As our city schools struggle to improve, it is critical that our school leaders be, innovative, supportive, open minded, strong, and passionate. These same school leaders must also have extensive experience as educators, and be committed to studying and incorporating current research into their practices. I have experience in leadership roles in the school setting, and I have learned a great deal from my participation in these roles. I am committed to the students of New York City; I want to improve our schools for them. It would be an honor to be a school leader working towards bringing excellence to all of our public schools. I am pursuing post-graduate studies to gain the knowledge and experience that will make me an effective school leader in New York City.
This year I took on challenging leadership responsibilities at my school. In the fall I took over as the Testing Coordinator. I volunteered to serve in this role because I was troubled by how it had been handled in the past. The student experience during testing windows was always very chaotic and confused, especially for students with disabilities. The previous testing coordinator always neglected to plan for students with testing accommodations; as a special education teacher, this was very troubling to me. My first big jobs as testing coordinator were the PSAT and the January Regents. Both went smoothly, all of the students and all of the adults knew where to be and what was expected of them. I was careful in making sure all of the testing accommodations that students were eligible for were met. I have worked hard on this project and have loved every moment of it. This experience in instructional leadership has made it obvious to me that I this is the kind of work I want to keep doing.
There is no greater privilege than the opportunity to help a young person gain the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in the world. Schools that bring all of their students succeed are always led by outstanding administrators. I want to a lead a school to meet all of its students where they are, and carry them to their maximum potential. I will use my post-graduate education to acquire the skills and experience I will need to lead a school that helps ensures every student reaches his or her potential.

The major concepts of this article relate to the ineffectiveness of school leadership programs. Arthur Levine found that a majority of the programs were inadequate. He noted four areas in which these programs lacked efficiency. These areas of concern were the rise in off-campus low quality programs, weak research-intensive universities that are working towards awarding doctoral degrees in administration, competition for students is causing lowered program quality and admission criteria, and the fact that state and local school districts are adding to the problem by salary incentives for advanced degrees. Levine noted several major issues that affect school administration programs. First, he revealed that many people who had finished these programs agreed that the curriculum was irrelevant; they said that it did prepare them to deal with "on-the-job issues." Second, the issues of low admission and graduation standards were addressed. The study illustrated how many schools lower their standards to increase admission and create tuition "cash cows." Third, he discussed the issue of these schools having weak faculties.

Throughout everyday tasks in the classroom, or outside of school, I step up and lead those who need to be led. I constantly find new opportunities to lead others and help the situation any way I can. Every summer the band has a marching band camp for a week straight that we must all attend. Being an experienced band member, I step up and assist all underclassmen and show then where to go and what they need to be doing. Instead of getting frustrated when giving the freshman directions, I am calm and collect and walk them step by step until they understand, something most leaders would not have time or patience for. With many plans to help others and lead within my community, I believe that I have what it takes to be a strong, and powerful leader for the National Honor Society.
As a leader candidate, I can understand the challenges and multiplicity of complications that administrators must face each day. However, I will not accept any remote possibility that the students must be affected by some flaws of the school organization. We all as leaders, must be strategic with people, time, and money to guide our students towards an academic success.
In conclusion I feel that I have gained knowledge that can only be obtained through hands on experience in the classroom. With this experience I changed my assumption about classroom management techniques and have a totally new outlook which will only aid me as a teacher. This will be of great help to me going forward but I feel as a teacher you must be constantly open to learning and improving
I have been a classroom teacher with the same school division (and its legacy divisions) for twenty two years. I have therefore, been an active participant and witness to the multitude of changes and growth that have enveloped the realm of education and my school division. My role in the classroom has mainly included English and Arts instruction at the grade 11 and 12 levels. I have considered it an honor to be one of the last teachers involved in a student’s K-12 education and have deeply recognized this important leadership role, guiding our students by way of instruction and by example, through their final educational stretch and empowering them to be leaders themselves. I feel that I have helped to create a society of learners where students are being constantly challenged, where they experienced meaningful personal and educational growth and were empowered to celebrate their accomplishments whether they were big or small.
The role of a principal is a vital function of the school. The manner in which a principal performs determines that success of the school. Being in the position as an assistant principal has allowed me to view this role totally different from I did when I was a teacher. I am grateful to intern, full time trusting that I will gain the most out of this experience. However, there are a number of lessons that I have learned within these first quarter of my internship that will vastly impact my leadership as a new leader.
There has definitely been a lot of stressors that have shaped me into a better professional and educator. I have overcame being displaced in a temporary room with little to know supplies for 3 months, being interim Head Teacher for 1.5 months while still performing all my Teacher Assistant duties, training and working with 2 new staff as well as personal issues going on as well. I have overcome everything. I believe now that I can tackle whatever life throws at me. This quarter, I believe that I became a better educator by increasing my abilities to individualize learning and development, being more focused on how children learn instead of what they learn, and learning techniques and practices I can put into effect next year as an educator. I definitely feel like a better educator after learning from this program. I have the ability to be patient when children are having negative behaviors. I have grown into a professional improvising in situations, and I definitely have a lot of knowledge about how children learn. The best part of my experience has been working with other professionals that I now call colleagues. I realize that networking with other agencies is the best way to accomplish goals for children. I have learned so much from working with people outside of Head Start and my other practicums. I have full confidence in my abilities to teach and educate children, as well as administrate. In developing my own educational leadership model (MELM) I began with establishing what I believe the goal of education should be, since leaders by definition are leading people towards something. The goal of education is to effectively teach students the essential skills and knowledge they will need to establish a productive, positive, self-sufficient life where they can be active members of their communities. An effective leader, while working towards this goal will need to consider the present conditions and demands of the environment they are a part of. In the field of education, both internal and external factors are of crucial importance when developing a plan to lead for success. However, one must note the variables in education are different than those the business sector face, for example; student performance, ability and cultural differences; availability/condition of supplies and materials; goal; educator’s capability, views and attitudes; conditionality of economic support; openness/hostility of influencing communities; state or government performance mandates. A leader who knows where they (students, school, district, community) are now, can approach goals more clearly and develop more effective strategies to arrive at them.
Teachers and leaders work and communicate together to initiate changes that’s needed to build new ways of learning, sharing and accessing knowledge, then putting it to work in the lives of all students. At my school we have learned education, science, technology and hardworking devoted staff members are the key to preparing our students for a great global education and future.
Individuals who enter the field of education reply to the question why teach with various answers. There is beauty, joy, and fulfillment in this profession, and these spirit-lifting emotions are the result of watching annually as a new group of children enter to learn and leave with the knowledge to achieve. Richard Dufour (2000), author of Why Teach expressed his views on the profession first by stating that teaching is not the career for everyone. He goes on to say, that the education profession has the ability to present the “unique opportunity” for individuals to cast a positive influence upon others (Why Teach, 2000, p.1). The smiles received from a room full of students when as a whole their individual needs, both educational and personal have been catered to, prompts a burst of passion in every teacher.
