school shootings in 2015” (BBC). One response to the rise in gun violence in schools is to arm teachers. Even our President has mentioned “giving a bonus” (Davis 2) to teachers that The fact that the idea of arming teachers is even being discussed is disappointing. Bringing more guns into a school is not the answer to gun violence. Most people that defend the idea that guns will “help” keep schools safe have basically three points: (1) teachers will be trained in gun safety, (2) it helps deter potential school shooters, and (3) it will make the students feel more safe. Even though there is some truth to those points, I think that the cons of arming teachers vastly outweigh the pros of arming teachers.

It is a sad time in American history when one can easily recount recent school shootings in their own area. This ease stems from a sharp increase in the number of firearms brought into elementary and middle schools across the country, with an intense focus on the issue beginning after the shooting of 20 children from Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut. Most school shooters are male, white, and often upper middle class. They are also more, often than not, under some type of mental stress that is causing them to create this type of violence in our communities. In fact, many school shooters are never suspected of doing any harm to their peers and teachers until it is much too late.

There's a problem in America. Children, defenseless are being shot one by one. They go to their school and the schools are a gun free zone. The shooters take advantage of it and take the children's lives. Teachers should be able to carry a handgun to protect their children. This is very important, to all teachers and students for their safety. Shooters wouldn't come in the school knowing that the teacher had a gun. Students would feel way safer. There would be a lot of safety that would go into this.there are a lot of facts that can help us make the decision.
Now more than ever the increase of in school massacres are starting to become more evident. The Sandy Hook and Oregon shootings are sending people searching for a way to keep their children safe when they are away from home receiving an education. This poses an issue, some people see it is fit for teachers to be armed with a gun in case of future attacks on the school. The outcome that will follow from arming teachers will be negative, but there is a solution that involves the protection of students without handing guns over to teachers.

School shootings can have countless causes, from a child getting bullied to the mentally disturbed. However, there are ways to avoid them. Some say teachers should be armed and others say gun control laws should be strengthened. There is a multitude of ideas that need to be considered before such influential decisions are made.
Arming teachers in selected states will continue to provide the necessary protection students need. Some teachers have already been armed with the help of the Law Enforcement. Some schools, especially with bigger campuses need the protection because they do have a lot more students than most other states. In the state of Florida, there has been more than a few school shootings. Tess Owen, writer for VICE News, states that “Rick Scott the principal signed a bill stating that their school is allowing school staff to train with the law enforcement to carry guns on school grounds”. Teachers with concealed gun permits should be allowed to carry guns on campus because teachers have had very thorough background checks, they have come into the teaching profession because they care about kids, and to gain a concealed weapons permit extensive training is required.
I believe that teachers should have a choice, on whether they want to be trained and carry a gun on campus. I wouldn’t think that teachers such as Mrs. Gloria, or Ms. Dimplais would want to train for such thing. The teachers should have a choice if they want to do it or not. If they do, they have a better chance on coming home to their children/pets.
Should teachers have the right to hold firearms in schools? This has been a very controversial topic that people in America have been debating over since the massacre of Columbine High School. Many people believe that giving teachers guns will help prevent school shootings because they can take action and save student lives. Others believe that giving guns to teachers is unsafe and can cause accidents to happen where they make wrong judgement or they misplace their guns and it falls into the wrong hands. Teachers should not have the right to carry firearms because there are too many risk factors that can take place.
The issue of whether or not teachers should be allowed to carry concealed weapons on school campus has been a national debate for years now. Will weapons prevent mass shootings in schools? Shootings like Sandy Hook, Columbine, and Stoneman Douglas have left parents, administrators, and educators feeling like they should be more involved in finding solutions for their children’s safety. With children’s lives on the line, the
government has not capitalized on the lessons learned. Discussions about implementing stricter gun laws, scrutinizing applicant background checks, and even talks of banning assault weapons continue to be the topic of White House round-table discussions and in search for the solution. These are viable solutions although would require time and sufficient manpower strategy to conform within our legislative system . Safety experts states, “Even though most school crisis plans generally address school violence generated by students, more attention needs to be paid to the threat of outside intruders, because little can be done to stop a determined shooter once he or she has gained access to a school building. ” Historical data from previous school shootings in the U.S. share the commonalities where gunmen select the path of least resistance, as well as knowing the provided protection to counter the attack is limited or nonexistent.
